https://youtube.com/watch?v=d3Nz8maBmxkCivvie makes a rare foray into 40k. I think he sums up the game pretty well.
For once I'm pretty much in full agreement with Civvie here. Fun game, good game, not a great game. Definitely not the "boomer shooter" it was advertised to be. It's more like an arena shooter with sprite enemies. Played through it once, probably not gonna play it again.

I found it pretty soulless.

it's just a generic "muh nostalgia" shooter which tries to cause nostalgia tears, yet fails at that and some other things.

Perhaps the cause of this is that the main hero is ultrasmurf. Should've been Black Templar or Iron Hand instead.

I think it had to be a Ultra Marine cause the game is a sequel to Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine.

Given that the story involves the Ordo Malleus simply plucking a marine seconded to their command to investigate, they actually could use other chapters if they wish. But of course, they'd lose the little banter which has the marine referring to Titus (the chad) occasionally.

"boomer shooter" is not a term used by actual human beings. I can see why Civvie is still in the correctional facility.

The protagonist being a Space Marine was part of the problem, at least with the way his lines were written or delivered. The guy had none of the zeal or the devotion you could hear on smurf battlecries in Dawn of War or the Space Marine game itself. Those taunts lacked the bombast and weight you'd expect from a 7' tall religious zealot, and whoever they got to VA it needed to be bass-boosted at least 10db before he sounded even remotely like a Space Marine.

Compare the taunts in that game to this dude:

Nah, it's just fun rather than nostalgic. A blank soulless game wouldn't have put so much effort in making a lot of the setting, enemies and weapons fit the game as much as it does. Like making the plasma gun overload of chaos champions reviving.

It would have been cool if the taunt would have debuffed enemies rather than just make them all beeline towards you.

He's working up to the first Deus Ex, swear to god. That joke about difficulty settings...

I played the old unpatched version of stalker when it was released and IIRC the base he ended up in was a pain in the ass because it has a lot of good gear/weapons but everyone in it respawns/repopulates at a certain interval leading to a WW1 trench warfare situation. You have to kill more dudes to get out but also loot more to make up for the huge loss in ammo and when you've finally gained a yard the dudes are back and needs to be killed and looted again.

I dropped it on episode 2, very meh. Had less of a problem with the smurf's lines and more with the enemies not having any, made the sorcerer fight more annoying since it's a hide and seek boss with no audio hints.

Wonder when we'll get System Shock or if he'll just skip to the remake. Not as topical as the game isn't on peoples' radars as much anymore but maybe when Nightdive does the SS2 "remaster" because he's too lazy to mod it himself.

I played the first 2 games and they're average but the gore is fucking amazing especially the 2nd one. I thought he edited out the gore completely but he only censored the gore in the intro.

Edit: it immediately got age-restricted so expect this to get privated and a re-upload to happen.

What really impressed me in the first game was the train(?) section where a helicopter shows up and starts blasting. I decided to try and snipe the pilot, shot him in the face and it went down. That sounds really silly now but in action shooters you were always supposed to kill the vehicle, not one-hit-kill the driver of the vehicle.

You could also do that in the Predator campaign in AVP 2 where you could use the speargun to headshot the general in the mech and instantly defeat the boss.

Heh, all the things he thought the first SOF game was going to be (slow-paced, tactical, realistic) is exactly what the sequel is, to the point that the lean button becomes absolutely essential in it.

Wonder if he’ll review that game? May be a bit of an unpopular opinion, but I actually like the second game more, though that also has to do with its much better gore.
