A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.


But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

My prediction is he will last til Friday. There is too much blood in the water now, and the sharks have been hungry for him for months. When you stay in power purely for spite (which he is), your position for what is best for the nation is redundant.

Guido has a list of those who have not shown their support, and there is one interesting name there, Starmer's best friend Richard Hermer. He is on account for being Starmer's Grima Wormtongue and being in meetings where he is not needed, citing "human rights" etc. He has been branded as "annoying" and "constantly present". I find it very telling that your number 2 has scarpered. Only the prominent members of the cabinet have not backed him: Madmood, Streeting, Miliband, Reynalds (both). Powell is very quiet, too.

It is going to be like Boris's cabinet again.

Well, all cabinet ministers have come out in support now for Starmer, funnily enough, just after Guido published their list. Labour and its ministers have effectively signed the party's death warrant. You are now known as the party of pedophiles, insider trading, and communists. On top of that, a lot of the unions have already started to pool their money in Reform, meaning purse strings will tighten even more.

I am legitimately disgusted that no one stood up after it was revealed that Peter Mandelson has been essentially running the party for 2 decades in the shadows. To no benefit whatsoever except his own, and made Labour even more shit. Not only this, you are backing someone who has not condemned treasonous actions, that have effected the party. I would not even be surprised if Mandelson is involved in Gordon Brown selling our gold reserves. These people make the Tories look saintly in comparison.

Sorry for venting, but you keep your position after basically greenlighting treason. But Boris Johnson has a fucking closed-off party for his birthday of only ministers, and he is satan. You aren't fucking sorry, you're sorry you got caught out after Blair told you to put him in first position. Karen Pierce was already in place and liked by both US administrations. Fuck Trump liked her and knew her by first name basis. Thefact this fucker is trying to sink the rape gang enquiry speaks volumes. I am embarrassed for our country; this scandal is pretty big in terms of size, as it includes the royals, too. Also, Charles has been quiet since his mate Ali was on the list.

An "Angela for Leader" website briefly went live on 27 January amid speculation Angela Rayner will run in a Labour leadership contest. The domain was registered with the same company as her official parliamentary site. It was found by an IT specialist who gave the information to the Guardian. Her allies deny it has any connection to Rayner "This is a crass false-flag operation, obviously designed to undermine Angela"

@Heinrich Maneuver The TUC chief Paul Nowak acknowledged in late 2025 that a "significant number" of trade union members are backing Reform UK, driven by disillusionment with the Labour government's failure to deliver rapid change.

It's more the rank and file members backing Reform UK than the overall Unions (as Reform UK is against the Employment Rights Bill) although ASLEF and the RMT have held talks with Reform UK and those have actually gone a lot better than expected.

I feel sorry for Prince William who has shared his concerns over what has happened - our future King needs all this to go before he ascends the throne and if his dad is not willing to cut Andrew out of the equation then that responsibility will have to pass to him.

Sarwar's split ranks and the Corbynites will probably start to withdraw their support over the next few weeks (John McDonnell is said to be considering resigning as a Labour MP and standing as an Independent as well as Graham Stringer, Clive Lewis, Richard Burgon, Dawn Butler, Marsha de Cordova and Barry Gardiner) and depending on how much worse it gets a collapse of Government cannot be ruled out. The main problem is that IF Starmer stays on he can threaten his MP's with an early GE to keep them in line.

Some Labour MP's are apparently even thinking of quitting Labour and joining a new Socialist party (a bit like how some Labour and Tory MP's joined Change UK). Just how many leave Labour remains to be seen, but MP's know that if Labour get below 326 they are in grave peril of being a minority.

IF something like 'Starmer fucks kids' comes along as a story then yes I'd say that would nuke Labour from orbit permanently as no Labour MP could ever defend that.
