If I'm not wrong there's a huge ass pdf coming out soon with a crap ton of closed species (like I think there were more than a 1000 pages) and the person making it said that it's so huge that some phones might have problems with it :stress:
Like Jesus how many recoloured furry dogs are there out there??
is it some kind of zine showcasing art of many different species? or a catalog for one?

Like a Google drive pdf catalogue so people can make non official oc's of those species in the document. It's more so people know said species guides and make oc's without spending cash on the creator.

Edit: after going to said person's tiktok they uploaded a tiktok a week ago with a link that showed the document being 3490 pages of those guide pictures of closed species as they're trying to put every single closed specie they can find. I REPEAT EVERY SINGLE CLOSED SPECIE THEY FIND. 3490 PAGES
:stress:
They also said they're going to upload it on march 24th and they recommend using an iPhone or high end tablet or a pc from the sheer size of it. Seriously Jesus Christ the monstrosity that has to be that fucking document

So if it's not even to buy one what's the fucking POINT lol. Just design a character.

I cannot believe people buy into this, especially considering you can just draw these yourself with no consequence whatsoever save for some spergs on shitter getting mad over it.
Hoping this dumb fad blows over, we shouldn't restrict the creative liberty of autistic people online, it decreases the chances to find absurd yet funny pieces made with whatever strange intent and design they have floating around in the back of their head.

Also holy shit that's a big doc.

one thing i kinda understand is the fact that, if you WERE to simply draw one of these things, not everyone will respect it and you cant as easy pass it in certain circles
people within the cult will shun you
people from outside of it wont easily know what a... "sparkywarky" or a "superbagelbluecat" or whatever the species name is... you'd always have to point back towards the community youre banned from for reference

its like if, say, satyrs or something were a protected species
you could design yourself one, but youd have to tell everyone its a satyr, youre operating under someone else's creation
sure you can say "umm its a guy whos half goat... and he lives in the woods... and he gets piss drunk and idk rapes people or whatever satyrs do...." but its so much easier to just say "hes a satyr" and everyone gets it... but then the name and origin you gave your chara is directly associated with someone else's work, something you cant easily disconnect yourself from if the gods themselves came down from olympus and went "right, cut that out... i didnt authorize your deviantart page"

Fair enough, i suppose the peer pressure thing does kind of work.. i mean it clearly does as there are people that actually take the whole closed species thing seriously and pay A LOT of money for their OC donut steels.
I suppose it becomes a game of "do I give a shit?", and if the answer is no then you are free to do as you please, just be prepared to have whiny retards shouting on your art page or whatever people use these days.
Not having a major presence in any of these communities probably also helps a lot, if you're a literally who with some "illegal" closed species OC then who will be there to get mad about it.

then again, if youre a literal who who just wants these ocs in order to doodle em alone r make comics about them for yourself or something normal like that
why on earth would you even want one of these characters? its very rare for them to be actually interesting with unique lore or biology, and those that are, generally tend to be made by rational people and have more reasonable communities, because it actually takes a mature and creative individual to invent something worth making
most of the ones made by crybaby e-children that'll throw a fit cause you drew something without permission are shit, i cant imagine if youre not interested in the community that youd be scampering to get the rights to some fluffy donut dog or a snail with personalized wheelies

You raise a solid point, there are very few closed species that i've seen that are any worthwhile, they're usually just variations and combinations of various themes or species and it never looks good beyond a vanity standpoint.
The only ones i personally think look interesting are the protogen things, i like tech stuff, though i couldn't care less about whatever passes as lore for them.
All of the cool species i've found up till this point aren't monetized in any capacity, truly those who have actual creative spirit would rather see others share in it then stifle creative liberty for their own profit.

Hoping this dumb fad blows over
I'd agree with you, but Closed Species have been a constant since about 2015ish and I highly highly doubt it's a fad
This is just how things are now
It's depressing as sin and probably going to stunt any artist who falls into its trap but I don't have faith in this cult fading anymore
will always dream of it though

None of these species are trademarked so you have every legal authority to just take it and draw what you want. If you want a semblance of ownership, trademark that shit. That would require you to actually work on a franchise that becomes marketable. If you can't do that, stop whining. The protogens are shitty ripoffs of existing Japanese designs. They're gay, lame and if you like them, you're a furfag and probably halfway into becoming a tranny.

On paper this is true and I'd be inclined to agree, but in reality most "closed" species are just:
-Real animals or public domain mythical creatures with specific non-animal parts/accessories
-Hybrids of real animals and/or public domain mythical creatures, or
-Generic fantasy creatures with specific anatomy
Thus, no reason you couldn't just tell people an offbrand creation was just a dog or whatever.

Furries especially always have a mile-long list of reasons their characters are super specialer than everyone else anyway. They wouldn't bat an eye at a manta ray/bat hybrid that had psychic powers. Specific names are, as far as I'm aware, the only thing any species owner has managed to trademark, so you wouldn't want to use the "official" name anyway unless you wanted to keep the association for some reason.

For those new to this and wondering how the fuck is this a thing.

"Fools and their money are soon parted."

I'd like to remind you NFT's are a thing. Make more sense now? :story:
this is older than NFTs, and at least in some ways, dumber

at least NFTs promised worth for your product
no one who bought one thought it was a masterpiece, it was just something you could own alongside a virtual token, and frankly thats probably what killed it because other cryptocurrency is still alive

I got through almost 1k pages (out of 4593 pages) of that first doc, and 90% of it is just... people reinventing animals. So, nothing new for closed species.

Most of the length comes from the author including literally fucking everything about each species' lore and traits. 30 pages are dedicated to a species called Hell cats (which may have been deleted by the og creator). 60 pages are dedicated to something called Mawmaws. A whopping 200 pages are taken up just by Kamishibas, which is a pretty big CS that I've never even heard of. They also included almost every species they could find regardless of quality, I'm pretty sure there's more than one species guide in there that was drawn by a 14-year-old in MS paint.

I realised, though, that the only thing worse than a CS with 1000 different traits and entire novels of lore... is a CS that looks exactly the same every single time. You could never draw an uncoloured sketch of two or more Xeros together, because most of them share the same fucking shape.

Another problem of these things is that only a very small group knows what those things even are. So usability outside of that community is quite limited, excluding particularly famous or infamous ones. So that just mostly defeats the purpose of even commiting a heinous act of stealing a meme.

The unnoticed but important part of the package, I guess, would be a community of like-minded individuals who share the same system of value, who understand, why drawing a crab near a generic catboy costs so much money.
