If you thought Tesla was bad, Ford is trying their hardest to 1up them on the extent of integrated electronic systems that ultimately act as surveillance devices. Big man Greg discusses these on the 7th gen Mustang. This latest gen of Mustangs contains a slew of new "safety features" under the guise of smart tech that has been touted in the auto industry for a while.

Key things he talks about are speed governing, data collection, and data sharing. Like Teslas and other cars these days that are run by tons of computers, this Mustang has the ability to govern your speed based off a locally stored database of road speed limits. If a road does not have that present, the optical sensors are able to read speed signs and enforce the governor that way. It doesn't stop there however. Every sensor's data is collected, from your rate of acceleration, braking force, lateral g forces, down to the seatbelt. All this data is apparently also beamed back to Ford who can do whatever they want with it, including reporting things to the authorities. To make matters worse, even more data is collected if you connect your phone to the Ford Sync system. Apparently when you do this, the car's entertainment system is given permission to read your texts, the people you've called and their numbers, and parse through your contacts list, all of which can be harvested.

Owners of older cars we keep winning.

Not saying those can't or won't be harvested but it's always done that with Sync or any infotainment system to be able to read your texts to you and voice-rec your contact list.

The speed sign thing has been done by them over in Europe for a while. The real fear is someone will make it mandatory - some are calling for that.

Yeah the potential to take it further and have your car snitch on you for bogus infractions is now there and will definitely be used and abused once people have been conditioned.

Tonight I made a shifter boot for one of my cars. I didn't want to make it but I couldn't buy one in the color I wanted. I wasn't able to sew in the metal retaining ring with my machine so as I was sitting there hand sewing it I thought about all of the time that it took to make this stupid little thing and I realized that I had just made a $200 shifter boot with less than a dollar's worth of material.

I was but I realized that I’m almost done paying my truck. It’ll be a decently big down payment towards something newer. I’m either thinking used f80 m3, m550i or Audi rs3, s7/rs7, s4, or if I want American probably an ATS V.

You're kind of all over the place with those picks. The RS3 is, imo, the coolest of the bunch and they can make retarded power tuned. However, it's just a golf underneath with the best powerplant.

F80s are...well, don't get into any kind of front end collision or they're totaled due to how expensive things are on them. They are beautiful though.

I assume you mean the B9 S4, those are, again, very fast if tuned. But Audi's engine placement sucks and you always feel it. For Audi in general, if RS is an option, get it. The S models aren't much more than a better power plant, but you have to do everything else that you would think would be done. Brake cooling, suspension, etc.

Project cars are fun.

So how y'all feel about the used car market these days? I'm looking for a second car and feel the prices are batshit insane. I'm kind of worried if I drop fat cash on an LC 500, that it's going to sink faster than your mom in a diving belt

Still insane, just less so. The trend has been going down; but I won't try to predict the future and tell you it'd be a good purchase or not.
Depending on your price range, new is still better at times iirc.

Frankly though, if you're looking at an LC500 which is what, 80-100k used right now, is resale something you're really worried about? It's a good looking car, and seems to be holding value well right now. If it's a short term car, I'd go for it. Long term? Eh. It's pretty special, but it's a, frankly, no name Lexus.

Based on this review, I'd pick one up in an instant if I could.

I've been looking at a whole bunch of cars (S-Class Coupe, Vantage, F-Type, LC500 etc...) and the LC 500 is as good a drive as one can expect from a heavy as fuck coupe (I'm coming from an S2000 and Evora for reference). The interior is lovely, the noise is good and it's a pretty comfortable cruiser. I like the S-coupe, but I'm not sure about Merc reliability these days, and they come with a bit of a 'dickhead' factor too. The icing on the cake is that in Germany, Lexus cars come with a 15 year warranty provided you service the cars with an official dealership...

My plan is to buy and release in a year or so.

S2000 and Evora
Have you lived with something heavy? I went from something Light-ish, an e36 to an S4 and holy shit, the power is nice but it really changes how you drive / experience the car.

We know the Teutonic cars always tank in value, Jap ones seem to hold it. I think it's as safe a bet as you can make in what an unsafe market cars are. The driving experience alone seems like it'd hold its value compared to the rather un-special experience the Germans are offering.

I can't help with Merc reliability, I haven't heard anything horrible but I also haven't looked into them much.

Of the cars you listed, I think the LC500 would be the most reliable and safest resale bet, I wouldn't consider the S-Class or F-Type, AMs seem to be a little hit and miss on resale; but I think it'd depreciate more. It might be worth the depreciation though, YMMV.

Todd from Project Farm has put a whole ton of upgrades on his 1996 RAM in a collab with Power Driven Diesel.

This is one of those videos where I had to slow it down. There's a ton of info crammed into a PF video at the best of times, but what most YouTubers would do across 4 or 5 half-hour episodes has been cut down to just 18 minutes whilst losing very little (if any) of the granular details. Very impressive!

I'm interested in seeing the second part. I can't believe how slow his 12 valve is even after all the upgrades. I had a 24 valve Cummins that was about 8 years newer than his and it ran like a scalded dog with a little tuning.

I'm phone posting and too lazy to multiquote, but on the point about the latest gen mustang and Ford doing what everyone already knows, why would you pay for an internet connection for your car? I have a few friends that do and I don't understand the advantage. I upgrade all my cars to have handsfree calling and that's about it as far as 'technology'. Cars should be like a shovel and just work.

Imagine if car manufacturers were forced to give you a 10 year warranty and how easy it would be to work on things. Everyone is jerking themselves off about the environment so this would be perfect

Humm a Rapide is distracting me from biting the bullet on an LC500...decisions decisions
I think people would be more impressed with the AM because muh badge / name. Either way, decent choices and I'm jelly of your tough decision. GL

Any car bros who are or have done project cars, have any regrets / words of advice for someone starting on one? Things you wish you did differently, things you realise you didn't need to or that you should have done, etc. etc. etc.

Make sure you have time and space. I made the mistake of setting deadlines and almost none of them were met because you will always run into something here or there you want to address. If you don't have tools or access to them, you'll slowly start to build your own workshop in the process so make sure you have space for them in addition to all the parts from the car.

I put it off for two years, partly due to time, then life, then figuring out what I wanted to do. Went from a LS swap, to rip the engine out and do a full rebuild, now I have finally made some sense and have a project scope and goal in mind.

Thanks for the advice, I think time is the biggest one. Specifically being realistic about it. My buddies spend every weekend working on their shit, I have other interests so yeah, I'll take longer but w/e.

When you get frustrated: TOOLS DOWN. No point going at it angry and not thinking about it and just making whatever you're doing worse.
