A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.

But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

"We need to do something about our WHORE DAUGHTERS getting raped every time we turn our heads!"
"Maybe we should punish the rapists instead of punishing the girls who are raped?"
"Blasphemer!! Kill his heretic!! Also get me some hot rocks, I need to try and smush these titties out!"

I was going to go on some rant about a developed western country not having laws in place to criminalize burning kids to the point of deforming them. But then I remembered we're dealing with the British. Chances are, a law doing so wouldn't make a difference because the police wouldn't be able to enforce it without offending any Muslims.
What's a worse crime? This breast ironing shit? Or when white people call it out on twitter? The bobbies know the clear answer.

It’s not only an issue of funding, it is also an issue of political will to tackle something that historically has been accepted as a cultural practice,” said Conservative MP Maria Miller, who also chairs the women’s and equalities select committee in parliament.
“The British people are so polite in the sense that when they see something like that, they think of cultural sensitivities,” she said. “But if it’s a cultural practice that is harming children … any harm that is done to a little girl, whether in public or in secrecy, that person should be held accountable.”
>muh cultural practices
>muh cultural sensitivities

My former high school teacher was a staunch multiculturalist, and held that criticism of any culture was opinion and not fact, but she also believed that if you went to any specific nation, you had to respect its culture.

This isn't respecting British culture.

This isn't even respecting any culture.

This is just an abomination.

And it is mental retardation for the British to refrain from prosecution of this practice for fear of being called racists.

Oh dear god, something sensible finally happened:

It's being touted as "The Malthouse Compromise" and has both Remainers and Leavers slightly peeved they've had to do it. But then my gut says this is actually closer to a proper, sensible Brexit (on the basis everyone is slightly unhappy).

It mostly pushes a Plan C, so the Chequers concept is still to be offered up and negotiated long term. GATT-24 WTO standstill on trade, so ten years in which the UK and EU will not erect any new checks or other changes in tariff regimes between each other while a new FTA is negotiated.

So the key individuals to have pushed this was MP Kit Malthouse, who managed to bring together the ERG and a number of hardline remainers, Nicky Morgan among them. People who have signed up to this include JRM and Steven Baker, meaning this effectively has the backing of the ERG which is nearly 100 strong on the Tory side, and key to knocking out the WA last time around.

Shame the EU have already said Nein to it.

This fucking cultures are immune from criticism idea is such bullshit. Why is it child abuse if one guy imprisons his 5 daughters in a shack in the midwest, but it's something we must not judge if it happens somewhere else. We know when we were children we didn't want to be imprisoned!

Kids don't choose to be born into any given culture. They should be protected, I don't care if it offends child abusers.

I had to take a closer look at that article. Let's just say I'm not surprised.

Of course little has been done. Some of those Africans could also be Muslims. We can't offend Muslims.

It's horrifying that a mother was let go with caution after burning her daughter's chest with a stone.

You'd think that feminists would be all over this. But then again it's POCs. And it's the UK so the authorities aren't going to do anything anyway.

In western countries we don't iron girls breasts. Go back to Africa if you can't integrate properly.

it has nothing to do with quality, it's about preserving local industry.
removing trade restrictions and tariffs would leave most of european agriculture bankrupt within a year or two, while making the continent entirely dependent on foreign imports for survival. this is obviously a situation you want to avoid at all costs, which is why they're so big on agriculture protectionism.

It has to do with quality. The EU bans certain food additives and preservatives that are used in everyday foods processed in America. This has always been a major barrier between the US and the EU during trade talks in the past.

There is also a difference in Chicken eggs in the US they have to be mass washed and in the EU the Chickens have to be vaccinated against salmonella or whatever in the eggs and neither allows the other method. (last I saw anyway.)

Thank your bureaucratic Gods you're free of chemicals with scary sounding names that now you'll never even need to learn.
