Someone wrote a really powerful screed about these kinds of people. It's floating around the internet somewhere, I think I saved it down but I can't find where I put it. Anyways! They hate that which they cannot match. Fundamentalists of all sorts seek to destroy something they cannot do because it hurts their sense of self superiority. Mix that with a generation raised on "You can be anything you want to be" and you get assholes in fields where they want to be, but destroy because the work before them is so much better than they can put out.
I know it's all political bullshit, but it's crazy how game studios and other kinds of companies have no issue making sexy babes turn on a dime for their next game or whatever the product is. It's like they skipped "boiling the frog slow". You can do this with just about any game dev or comic or whatever. Look what they last put out or were doing even just 3 years ago and look at what they make now. It's crazy how fast it is. Hence why I wonder if some have to be "punished" by making their next thing ugly as fuck.
I think that in combination with people identifying with characters/themes leads to Mary Sues. They more or less write in a rudder that they control for the iceberg that is the story because they don't like what the story is naturally progressing towards, it needs some course corrections. Sometimes retroactively. They never do it to make the game or piece of fiction better, they do it to correct what they see as mistakes and steer it in another direction. It is often something that they like but had no hand in creating. I think of them as termites, they really like the house you've built and now that you have invited/employed them...

There is a fundamental difference between 90's and now. Now, this is mandatory while back then it was mainly limited to children's stuff and could be safely ignored. Back then, you could write these characters anyway you wanted while now they must be generic safe characters of immense blandness. Back then, you could write with the expectation that the audience isn't stupid, now you must write to an audience that thinks depiction IS endorsement.
