https://youtube.com/watch?v=kh_pTUZjXJAedit: i started watching it but i don't think i can get through 30 minutes of first person roguelike, fuck off civvie
The Alien 3 reference made me smile.
It's pretty much what I expected, far more of a playthrough than a review since Civvie is too scared to actually criticize a new game and face backlash from jannies.
The game looks like a mess where you basically roll a dice and hope for something broken enough to get by the bullshit the game throws at you. Oh yeah, having a final boss which insta kills you on it's second stage with no way to anticipate is good design in a roguelike.
The important thing is to criticize old games for bad game design and infuriating enemy placement and then suck the dick of modern roguelites who don't even bother to do that.

I tried playing it a while ago and just couldn't get into the game play loop. Roguelike's live and die based on how bullshit the RNG can be. Personally, I am burnt out over the whole genre of Roguelikes.

Didn’t Civie do some MandaloreGaming bullshit to a smaller YouTuber? I know Civie had a semi-official Discord that banned anyone who made edgy jokes, but I think that was because Civie had a fairly large speed runner audience (trannies) who used him to find lesser known games to speed run.

I don’t know why you personally are offended by Civie not saying, “I hate niggers.” The only person who has the gall to say that was Sseth and he openly steals old jokes from /v/. Civie is mostly stealing shit from old forums and you can still find a lot of his jokes on those forums.

To be honest, NR has been one of my favorites from the modern Boomer Shooter craze. Dusk and Amid Evil didn't grab me despite looking good and playing good. Here, it's essentially weapons, enemies and block like levels that get randomly placed together to form a level. There is randomness to it but once you know how the monsters attack, the guns work and the possible effects added to weapons, it becomes a shooter like Dusk but with the added randomisation that stops it from getting boring. It's not a shooter in the traditional sense, more a sandbox where you're given lots of toys to play around with.
It's also perfect for me as I'll play 1 or 2 levels for a few minutes then move onto something else and come back to it. It could be a bit dragging in longer play times but as bite-sized level chucks you can play a few times a day just to clear your head, it's perfect.

I'm also not sure how Civvie would approach how you would play this apart from a playthrough. You could say something like I think Hulshult's music does fit sometimes, the stuttering is a problem which wasn't in episode 2 and the randomness is enough to turn some people off but to me this is one I love simply because the dev worked his hardest on it for such a long time and it shows.

I really couldn't get into Nightmare Reaper, or any shooter who tries to do procedural level design, specially if it's 90-degree angle stuff inspired by Wolfenstein, i had the same problem with Project Warlock (despite it having actual levels).

Wait, Project Warlock had procedural level design?

I got that one wrong, i was thinking of STRAFE, but my other criticism of it still remains, 90-degree angle stuff really limits what you can do with level design, making it less interesting than sector or brush based level design.

I hated Strafe. Best thing about it was the commercial. The only Roguelike FPS that I liked were Heavy Bullets (that you can buy for $1) and Immortal Redneck (that I would recommend during a sale for $5 or maybe $10).

I bought a big box version of this from a grocery store bargain bin back in the 2000s or so along with Realms of the Haunting and Quest for Glory... V? The spooky one.

I remember installing this on my Dad's laptop while he and Mum went out for dinner and feeling immediately motion sick in a way that I have never felt before. The game literally made me ill. That said, good video, I enjoyed the energy and the slav jank and the education because I always thought it used the Quake engine but turns out I was totally wrong. Always loved the little details they used in the first level(s) that completely went out the window later.
Chasm was a game that never got a proper release in the USA. I recall reading about it in some magazines, and, "Coming soon" freebie magazines from babbage's or whatever, then, it never turned up.

I am curious what went wrong with this game's release, since most people, if they found it back in the 90s, did as I, and found it in a bargain bin.

Also, there was some additional episode released, with snow. I still have it. It was available for download on the Chasm site, when that was still around.

I'll be one of these fellow challenged intellectuals that don't get the appeal of Postal games at all.
You are not alone, friend. I could never really get into the games, and I remember playing Postal 2 right when it came out, I thought it was "very okay" and I've had some mild chuckles, but that was it. I don't remember finishing the game, maybe I did, but I don't remember.

Clearly we're not its target audience, the "Adult Swim, Eric Andre is peak comedy/Stoner" kinda gamer.

They were offensive to bible thumpers, but this days the games are about as offensive as the average Rick and Morty episode.
The game itself looks like shit, unless Civvie runs this on some ancient hardware it's not even worth pirating. The only way to make it vaguely interesting is if you could have pressed N to say Nigger.

There's only one possible way for that to happen and that's not going to be done by devs by any means.
Nobody wants to deal with autistic niggerscreechers because of the happy N-pass. :(

I dunno so much about being "offensive to bible thumpers", the game mostly came out in that Jack Thompson era and the game thing was less being "offensive" and more being a satire about America at the time. So, think more like South Park in video game form, and that's why everyone liked Postal 2 because it was so over the top and crazy it was. Sure, it wasn't like say GTA games, but it never tried to reach those levels.

Which, I surprised, don't have a thread here. What a shame...
I mean why even make a thread about the guy? Everyone saw he was a hack who clearly had a grudge on video games. Heck, most positive thing you can say when Zoe Quinn and Anita crawled out, he called em out for being shameless grifters and while he still isnt a fan of violent videogames, he couldnt stand those two bimbos.

I got Postal 2 for two dollars, the devs are funny people, and the game's absurdist and over the top humor as well as scalable difficulty and the dedicated mod community gives it a certain longevity. It's funny to see them take potshots at everyone, and surprising to see just how long they churned out little updates to a small little property.

Somewhere along the line, curious creatures wandered into the world of gaming and convinced everyone that you could only ever make games that tried to appeal to the widest demographic possible, as opposed to making games that you found fun and that appealed to people with those same sensibilities. RWS did not listen to those creatures, and indeed made fun of them - and they got very mad about it. Civvie seems to generally like projects with soul, however misguided the end result may be. And Postal 2's got soul.

As a boomer shooter aficionado Civvie is downright my guy. I kind of wish he'd stop harping about other shit in public, but the man's taste in games is spot on for the most part.

(In outright skill though, Oyff makes him look pretty tepid)

If I want to hear someone shoot the shit about shooters, Civvie. If I want to watch someone absolutely brutalize them, Oyff.
