A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.


But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

My dad was looking into HMOs a while back, after suffering an attack of social conscience (he likes to help people), but he went off the idea when he saw the hoops you have to jump through to get them built and how much time and effort you'd be spending repairing them between tenants. The only way they can become reasonably profitable is if you become a literal slum lord over dozens of properties.

So of course jeets own most of them, as they have the lack of conscience required to cram thirty people into a two-bed terrace and lie about it to your face. The rest are owned by fat guys called Tone, who have a beemer, a crappy transit van, and a gang of polish handymen who pretend to fix things.

It’s no fun trying to run a business with neoliberals in control. In California, shoplifting has been effectively legalized. In NYC, crime itself is virtually legal thanks to bail reform, resulting in store shelves stripped bare. In formerly great Britain, the government even tells business owners not to shame shoplifters by posting their pictures:

Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) has issued advice warning that it “may not be appropriate” to post pictures of shoplifters, the Times of London reported.

Shop owners are forced to resort to such tactics in desperation, because British police refuse to enforce the law, preferring to devote themselves to harassing social media thought criminals.

According to the data watchdog, it would be “appropriate” for businesses to forward information to police or to share a suspect’s identity with managers of fellow shop owners.

They especially don’t want people hurting thieves’ feelings by publicly posting pictures of them.

The ICO stated that posting pictures in staff rooms or sharing them with other businesses would also be wrong.

For shop employees to be on guard against habitual shoplifters might crimp their lifestyle.

The advice comes in the wake of police demanding that a vintage clothes shop owner in Wales take down a sign describing shoplifters as “scum” as it might be taken as “provocative and offensive”.

There's a lot of pageantry involved in halal slaughter that's just as important as the actual animal itself (i. e. you can have haram chicken breasts) that a lot of people consider cruel and unnecessary. You'd be surprised how much pre-packaged or fast food is halal because its simply a larger net for the retailer. Supermarkets and that usually have a little section for raw halal meat so you're unlikely to buy it by accident. Next time you're in the frozen section of the shops go and take a peek at the microwave meals or whatever and see how many have a halal symbol on the back.

Halal butchers are also visa-mills and I frankly do not trust them to slaughter hygienically. Shit like campylobacter and other foodborne pathogens come from cross-contaminant more often than they do the animal itself, if they're completely exsanguinating an animal and splashing its blood all over the place you're massively upping that risk.

Mmm, I still think it would be far cheaper to build a large wall around it and pay for the guards and maybe even have food airdropped in in the form of basic survival MREs, paying a 5 man squad of 24/7 armed guards has to be far cheaper than however much the government is wasting on the hotels.

A wall is expensive, takes time and implies the expectation of permanent use. You can have fences up to demarcate the boundary very quickly and if our state is willing to ankle-tag petty British criminals, I presume they should be able to do so for illegal immigrants. You might say that it's easier to get through a fence but unless a wall is some ridiculously high and expensive and even more permanent prison style thing, it's pretty easy to get over that too.

Completely true: I met a woman who told me she was Muslim - White, British accent, converted - who refused to eat meat unless it was halal. She did not know what halal was but told me "animals are treated better under halal. It's about respect and better welfare". I said that's not what 'halal' meant and asked if she'd like to know what the actual criteria were. She told me that she didn't want to.

Totally true. She also said that the Koran is "open to different interpretations". Hadith says 'what?'

I believe the same argument could be made against housing then this way as was made against housing then in hotels. Might be harder to pursue, given the more spread out nature, but if the precedent can be set, it'll force the government to either capitulate, break the law, or openly declare the entire country an asylum centre.
