He volunteers about 4 hours day. It's not something he gets paid for. I believe he has been doing this for around 3 years. I think it's supposed to help him to be able to get a paid position.
I know he doesn't get paid for it but he's not volunteering, his mom makes him do it. I think you're right that it's supposed to help him get experience so he can get a paid job, but I also think his parents just need a break. He's a mean spirited doofus who thinks he's smarter than everyone else.
And maybe they thought he'd try to get a paying job at some point but that's never going to happen. Even if by some miracle he put in a job application how well would an interview go? He'd start bitching about being a wage slave and ranting about how he hates blue collar workers half way through the interview. Hopefully, for his sake, he's on disability and his parents have just been putting it into a savings account so he has some money after they die.

He's 31 and has never held any type of salaried employment. That's going to be a big red flag for an employer.

I don’t think he’d get a call back for a job that would ask. He can stock shelves. That’s about it. He can just lie on the application.
The worst thing you can do is lie on an application. If your caught you're canned. Conner's best bet would be to see if his volunteer position can be turned into paid employment (depending on how he's carried himself there). He needs some kind of employment coaching and an agency such as Manpower that has programs catering to people with special needs. But I have to agree with you. He needs an attitude adjustment.

Yeah lying on an application is a terrible idea. But what is he more likely to do: have an adult conversation about his wages or lie? He’ll just be told to leave after he insults his current boss then he’ll have to explain that. The only jobs he’d have any chance at getting are just less likely to reach out about his wage.
And I think he’s already been fired from an employment coaching thing before.

He is right on one point. SC is a cheap state when it comes to pay. It is one of a handful of states that does not have a state minimum wage. But there would be nothing to lie about regarding his wages. He's 31 with no history of paid employment. Even getting something at minimum wage (7.25/hour) is $290 per week gross and that's better than nothing. I don't know if he's been fired previously or not.

that’s true. But Connor is a lazy pretentious moron who won’t work those jobs because they don’t pay enough and they don’t have the same status as being a writer. He doesn’t want to be a “wage slave”. He’ll work the job that pays him nothing that he is forced to do by his mother instead of working a job that will pay him money.

It's a pretty good guess that his mother basically said to Conner: " You live under my roof, you're going to abide by my rules".

The first fact that this idiot can come up with, that’s about himself, is that he passively did something 25+ years ago. Fucking hilarious.

My only guess, and I'm definitely right, is that one of his parents asked if he was looking for a job at all.

And the sad thing is... a lot of those skills are things you pick up when you're a homeowner because it's easier to do yourself than to call in a professional.

Have you fixed a leaky pipe, replaced a faucet cartridge or replaced a shower head? You're a plumber.
Have you rewired a light switch, power outlet or ran some cable to the garden shed to get a light in there? You're an electrician.
Have you repaired a deck, put up a fence or built a flower box? You're a carpenter.

All of these things are skills any ordinary person can pick up. But what this means to me is Connor is a lazy piece of shit who refuses to do anything including cook for himself,

And instead of understanding these are life skills he can use, he treats them like they're taking away from his "career" of being a writer.

EDIT: Formatting.

I think he’s said his only responsibility around the house is making sure toiletries are stocked. He doesn’t cook, clean, or do laundry. His parents do everything for him. He has no idea how hard the world’s gonna hit him when they can’t take care of him anymore.
Also, he got caught plagiarizing a blue sky post.

I think the best writers and creatives in general are very well-rounded people, it's been said many times that you should “write what you know” and when you have lots of interesting experiences and have met interesting people you have a lot of material to work from.

Speaking as an artfag, sometimes you have to step away from the drawing board and touch some grass. Observe people in the store. Get in an argument with a crackhead outside of Walmart. Experience the ups and downs of an actual job. But if bro won't even do laundry he's pretty cooked.

One of Connor's problems is writing what he knows. Which is very very little. His curiosity begins and ends with skimming wikipedia and doing film research on letterboxd. That's why his weird Silence of the Lambs rip off is filled with 80's action movie references. He thinks Bloodsport is a deep artistic film and in turn thinks his terrible novel is a deep artistic book.
He's too dumb to do his own laundry so his geriatric parents have to do everything.

You'd think after all this time he'd have realized it's just not working and he needs a real job.

But the funniest bits was when he'd sign up for that November writing thing and he always started out strong, at least for him, and after a couple days his word count just doesn't go up. He lacks the drive and the follow through to be a true writer.

No. Wait a minute. Want to be a licensed plumber? It's 4 to 5 years to get through a combination of an apprenticeship with a master plumber, classroom instruction, and so many hours of on the job training. Want to be a licensed electrician or carpenter? It takes the same amount of time as with a plumber. Connor doesn't have the discipline to do that much less make it as a professional writer. So what do you do with no job experience?

I will tell you what one guy I know of did. He had autism, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and bipolar disorder. So how do you get a job with this kind of barrier? Him and his family went into business together (Red, White and Brew Coffeehouse). Can't get a job? Go into business and make your own job.

I didn't say anything about being licensed. I'm just talking being able to do simple crap around the house so you don't need to call a plumber or electrician when something happens and that's what I'm betting Connor's family was expecting.

If you're a homeowner it's sometimes cheaper and better to do it yourself than calling in a professional so long as you have a good grasp of what's going on.

As for getting your own job... he's a writer. That's all he aspires to be and that's the only job he's accepting.
