If the comic industry was doing well before the shift, I think they wouldn't have had to look outside the community, but I guess Comicbook fans are partially to blame for the transition. If they just bought more comics to keep the industry afloat. But as was said before by others, the distribution chain needs fixes.
I still think its risky, I recall Shazam getting put under pressure from DC back when Shazam went by Captain Marvel at FC, Even though Shazam was its own character with its own origin story and powers different from Superman.

Nintendo is also very sue happy, not sure about Sega. So Nintendo would put out a C&D.
IMO the American comics industry fucked itself in the 90s by shifting focus from kids to the spectator/collector market and flooding the stores with unsellable crap like foil covers.

Now the current crop of idiots are doing their damnest to destroy that market failing to realize there isn't another safety net like the comic shops in the 2000s to catch them if they crash this time.

I think average folks don’t encounter comic books anymore so there isn’t any force that’s channeling people towards the stores.

I love comic book stores but without something to send people there - they are becoming an anachronism.

At the same time much of the consumer base is aging out of the hobby - the larger publishers seem hell bent on alienating the remnants of their consumers - it makes no sense other than a failure of leadership.
People don't encounter comics anymore because they are full of SJW garbage that no one cares about.
In comics the talent is basically responsible for selling the book unless you get a cush deal from one of the big 2. There are of course guys like Waid who hate their customers so much they will never stop. If you're not an SJW they do not want you as a customer it makes no sense. Why would any major company responsible to shareholders put much stake in a branch of the company that hires guys like that to crap on the dwindling customer base daily?

It sounds like you want to Make Comics Great Again.

Japanese Manga does well in the states despite it not being Superhero related and this is not including Manga sells international
There's really two differences
1) Japanese manga usually doesn't have absurd over the top uniforms, otherwise there's plenty of heroes that are empowered in some way above the average person, usually in some unque way.
2) A kind of SJW existed when I was a kid several decades ago. They made Real life violence and real life weapons verboten in a good portion of media, especially if children were involved. There would be a moral panic if the protagonists in children's media didn't distinguish themselves from reality with in part the costume and with abilities that are fictitious. A comic that focused on guns and swords (close enought to knives) would be completely out of the question. Once you remove those, you no longer have counterpart to a good portion of manga.

Wouldn't Sega C&D the shit out of him though?
Sega is probably the only company in the world that hires people for violating their copyrights instead of legally raping them, so I don't think they'd give a shit about anything Sonichu-related. Nintendo and GameFreak, on the other hand, would try to take everything.

The dude has a serious persecution complex.
EDIT:
And ALL of his comics are like this. I'm shocked that after Image published Michelle Perez, they would turn down this. Just goes to show just how off putting his comics were. I love that he's trying to armbar Image into publishing his racist strips. Seems we've finally passed the peak of Social Justice infection (:optimistic:) and the anti-bodies finally stopped fucking around.

A lot of left-leaning second- and third-generation Asians in the US get like this. Presumably it's because their parents insist on cramming them through the American university system, and there they learn to their horror that on the progressive stack "cis het Asian" is barely above white. They think if they can gin up enough imaginary oppression they can maybe move up a rung or two. (See also: American Jews, every basic white girl who discovered in college they were actually a Tumblr genderspecial, etc.)

I expect it wasn't anti-SJW pushback that killed his comic, but LGBTQQIA+ POCs with more oppression points and their industry enablers shutting him down because he's a fucking white yellow male.

Just a guess, though.

EDIT (to avoid double-posting):

1) Japanese manga usually doesn't have absurd over the top uniforms, otherwise there's plenty of heroes that are empowered in some way above the average person, usually in some unque way.

Just as an observation, My Hero Academia, heavily inspired by western superheroes in art style and content, occupied just shy of half the US adult graphic novels top 20 last year. I don't think it's the costumes or the premises of western superhero comics that are causing the audience disconnect here.

Sega is run by idiots and children. its all fine as long as they dont damage their IPs and dont lose to much money. the Yakuza behind Sammy want to clean up some money with sega, they dont wanna burn it,

Konami is a bit different, they work in the same field, but they have produced most of their IPS themself and are much tighter run.

Nintendo and GameFreak, on the other hand, would try to take everything.
they are making alot of money for some people and they are associated with some yakuza clan, but not just a front.

Or he's just a shithead and everyone who interacts with him realizes that.

I dunno, I suppose that's also a possibility but it seems pretty :optimistic: to me.

If just blatantly being a shithead was enough to get someone shut out of the comics industry, we wouldn't have a 562 page thread here talking about the antics of about Mags, that one tranny who threatened to snap Ya Boi's neck last year, Gail Simone, Hoejabi Wilson, Kwanzer, Mark Waid, etc.

I just find it hilarious that these imbeciles and piles of dead wood are trying to make a union, probably because they know that they can be dropped at any time if the industry wasn't snorting crack and just reaping the sins of turning cheapo storybooks into autismal collectors items.

Basically these contracted cunts want tenure and the ability to get money for no work if they fuck it up, which won't work because their skill level is so bad you can probably lease shit to Chris-chan at this rate and get a better return.
The first strike would be the last. Some JET teacher or dude stationed in Japan would be hitting up Pixiv artists and blowing up phones at Marvel.
It would be funny to see the woke crowd going full populist though.

Exactly. When they left the newstand they needed to develop an outreach program to drive new consumers into specialty retailers. They didn't because smart people don't work in the comics industry. If you look at the tabletop industry, they're always working to drive people into stores and acquire new players through the promotion of organized play and assorted new player goodies. The comics industry is doing nothing to drive new people into stores other than "Free comics day" which is a joke.

The comics publishers should consider themselves lucky that the TCG craze happened right as the comics industry was falling apart in the 90's. That saved plenty of shops. The TCG craze probably saved the comics industry because without those shops the industry would have died.

Western superhero, when done right, is basically the same thing as shonen.

As an aside I don't think Marvel and DC are going anywhere they are owned by megacorps after all but if the industry burns down don't expect to see much of anything except MCU and Trinity crap in places like Walmart and BooksaMillion.

Smaller publishers like IDW * provided they don't get bought out by Hasbro *,Dynamite and Image are the ones that are at biggest risk imo.

Assuming this 60k number is real then it looks like the right combination of poutrage, attacks on Priest, and the EVS cover (despite not being connected to the current story) made enough noise to make Vampirella a huge seller.

SJWs:
  • Hate Vampirella's costume
  • Try to label Priest as a transphobe
  • Hate @FROG and try to end his comics career
  • Boycott Dynamite comics
*Vampirella breaks franchise record sales.*

I think we helped, but in truth, Dynamite Comics is very good at reading the room and making money when everyone else is failing. My Vampi cover probably didn't move the needle. It's going to heat my pool, though.

It's simple. Just hire the best talent and do the best, truest version of a popular character. No social justice. Just give fans of a character what they're hoping for. And with Vampirella, that's sex and horror. The FCBD zero issue was beautiful.

Never forget Gail Simone's Vampirella redesign.

I don't know. The Japanese industry is very competitive and, as a result, very responsive to customer feedback. If you remove artists from that environment, will they be able to perform to the same standard, or will they become lazy and entitled like American artists?

I think it's more likely Disney would outsource to Koreans than the Japanese.

Gee I wonder which would sell more. /sneed

Frankly, I'd love to see a return to Frank Thorne's Red Sonja design more than anything. SJWs love to focus on the chainmail bikini, but no one bothers to give her wild hair and eyes anymore, choosing instead to make her more traditionally pretty.

Her hair is literally screaming along with her.

Here her hair is coiled like a cobra about to strike.

Pay attention comic scrubs, this is what happens when you ignore the outrage mobs and just focus on getting that money. You get that fucking money.
