A plan to split California into three separate states has cleared its first hurdle. Supporters are set to begin collecting signatures to qualify for next year's ballot.

The plan is being funded by Bay Area tech billionaire Tim Draper, who previously funded a similar proposal back in 2014 to divide the state up into sections.

Draper argues that citizens would be better served by three smaller state governments, rather than one large one.

The three-way split goes like this: Northern California would include the Bay Area all the way to the Oregon border, Southern California would begin in Fresno and cover most of the southern state.

A new California would begin in Los Angeles county and cover most of the coastal areas.

Opponents say the plan would create chaos.

"Creating three new governments three new legislatures, three new governors and then having to disrupt what we have as a state all our prison systems, our higher education systems," said political analyst Steven Maviglio. "I think diversity is what makes California great and this would actually ruin it."

If the measure were to make it on the ballot and be approved by voters it would also still need permission from Congress.

We don't need to divide California into 3 states.
We need to divide california into thousands and thousands of dirt particles flying across the world after bombing it with all our available nuclear firepower.

But you don't want to nuke all of California, just the parts that deserve it. That's why the three states plan is good: Separate it into the LA area, the SF area, and the rest of California stays as one state. Then you just nuke two little states, and you save both the good parts of California and a lot of useful bombs.

This proposal gives SF, LA, and SD effective control of their own states. The Dems would gain 4 US senators, and eastern California would still be underrepresented.

If this were about fair representation, there would be an East and West California, or the State of Jefferson which would carve out parts of southern Oregon and northern California above the bay area.

This proposal is democratic gerrymandering and the current Congress would never approve of it.

I like some of these ideas. One where we let them split up into a bunch of states and then somehow we can declare on the one with Los Angeles in it and nuke it, or somehow deliberately set off the San Andreas Fault to get rid of it. That one would rule.

Would breaking them into seperate states change the result of this?

Not sure where the 2016 map came from since it seems to combine a bunch of counties into one. The actual map looks like this.

Long story short: no it would not, unless you managed to make a state out of the red counties by themselves. Most of the red areas in California are sparsely populated. See that big bit of red up in the Northeastern part of the state? Those are counties like Modoc. Trump won Modoc with a total of 2,413 votes. That's like, what a quarter mile's worth of people in the Bay Area? The county below it is Lassen. Trump won with 7,574 votes. For comparison, the Northernmost blue county, Humboldt, Hillary won with 19,576 votes. I hate these fucking maps because a giant red area does not equal a giant amount of people. Nobody fucking lives in the desert or the mountains (even though at the rate things are going, I'd like to live in the mountains)

Even if you divided the state so the red areas were their own state, they still would not have as many electoral college votes as the blue areas.

Conservatives in California have only one thing to hope for: that the DNC implodes and fractures enough that all the splinters can't form a majority.

According to your map the disease is spreading, get out while you still can!

Their state "systems" mainly involve the horrible cities they have that everyone in the world outside those cities hates parasitizing the rest of the state (and actually anyone depending on the giant aquifers these fuckers are sucking dry to maintain their depraved and decadent lifestyles) and for that matter everyone outside the state who depends on the resources they vampirize.

Bill Hicks put it a lot better, though.

You know, if more socialists acted like you, instead of the whiny neo-liberal fucks they all seem to be nowadays, I'd happily embrace the philosophy.

Good. I just hope they can come up with names other than "[Direction] California".
I'm sure they can't.

It'd probably make things more efficient but all 3 of the proposed divisions have massive cities in them so the rural parts would still be neglected and generally poorly served.
That's the problem I see here.

All that happens is there'd be 2 more Dem governors and 4 more Dem senators. Also everyone would have to buy a new flag with 2 more stars on it.
Love to see the schools bitch over that one.

Can't do it. There's no way to fit two more stars on the flag without making it look like shit.

Unless, they were all to be arranged in an offensive shape.
Would make for good salt!

I agree with what you generally meant, And I get what you're seeing. But I think you're looking at it from a perspective that fits a narrative.

There are a few logistical way to break California up, but I think if you drew the lines in a clinical autistic way you'd see either two results. One red state and two purples, or one guaranteed red state, on guaranteed blue state, and one purple.

Or maybe instead, let's just elect a president that goads an insane foreign nationalist with atomic power into nuking the major cities least likely to re-elect I...

...Oh.

Well played Trump. This is how you got so rich. Well played.

Most intellectuals live in metropolitan areas and smart people trend blue.

As both an intellectual and a smart person ( :optimistic: ) who unsurprisingly trends blue, I have noted that intellectuals and smart people also tend to trend insane.

You can find smart people and dumb people in every subtle shade between right and left.

The ones one the extremes tend to be both absolutely insane and utterly brilliant.

I'm honestly not sure how to fix that. (coming from an admitted fence hopper)

Just secede you pussies.

I like California a little more after they made not telling your partner you have aids just a misdemeanor. So brave, wow... LGBTQ points.
