Even more depressing is how certain circles imploded when Scorsese likened comic book movies to theme parks. So many super intelligent people claiming that they learned more about the human condition watching Guardians of the Galaxy than they did Raging Bull or Goodfellas. Of course, that’s assuming they’ve even watched a Scorsese film. These people are scared to death of nuance and ambiguity.
They can't stand it when you have actually characters who aren't completely evil or good. They just like the good guys vs bad guys. No morally grey characters please.
Scorsese was being kind, most Marvel movies even fail with that. They look so bland and have dull action at best, not thrilling in the slightest for the most part.

Look no further than Black Panther. And yet it's one of the most praised of the Marvel movies. It's combat consists of cgi cat fights and retarded land battles.
It's the continual attempt to make all characters genderless, featureless blobs so that they don't have to put effort into much in character design, and so they attempt to appeal to everyone. It's the same philosophy behind people of flat shit. Just in 3d.
I've always thought of it as Akira Toriyama or Ghibli homages (with the latter explicitly being an inspiration for Luca). I never even heard of this term until it was used for culture war shit
Yeah, I wish it was like that. At least if it was like this, there would be a little bit of a soul to most Western Animation, more akin to the overworked Japanese salaryman, but a soul nonetheless.
Disney Animation and Pixar are still separate studios.
I'll give Luca a pass for at least looking stylized/different enough from like Pixars last few movies using the generic art style they've been using since like inside out. But yeah that new disney movie looks ugly as fuck lol.
Yeah, I noticed that while it's still Pixar, the character designs had a bit more personality than usual while looking unmistakably Italian, and definitely has a touch of Studio Ghibli inspiration (least for the tone). The designs of the sea monsters, however, weren't all that impressive, so I was super glad they were human for the majority of the movie.
I definitely felt some stop-motion vibes when they first showed it off.
