but where's the skeletal features and exposed brain?
That's it though, this is the first time we've seen this creature with skin and muscles. Every time the Icon's appeared in other games, it's just a skull. I'm betting that we're gonna see his classic appearance with the skeleton and the exposed brain late in the game when the Slayer does some damage to him. Given that every other returning demon in the game pays homage to their classic appearance, it's not a stretch to think that the Icon will eventually turn into what we're familiar with.

Also, we already saw the NuDoomiverse's Icon's corpse(?) in the Titan's Realm, so has he been resurrected or something?
That was the Titan, and as far as I know it's a different beast entirely. The Titan rose to stop the Slayer from destroying more of Hell only to die by his hands. The Icon of Sin on the other hand was the Betrayer's resurrected son that was twisted into an incredibly powerful demon. The Titan's also got a different head and horns from the Icon.

Who the heck are the Betrayer, his son, and the Icon, exactly? This all sounds metal as fuck and I am ashamed I do not know what you're talking about.

Wow, this I think is the first in a long time that Bethesda let the reviews come in before the game released.

I already was confident that this game was the real deal, feels like it's gonna be the GOTY for sure now. And for the record I loved Doom 2016 but I did think at times the maps were too linear.

Doom 2016 talked about all this in codex entries you receive in the last level of the game. Basically, the Betrayer was a member of the Night Sentinels, and his son had fallen in battle. A hell priest named Deag Grav promised him that the demons could resurrect his son if he led them to the Wraiths, who were the guardian deities of Argent D'nur, home of the Sentinels. The demons cursed the Wraiths, which destroyed Argent D'nur. They also resurrected the Betrayer's son as the Icon of Sin, meaning they technically kept their promise of bringing him back to life albeit in a monkey's paw sort of way.

You don't see any of this happen, and early looks at the game indicate you meet the Betrayer himself so Eternal's probably gonna flesh all this out which should be interesting.

Finally got to play Doom II for the firs time using the GZDoom source port.

Using a keyboard for controls since my laptop doesn't have a traditional mouse. It takes some getting used to, but I like it so far.

Paging @BrunoMattei for some mod recommendations for Doom II. Been thinking about trying out Brutal Doom or some of the TC's.

I don't really like the way the angel guy looks. He reminds me of an alien from a Bioware game.

Out of sheer curiosity, how far are you and what difficulty are you playing on? Because I remember I got as far as Barrels O' Fun on Hurt Me Plenty and looking back I have no idea how I made it that far on keyboard.

There's Project Brutality which is like BD but more insane. I mentioned this before but I really enjoyed this too:

Helps if you're a fan of Splatterhouse.

This one's good too even if it's short:

Beat the first level on "I'm Too Young To Die", since this is the first time I've actually played a Doom game in over fifteen years and I mainly just wanted to figure out the basic controls so I started off easy. Last time I played Doom, it was on Windows XP with that Doom trilogy compilation.

I also just now downloaded the Zombies TC: Extreme Epidemic Edition mod off of Mod DB, but I have not installed it yet.

I had no idea until now that an updated version of that existed. That mod was a big deal back in the day when it came out in 95 or 96. Believe it or not, there was a time where there weren't shitloads of FPS zombie games. Or any horror games. And that was not only an FPS zombie game (okay it was a mod but close enough) but one based on the Romero Dead trilogy. That was a big deal within the horror community.

Ah, alright. I've never played on that difficulty but if you're playing keyboard it might be for the best since some of the later levels get really hard on keyboard if you're playing on HMP and UV. I don't even know how you're supposed to fight revenants on a keyboard.

I've been having technical difficulties trying to run Bloom on my PC. The framerate's super stuttery and if I try to play any of the Doom campaigns like TNT or 2, it crashes within like a minute. I tried changing the compatibility and Bloom options but it still runs like dogshit and I have no idea why considering my rig should be way more than enough to run a Doom mod.

Okay, so since Doom Eternal is coming REAL soon, and I've started a run of Doom 2016 in preparation, I decided to share some childhood interpretations of Doom 1 and 2's events, monsters and stuff. Just those imaginative little things that made the game more memorable when looking back.

-I thought the Imps were the result of prolonged demonic possession; so when a former human lived for long enough he started to mutate into an Imp. Sure made them more scary in my mind.
-I believed the teleporters were actually made by people brainwashed into making them, cuz 6 year old me couldn't rationalize people making stuff that could potentially go bad.
-I thought the two barons in episode 1 were actually twin Satan's. I had no fucking clue what was in store for me in episodes 2 and 3.
-When I first fought the Spider Mastermind, I actually had nightmares of being chased by it in a dark forest. In the end I would always get eaten alive by the damn thing after he shot out my legs (Fucked, I know)
-When Doom 2 came out, I actually was afraid of the Revenant because of how he moved and his screams. Nowadays I'm always happy to see him in whatever form he is in, but back then the boner boi spooked the fuck out of me.
-I actually screamed when I saw the Icon of Sin. I legit thought the Devil was gonna try and kill me for killing him in my sleep because I beat him.
-I thought Doom Guy was an angel in disguise, since I never heard of humans fighting off demons before without supernatural help. Nowadays of course I know all you need is some buckshot and a double barrel.
-I thought the BFG fired gamma radiation because of the green hue and having read some Hulk comics earlier.
-The Archvile spooked me plenty; I had nightmares about him killing my parents and setting me on fire forever for days. Now whenever I see him I IMMEDIATELY gun after his ass. That's for countless nights of terror, you skinny fuck.

If you guys have any "Doom memories", add onto the pile. I'm interested in what you guys imagined or rationalized about the game when you were younger.

Heh, when I was playing Doom 2016 for the first time and it became obvious the Doom Slayer was an immortal demon-killing being instead of a mere human like previous games, I developed a crackpot theory that the Slayer was actually Jesus fighting the armies of hell Himself.

I wasn't serious about it, but it certainly would have made the game more hilariously awesome. Of course it would have also been way off-kilter with the rest of the series so it's probably best that they're firmly establishing the Slayer's human in Eternal.

Once more, I am paging @BrunoMattei and any other Kiwis with experience in this.

I've got plenty of Doom memories myself, mostly from the PS1 ports of Doom and Final Doom and from the Doom collection for Windows XP that had The Ultimate Doom, Doom II, and both episodes of Final Doom.

1. The Icon of Sin scared the fuck out of me as a kid, even more than the Cyberdemon since it was a puzzle boss and couldn't be killed in a normal way.

2. I also had a theory as a kid that the Doomguy was either an angel in disguise or was a human who was blessed by God to fight the forces of Hell, with Doom II's chaotic Earth levels taking place during the end times described in the Book of Revelation. Relating to the first memory, when I was a kid, I thought the Icon of Sin was like a hellish advanced mecha piloted by the Antichrist and the "exposed brain" was merely the Antichrist hiding in the cockpit. This was years before I found out about the Easter Egg with John Romero's head. Weird, I know.

3. I also had a theory that Imps were a further mutation of zombies, and that the shotgun and chaingun zombies who mutated into Imps could further mutate into either Revenants or Arch-Viles on a long enough timeline.

4. When I first discovered the Wolfenstein bonus levels in Doom II, I was around eleven or twelve years old and playing on the Windows XP Doom compilation. I knew about Wolfenstein 3D and its place in the history of Doom, but I came up with my own little headcanon of how the Doomguy traveled back in time to World War II to stop the Waffen SS from making a deal with the forces of Hell.

5. Related to the previous one, I was kind of shocked when I saw the Commander Keen sprites hanging from nooses in the second of the Wolfenstein-themed bonus levels for the first time, but I figured it was a reference to the SS occult experiments. I figured the Commander Keen sprites were a bunch of civilians held prisoner and tortured by the SS as part of some fucked-up demonic sacrifice ritual and Doomguy was giving them a mercy kill to both prevent the ritual and ensure their souls could enter Heaven.

Keep in mind that I was an edgy tween and I did not know anything about Commander Keen at the time and I didn't get that it was yet another Easter Egg.

I highly recommend you install ZDL, specifically version 3.2.2.2. This will allow you to easily load up mods, source ports, and individual games without having to fiddle with the folders and shit. It's how I play Doom and it's the most convenient way to tinker with mods since you don't even need everything in one folder. As long as ZDL can read the pathways to the mod, source port, and game, it will work.

Doom 2 + Russian Overkill is pretty much hilarious. Cyberdemon: ROOOOOOOOAR. You, with T-34 Tank Gun: BACHKA! <bombombombombombom> NEXT!
