Im not sure how much of it is greed directly. Our society and government is calibrated to avoid short term pain. We could have dealt with this debt decades ago by doing some mild austerity. But because of the frequency of elections all you need is the opposite party to promise they'll make things easy again it never works.

Now in the coming decades I shutter to think how brutal the next depression is going to be.

If we had a proper constitution, we could fix that. Pierre Trudeau turned Canada into a dictatorship by making the only constant in government be appointed lifetime positions that HE then appointed, and giving such an insane amending formula that there is no way the constitution will ever be fixed.

The provinces with treaties will be more complicated but that strategy might just work for BC. Except I don't think BC is worth that much to America. Maybe the north east bit so that there can be a land bridge from the state of Alaska to the state of Alberta
