A plan to split California into three separate states has cleared its first hurdle. Supporters are set to begin collecting signatures to qualify for next year's ballot.

The plan is being funded by Bay Area tech billionaire Tim Draper, who previously funded a similar proposal back in 2014 to divide the state up into sections.

Draper argues that citizens would be better served by three smaller state governments, rather than one large one.

The three-way split goes like this: Northern California would include the Bay Area all the way to the Oregon border, Southern California would begin in Fresno and cover most of the southern state.

A new California would begin in Los Angeles county and cover most of the coastal areas.

Opponents say the plan would create chaos.

"Creating three new governments three new legislatures, three new governors and then having to disrupt what we have as a state all our prison systems, our higher education systems," said political analyst Steven Maviglio. "I think diversity is what makes California great and this would actually ruin it."

If the measure were to make it on the ballot and be approved by voters it would also still need permission from Congress.

The naysayers are just terrified about losing their fuck off huge 55 electoral college votes.

This probably won't happen, but California's state government is pure cancer at this point, in every branch.

The Six California plan has been around for decades. Dems will never give up those 55 delegates.

What? The electoral college assigns votes by population (house of representatives) plus two senators per state. They'd gain 4 EC votes under this plan, and more importantly: 4 senators.

Central and east California are surprisingly red though, and some of the San Diego/Orange County area. There's too much fear they'd fuck up and actually give the Republicans in the state a way to be heard.

It'd probably make things more efficient but all 3 of the proposed divisions have massive cities in them so the rural parts would still be neglected and generally poorly served.

All that happens is there'd be 2 more Dem governors and 4 more Dem senators. Also everyone would have to buy a new flag with 2 more stars on it.

The only divided California that would actually is if they made Jefferson - every other proposal is trash and wouldn't do anything. Except for LA and SF drifting off into the Pacific, that's not a bad proposal.

CA is about two thirds blue. If the spilt worked out a certain way they'd be gaining four but then losing twenty.

Why? Why do they want this? What will this accomplish? Do they realise how much this will fuck up many of their states systems? I guess California got so stupid that they have destroyed themselves, and I always thought Florida would be the one.
Because Californians are stupid and deserve all the hate if this gets enacted.

Would breaking them into seperate states change the result of this?

Their state "systems" mainly involve the horrible cities they have that everyone in the world outside those cities hates parasitizing the rest of the state (and actually anyone depending on the giant aquifers these fuckers are sucking dry to maintain their depraved and decadent lifestyles) and for that matter everyone outside the state who depends on the resources they vampirize.

Bill Hicks put it a lot better, though.

I don't see how, though. Gerrymandering is pretty easy, and the way red & blue votes are divided in the U.S. they'd just need to make sure the cities got put together with the proper amounts of rural area. Plus, two thirds is a strong margin, and the idea that they'd let the republicans all get pushed into one substate is ludicrous.

NO!

Much like New York state, the other two states would be RED. Do you realize not all of California is Los Angeles? At best, one of the split-off states would be red and the other purple, i.e. likely to swing one way or the other.

Depends on how they would break it.
I guess Democrats would prefer a split that makes the new states have exactly the same party support levels, so they can keep all three Californias to themselves.
But then, who'd stop Republicans from breaking up Texas?

This is one big ploy by flag manufacturers. Say no to Big Flag!
