A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.


But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

The last US president to freeze out the UK was JFK when we were looking to update of Nuclear capability from land to air based systems (which failed after millions spent). So it would be quite nice to see our news scramble on about how NATO is totally falling apart and how the world will end because of it.

They are the ones who will accept nothing less than Full Communism Now, and decry any step towards that (even big ones) that isn't Full Communism Now as a "betrayal", "working with the enemy", or of course "Fascism". You look at these people and wonder what would make them happy. They didn't want Bernie because he was a Democrat and didn't support Full Communism Now. Most of them don't even support the Communist Party of the USA because they don't support total world revolution, immediately. Even other Communists want to shake them by the shoulders and yell at them that maybe increasing support for Communism might be a good idea, give people Socialism and redistribution and racial equity and they'll see how good that is and it will garner more support for more radical change. Those people are then called "Fascists" because they work with the "enemy" or they once retweeted an edgy joke in 2011. They are presumably happy to let America get taken over by Trump and billionaires and hyper-capitalism because those are effectively the same thing as Democratic Socialism because they're all just different kinds of "Fascism" anyway. By holding out dogmatically for 100% of what they want, they end up with 0% of what they want, and they don't care because they have remained ideologically pure, and that matters to them more than anything. It's a solipsistic, narcissistic worldview that expresses no care for suffering or the harm being done to America, the purity of their soul is what matters.

Like your 'it's as good as we're going to get, so like it or lump it' attitude?

Nothing wrong with wanting the leader of a country to have a deep, long abiding, connection to that country.

You experiencing furious anger at people who want more than you personally think is possible, rather than directing your rage at the people actively destroying the UK, seems a bit misdirected. I hope you're investing as much energy into those destructive forces as you are to those who want to construct, but in a different direction than you might like.

We both know that there are thousands upon thousands of problems afflicting this country, exactly none of which are resolved by refusing to do anything until the perfect policy platform is proposed by someone you consider sufficiently pure of thought and ancestry.

The complaints about Bogoff's true national allegiance do come up occasionally but it's always from intellectually dishonest leftoids/salty backstabbed oilgarchs who'd never say the same thing about other sorts of expats surprise surprise.

Does anyone know where to get a good fucking roast beef in this country? All the supermarkets are selling grisly crap that's been rolled to disguise it. Even Marks and Sparks are doing it.
I've got a bint who's always complaining about it even though she just keeps buying the crap anyway.

My point is hypocrisy. Vaughan Gethingv gets installed as Welsh Minister and people here can't wait to cry blood and soil but Boris Johnson being American is met without silence by the most vocal posters here.

Be consistent is all I ask for.
