A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.


But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

If a fraction of the money and effort that has been spent on foreign interests was directed to things people actually want like functioning hospitals, there probably wouldn't be as many things to complain about.

@Bog-standard Poster all trusts now have ‘targets’ for c sections to be low and so will refuse them any time they can. Not based on clinical need, oh no, based on cost, and worse - ideology. Your c section rate should be the number of women who require c section not some arbitrary number a bean counter or worse a zealot thinks it should be. So women in blocked labour are refused again and again until things turn really bad and then it’s a crash section and high risk. This is the root cause of many maternal and baby deaths and severe injuries. Some births go wrong. You can have five babies and four be easy as and the last one be just the wrong position on the day and bang, it’s blue light time. A huge amount of birth is how the baby is positioned, and if it’s borked, it’s gonna hurt at minimum and be disastrous at worst.
Of course we shouldn’t be encouraging everyone to have a section (I have no idea why anyone would pick one facing a normal birth anyway, I felt like I’d been run over after mine, but whatever) but ‘my body my choice’ seems to fall down spectacularly in this case. NHS maternity services are not fit for purpose. I have attended more caring and competent births of livestock.

The UK has a serious problem with subcontracting. This issue is endemic to the UK economy as a whole and not isolated to the healthcare sector. Giant corporations like Serco are bidding on large contracts and subcontracting them out multiple times over, meaning there is little oversight on the performance of these sub-subcontractors. This creates issues relating to the performance of the work, but also in relation to liability, as the lowest rung of the subcontractors are responsible. This also has the effect of reducing margins for smaller companies, who are at the lowest level, as they have to give cuts to several companies above them. The government ought to seriously reconsider the contracts given out and include no subcontracting provisions.

Re the subcontracting here's something fucking terrifying for you: food distribution and logistics is basically run by a monopoly of about 5 companies. Each has a huge share of the market but if one fails then the others don't have the capacity to pick up the slack of the failed entity.

It's fucking terrifying how big a share of things they all have and that the supermarkets cannot be fucking bothered to do their own logistics warehousing and storage.

Seriously I can't stress this enough: have a store of non perishable food, hygiene supplies,meds and water in your home. I don't care if you've no space, I don't care if it's a hassle. At one point one of these companies will fail and when they do, the food supply chain will go tits up for a time and it will be a long while before it can be put right.

Could you imagine them trying to round up gen z to go fight for them? Gen Z have been the most beat down and plainly screwed over by the system at the moment and now some dip shit in an ill fitting suit wants to send them off to a country which they wouldn't even be able to place on a map to go die in some ditch.

I think if it was the scenario of, Russian troops have landed on our shores we must stop them, then sure people might fight then. But they'd have to lock down the airports/seaports first since I guarantee 90% of men in prime fighting age would be looking to get the first plane off this island if conscription was a serious prospect.

I do agree, but look at the salaries for Army roles for instance. You either have to be really dedicated to joining or just have no other options left to you. If we were really serious we would start by making it a worthwhile option to join the army in the first place.
