If the advertising was Sony's idea in this particular instance wasn't the worst idea. One of the reasons for the Kojima/Konami situation was spending more money to make the game then the game would ever bring in as profit, so Sony creating a cushion with product placement while scummy in general also kind of smart in this specific instance. Will gladly shit on it if it becomes the norm, but looking at the decision in the Death Stranding bubble it was an easy was to reduce the risk of a game that would have a ceiling for sales.Game apparently didn't bomb and Sony had so much cross advertising with their other products and music that the game was less to make than doing a big advertising push for the individual artists and products and really offset the costs.
So the reason why Cardi B's music is in the game was because it was free to use by Kojima.
Basically it looks like Kojima is safe to release another game. I'm not really sure how I feel about a large amount of in game advertising being a positive thing tho. I mean it works for the setting but you wouldn't be able to do the same thing with stuff like God of War.
