His Thief video(s) are fun. I think his issue is that he's gone to the well a few too many times on the oldschool shooters and now he's stuck covering newer stuff that just isn't as interesting because partly that no one has really played them or they're perpetual Early Access (fuck that noise). If we could actually get the Blood source code magically and suddenly the doors opened to easy modding the well would be full again but that said he hasn't touched any Duke3D mods that I'm aware of, has he?
The Thief videos are great and I think there's a treasure of early 2000 shooters he could get into if that's all he does. But I would prefer if he branched out to at least theme-adjacent games of sorts, like Nocturne might be a good fit. It's not a great game but it is interesting and it led into the craptastic Bloodrayne franchise that later spawned an Uwe Boll movie.
He should do different types of games more often.

I haven't heard someone bring up Nocturne in fuckin forever.

You're right. You could almost just grab some back issues of PC Gamer from the 90s and start picking stuff that looks interesting and go from there. Older stuff has a retro/nostalgia vibe to it that you don't get with the newer games.

The "who?" and "why?" are often really good parts of his videos. There's a history attached to old, maybe failed or often forgotten games and that can't be said about currently early-access games.

He pretty much went the way of the AVGN and ran out of games to talk about. You could see in The Suffering that he slowly realizes talking about the more modern shooters is just doing a plot synopsis rather than talk about gameplay or the people behind the game.
So now the choice is either talk on slav jank, dig for even more obscure titles, or do a Nostalgia Critic and talk about new soulless shit.

I feel like there was a fair bit more he could have talked about when it came to The Suffering, maybe touched upon the music production and its inspiration being owed in large part to Mortal Kombat Deception, given how the original game comes bundled with a developer interview videos that he could have pulled from, and he really could have explored some of the game itself in more depth, but I guess it just had themes too unsuitable for YouTube.

Which is strange to consider since he covered Postal 2 and 4. And had to Age Restrict his first Postal 4 video because it was apparently TOO YouTube unfriendly.

I don't know. I would like it if he started covering of those early 2000s shooters but he needs to not half-ass it like he did with The Suffering.

I think the answer is simply he doesn't know and doesn't care enough about the game to do that. That's the difference between him and Mandalore or Sseth when it comes to doing these games that you can tell he doesn't have strong feelings for or is especially attached to (and he admits it too) - those guys go into such autistic detail about games because they really get into whatever it is they're doing a video about and it shows in the care and quality..

Not shitting on Civvie, just saying that this video wasn't fun to watch compared to his other stuff because this isn't his wheelhouse and not his strength.

I personally hope he actually breaks his long-standing rule about not talking about mods. There's plenty worth digging up if he cared to. (I'd definitely watch Civvie review the wackier mods of Doom, or just touch on the bigger 32map WADs that had been produced over the decades.)

Boomer shooter revival has outlived it's course. Civvie is gonna have to adapt or die.
I don't even think it's dead per se, I think the early access model of releasing shit before it's done has killed the enthusiasm because (speaking for myself ) I hate playing unfinished games that have no end in sight and are potentially sitting on bugs and problems that go unfixed forever. How many of the boomer shooter/revival games everyone hypes up aren't even close to being done? I bought Gloomwood because I'm very excited for it and loved what we've got so far but realistically I almost want to put it in a drawer and forget about it until they fucking finish it but I don't think it'll be done for years and years, which is kind of embarrassing and annoying.

EDIT - speaking of exactly what I'm referring to, Cultic Chapter One is now out. I played the demo and liked it but it ran kinda poorly for a game that is supposed to be aping a retro-FPS. Pretty fast and chunky with nice environments and level design and the price seems really really reasonable. https://store.steampowered.com/app/1684930/CULTIC/

Once again, I'm inclined to point to his Postal series, in which he DID cover two TC mods for Postal 2: Eternal Damnation and Corkscrew Rules ("licensed addon" is a technical excuse when it's basically a mod in practice and original implementation).

Though I suppose those can technically get a pass due to the fact that no one really covers Postal mods, and we have multiple different channels at this point who have built their reputations on Doom and Doom WADs.

Easy. Most of them aren't. I can only think of a small handful that are considered "full retail" by this point.

I wouldn't mind see him doing more adventure point and click adventure games. Like I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream.

Such a shame both videos are dull shite. Fear review especially.
At least Fear had some good action shots. But Cultic just feels... Uninteresting.
Like what's the point of endlessly repeating a dead genre without making any new twist on it? No interesting weapons, enemies, story or design, at best a better AI.
If you want Blood just play Blood.

It really shows how gaming is fucking dead. AAA trying to remake the same currently best selling game, Indie trying to remake parts of the industry when it didn't suck monkey balls. There is no progress, just endless decay.

Ya know, if I had 1$ for every time some faggot was going "Gaming is fucking deeaad!", I'd probably have enough to buy a PS5 by now, or at least the new Xbone. Seriously, fuck off with this annoying hipster shit.

Haven't watched Civvie's video yet, but I've played the first level of Cultic, and the rifle is one of the most satisfying guns I've used in an FPS for some time.

Civvie's videos haven't been terribly interesting to me lately; but I can vouch that CULTIC is pretty damn good. That and AMID EVIL are probably my favorite boom shoots.

Dusk, Turbo Overkill, Amid Evil, and Cultic are truly some of the finest shooting games I’ve played within the last 5 years. Prodeus was also very good and has an awesome level editor.

Excuse me, at least call me old fag rather than hipster. But at least for me it's been years since any game came out I had actual hype for, while a lot of good game series I follow seemingly get gutted as more sequels are churned out.
