A plan to split California into three separate states has cleared its first hurdle. Supporters are set to begin collecting signatures to qualify for next year's ballot.

The plan is being funded by Bay Area tech billionaire Tim Draper, who previously funded a similar proposal back in 2014 to divide the state up into sections.

Draper argues that citizens would be better served by three smaller state governments, rather than one large one.

The three-way split goes like this: Northern California would include the Bay Area all the way to the Oregon border, Southern California would begin in Fresno and cover most of the southern state.

A new California would begin in Los Angeles county and cover most of the coastal areas.

Opponents say the plan would create chaos.

"Creating three new governments three new legislatures, three new governors and then having to disrupt what we have as a state all our prison systems, our higher education systems," said political analyst Steven Maviglio. "I think diversity is what makes California great and this would actually ruin it."

If the measure were to make it on the ballot and be approved by voters it would also still need permission from Congress.

Speaking as a Democrat, the best thing about California is 55 electoral votes.

If you noticed what nool said, too, that's why it will never happen. Even though it should. We should also bust up Texas, and merge some of these completely uninhabitable wasteland states like Wyoming and Idaho and wherethefuckevenho.

There's one thing standing in the way of Texas being split up and that's Texas. They also have guns and a history, so unlike Commiefornia, they won't be bullied.

The oil & natural gas companies would be pissed if you merged Wyoming with another state. They've set up a very cozy relationship with the government there, something that couldn't really be repeated in a more populous state.

Can't do it. There's no way to fit two more stars on the flag without making it look like shit.

Unless, they were all to be arranged in an offensive shape.

I created a future-proof design, immune to California splitting, Texas seceding, or Puerto Rico becoming a state:

Maybe instead of dreamy whining about splitting up states or seceding by the people who don't get their way every 4 years like clockwork, the losers should focus on why their shitty political platform didn't appeal to enough people to let their team score a goal in the first place.

This is really a bigger issue than the results of this most recent election. From what I understand, California is genuinely a large, ungovernable turd of state because of its size. It goes far beyond the usual urban/rural rivalries you see in any other state. The government seems to be deeply dysfunctional in so many ways.
This is an old interview between Adam Carolla and Tim Draper, the guy who's pushing this plan. It's a good listen. (It's always fun to listen to Adam Carolla talk about competition.)
