Going the whole Divergent/Equilibrium/The Giver route doesn't really fit what I'm going for. And like I said, the whole "repressive futuristic society where individuality could get you killed" has been beaten to death. Also, I showed the first draft to my friends and family, and they actually like the serial killer angle.

Did you mention to them that all of those characters and scenes are stolen from well-known existing novels? That's kind of important.

I didn't rip off Harris entirely. I wasn't deliberately trying to emulate Harris. The reason Klaus and Lilith exist in the story is to provide both a psychological and existential threat to Eva.

existential as in they belong in someone else's novel?

So you deny that the scene where they first meet Krieger in the original story is stolen (often word-for-word) from Harris? And the slide show bit that was so famous that even South Park used it wasn't stolen either?

For the former, I admit I was watching SOTL a bit too much. For the latter, I had to demonstrate how utterly psychologically damaged Lilith was, by showing slides that contrasted the victims' beautiful appearances in life with their bloodied, "corrected" form.

If you really think about it though, what is "original"? Nothing is original. Look at any story you like, you know where it came from? The Bible, Beowulf, Romance of the Three Kingdoms, The Iliad, and Canterbury Tales.

So Connor uses a couple things for inspiration. Are you going to say that The Bible is derivative too because of it uses a similar arc of redemption and rebirth as Redesigning Eva?

I think not.

Could you not have demonstrated this through a literary device that wasn't a massive cliche?

Does this excuse plagiarism?
