A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.

But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

The link in there to Nish Kumar's Twitter reaction to the news is a wonderful mine of salt.
A few years back Kumar went mental on twitter at a club venue that spelled his name wrong on some promotional material. Eventually the guardian picked up on it, and went on to really hammer the club for ... racist whatever.

Someone told me at the time that Kumar was being an idiot, that if he ever needed to go back on the comedy circuit people weren't going to forget that he can turn into a complete cunt at the drop of a hat, and attack employers.

Here's Nish getting booed at a charity lunch (he was getting paid to do).

The Comedy circuit in the UK is a bit of a stitch up anyway, with a lot of young comics with good material forced into working shitty clubs and having their material stolen by more established figure. They all keep their heads down hoping for the chance to get a slot on HIGNFY or Mock the week.

They’re better off going on 8 out of 10 cats or task master.

Big respect to based Mancs. Don't stand for this shit being foisted upon your communities. And ignore police who say vandalism of this mural "won't be tolerated". Just keep doing it.
Protip for would be jet set radios: Make some stencils so you can quickly "drive by" floyd (just like he would have been if he hadn't overdosed ;_; RIP)

He wasn't paid for that performance.
Nish Kumar's attendance was arranged in good faith and he gave his time for free to support the charity and our work.

He also took it pretty well, all things considered.
Kumar said he was surprised by the reaction to his heckling. “I’m sort of amazed by how fascinated people are by the whole thing. It’s not the first time I’ve been booed off stage … I consider it, the life of being a comedian – they have a right to boo me.”

Make them related to local issues too. Small things that you feel the council should be paying attention to and spending money on.
I'd suggest leafleting with George's criminal record before the incident that led to his death near the mural. Header it "Police reform is always needed" then move on to "but this is memorial dedicated to a man who-"

Pretty good plan that. Especially as the Northern Quarter is full of leaflets so it likely wouldn't be noticed.

A Labour MP is stepping down in Hartlepool amid sexual harassment charges. In the 2019 election it went to Labour by less than 4000 votes and that same election saw 10000 votes go the Brexit party that'll need to be hoovered up. No clue about the candidate there yet but if Labour lose it I'll put money on the Labour Progressives holding it up as proof that Kier's methods are not the way forwards and they should double down even more on behaviour that cost them seats previously.

In contrast if they win depending on the candidate fielded that could also result in a push towards one side or another in their internal politics. Either ways good times.

Now that everyone hates the police the anti-lockdown protests are left wing now.

I can't keep up with all this flip flopping.

(Old school lefties like Piers Corbyn have been protesting and getting arrested all along but this is clearly new for the young London crowd)
All those different colours and creeds marching united. White, Black, Muslim and Asians. Can’t exactly twist this to be some far right fringe thing.

It seems to be like the anti Iraq war protests where everyone came out with their pet cause.

Some BLM type.

Random Scottish heraldic flag, so maybe Scottish independence? Probably not if they're living in London.

I can't find any Socialist Worker signs (they're usually at every protest) but they've been pushing protests all week.

Meanwhile, half of Twitter is still in their bubble posting gotchas about "covidiots" and "institutional sexism", failing to see the big picture that various groups have united against the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill.
