Nobody wants to touch them due to the reputation. The main owner has been funneling money from the users very blatantly with excuses of needing to pay for medication, and site fundraising, etc, only to be caught a day later buying $1500 worth of characters. My friend linked me a blog that covers a lot of it.
There's a toyhouse bulletin I'm gonna do my best to post here in a text form for those who can't access it, but I'm still a bit retarded about this posting stuff so apologies if it's a disaster, but its a better write up of the disasters with SFes than I've seen anywhere else, sourced by the csmeaner tumblr.
it's pretty meaty, I cut some out just to not spam with so many images that I felt weren't very relevant content wise, but can add them in if people would prefer it. I noted in the spoilers where I did that just for clarification.

There was a call to brick the person who did it. In this case Darci. Darci and the admins tried to pass it off as a joke all in good fun, but it was basically throwing rocks at Darci.
The design is in poor taste mainly because the admins are so detached from the user base that they probably don’t even realize what the brick means. Which is why it is so funny that they took it down. It got low bids. If you want higher bids, make better designs."
The design was reauctioned with a higher SB of 80usd screenshot below, and in the end bought for 100usd.

Since taking ownership Darci has been making money from Scarfox, and has been buying adopts with that money. That is not an issue for most users, after all, it's her species. What has not been accepted though is Darci's shadiness for the whole thing, either by reneging on promises of not doing sales or even supposedly lying about a sale in order to buy another adopt under her community's noses, or just constantly doing sales and not offering the things she promised or even updates on them. A call for transparency on how much Darci earns and thus spends on the sight was shut down.
We don't care if Darci spends money she rightfully made from Scarfox on adopts or her friends or anything else, as stated in the funds issue above. We just want her to be honest and stop sneaking around, only to complain of people stalking her when we've had no choice but to keep an eye on her activity as she won't be transparent ever. Below will be a list of all sales and noted purchases Darci has made, with noticeable attention to the dates as they often coincide with drama happening in the community.

Yeah, you're right on the ball with that. I don't wish to PL too much but I have witnessed some hardcore stalking from the CS community after somebody gets blacklisted. The funny thing? The people who do the witch-hunting usually have even bigger skeletons in the closet. All projection.
They're also the same sorts of people who hate Kiwifarms but will viciously document someone's life because they said the gamer word in a private chat.

I think the thing that baffles me the most about this entire concept of closed species is why? There's dozens if not hundreds of unique species from Vidya and fiction and the countless thousands of real world animals to choose from, but instead you go for some generic niche shit that has a paywall behind it to simply associate with it. What possible value could you find from that?

I think it's mostly like school cliques. Why have your own to build from scratch when you can spend a high amount of money to be with the geeks, emos, jocks, bookworms, etc? A lot of these CS have DeviantArt groups and Discord to gather at and it helps boost the visibility of your page by hanging around them.
The NFT comparison is very accurate too cos you can boast about owning a set of pastel pixels and no one else can own it (though you can still right-click and save).
Plus, if it's something made by someone popular, people would buy into it to

A couple people have mentioned NFTs, I'm actually fairly surprised that hasn't gotten involved here. Out of all the possible uses for NFTs, transfer of ownership of digital art is probably the closest to being a legitimate use.
Of course the couple times I've heard of this shit it's been obvious you're dealing with the mentally ill and the loser children of rich, absent parents. If you did something sensible like attach an adoptable to the blockchain to indicate ownership, it might remind everyone that the real world exists, and that would ruin their week.
Of course by the time someone is established in the furry community, they're probably so detached from reality and decency that they'll just wind up blowing it all on fur suits, drugs, and piles of dildos anyways, so.

I figured I'll mention just for informative reasons not every character in a CS cost USD. You can get in via events or trade someone for art or another character for their design if they're down for it. However the events are few and far between because $$$.
The real idiots are the ones ABing on adopts the CS owners make, because the designs are usually dogshit and nobody else wants to pay the 200+ you did, you can see some people relist at full and only get ~$100 or less back for it. It's usually not the design itself people bid highly for its the FOMO on something made by a popular artist, so the resell value is not there. You could spend less on a MYO or get one via free event / trade, and make something better with the free allowed traits 90% of the time. It's a shitty business that preys upon manic women.
I'll never forget the audacity of the person trying to resell the $2500 dainty they bought (it was posted earlier in this thread, lime green kid lookin one) for full. $2500.
Speaking of Dainties, someone saw the cash cow in satyr's with funky legs and decided they could literally do that too and people are eating it up. I haven't seen much drama yet, but let me introduce you to Seraphyres:
Ball jointed dainties with a candlestick on their tail. No, they are not related or an offshoot of the maker of Dainties, an example of what one looks like;
For the most part, I've noticed bootleg CS don't really eat each other alive when they're blatant knockoffs for some reason? but bootleg one-offs send you into an internet hate mob.
Hell, Karelums are 100% ripoffs of Scarfoxes / Sergals only shittier and actively advertise in the scarfox server. Basically, they're all in on the same grift of capitalizing on mentally ill women

On the upside, people seem to be more en-masse leaving CS, it's easy to get one if you REALLY WANT ONE for some reason for basically nothing at all some people want out so bad. A lot of the species are just inactive, and the big ones have been majority exposed for how bad their grifting is. People are catching on you're payng for something that's giving you nothing in return. That doesn't mean it'll be going away anytime soon, but the communities are slowly bleeding out in my opinion, the drama is definitely here to stay though.

i really don't understand the notion of buying a character at all
personally, to me, the fun seems to be in designing them, but i always saw it as more like, say, an author/game designer/some other creative type who's good at everything except character designs and just wants to buy a look for their mc so they dont have to focus on that and instead move on to the coding/writing or whatever aspect they're strong in- its not uncommon for people to "purchase a character design" for a thing theyre making, it's no different than a producer hiring a character designer except more streamlined

I think originally that's what it was for, as is now I think some is DnD, other is fursonas when you can't draw, etc. For the rest it's seeing something you like in an artstyle you like, and getting a connection to it like a dress or shirt or whatever, you want people to recognize it's now yours while supporting an artist and getting to feel better that the jpeg that gave you dopamine is now your jpeg to show off and flex, even if nobody cares about it other than you and theyall would of literally just right click-> save as.
CS makes it easier to "worldbuild" and get people to want your characters / admire them / recognize them / etc, the popular CS originally became popular (IMO) because they're simplistic to draw and even the most mediocre artist draw a cccat / grem / sf.
So in short terms, acessbility, an easy to draw template, and minor lore / worldbuilding that can send every little autistic brain crazy with ideas, all the hard lifting of character creation done for you for the measely price of $20+ depending on what you're purchasing.
Every CS / paid ARPG is it's own little CWCville, you just have to pay an entry fee to get in. Only then does the realization hit you just gave your money to see some 2d barebones cutouts in furry suits while the news hits the owner is a grifting literal motherfucker is the most simplest way to put it, I hope I explained that OK.

From the people I know who collect characters? It's absolutely e-hoarding. They literally impulse buy neat (by their standards) character designs, and then never do anything with them after the mania wears off.

As someone who has adopted characters with real money before, it's absolutely like that. I don't feel any connection to the characters I bought so therefore, don't feel compelled to use them. Hell, I've lost the reference pictures so I don't even remember what they look like anymore.
The design process, however frustrating it can be sometime, is a lot more rewarding when you get the design that looks just right and you can truly call it yours.
I'll take frustrating design sessions over adoptions any day.
