A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.


But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

We all make mistakes chief. You spotted it was wrong and corrected the post, making you more honest than 90% of the average journalists and 95% of politicians. I just happened to land on the thread in the 2 minute window where I saw it and it was removed.

There's not really any blood in the photos but if the head was getting, er, moved around, that would make sense.

It might be some rando photo though. The internet doesn't exactly lack for shots of headless old guys. I imagine in order to quell the undesirable Saturday night panic, it will be confirmed as a suspected accident sooner rather than later. There's no sign of the bus on the scene currently though?

ETA: if the current rumour, that he was deid already and the body was just dumped rather than the bus killing him when it took his heid aff, is true, this has to be literally the worst attempt to dispose of a body in decades of Scottish criminal justice hilarity. The Cowgate. On a Saturday night.

Lots of news for Edinburgh but no severed head pics. Of course given the recent news there...

A teenager has pleaded guilty to murdering a woman by repeatedly stabbing her in broad daylight on an Edinburgh street.
The 17-year-old boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, killed Danielle Davidson in Constitution Street in Leith on 18 May 2023.
The masked teenager made threats to the 33-year-old victim before repeatedly stabbing her on the head and body with a knife and fleeing to a nearby supermarket to change his clothes.
He had lodged a special defence of self-defence at the High Court in Glasgow but pled guilty after CCTV footage of the murder was played to the jury at the beginning of the trial.
Iain McSporran KC, defending, told the trial that after speaking to the boy "he acknowledges there was no prospect of self-defence which could be put forward".
The footage showed the boy and another person - both dressed in black - on electric scooters on Duke Street around 19:45 when they encountered Ms Davidson and a man named Conlan Carr walking in the other direction.
An altercation then ensued that also involved the boy's father, who had been drinking in a nearby pub with another man, Steven Warns.
Footage showed the boy’s father, Mr Warns, Mr Carr - who was holding a knife - and Ms Davidson having a discussion.
The boy then appeared and also produced a knife, while his electric scooter was seen to be pulled from the ground and dropped by Mr Carr and Ms Davidson.
He then approached Ms Davidson, stabbed her several times and punched her.
She was rushed to hospital with serious injuries but later died.
The boy was captured on camera going into the women's toilets in a supermarket before remerging, having changed his clothes.
A full narrative of the facts will be heard on Monday and Judge Lord Arthurson remanded the boy in custody meantime.

Am I going insane? Why are people on this platform suddenly rushing to defend Kemi Badenoch? Yeah sure she's not another faggot Etonite, but guess what? She has the support of said faggot Etonites, she's literally a part of the Faggot Etonite Party and her primary argument is that the left are the real racists because she is le based black woman. (Cleverly is already using this as an argument to bludgeon Labour with even!) I don't care what red meat she throws out for civic nationalist boomers, if you actually take a look at her track record for one moment you'll realise she's just as awful as the rest of them. There is no hope for the Tory party and if you believe otherwise, you are part of the problem, is it that simple, they will never have your interests in mind and neither will Labour.

With all of that being said however, I'm actually happy she's won. Jenrick (believe him or not, I personally don't) was promising to outflank Reform on migration, thus perhaps giving the Tory party a second wind after this latest election. The last thing we need is a split in the right, do I believe Reform will be much better? No, but it's a start, and maybe, just maybe, a secondary party becoming the official opposition or perhaps even the ruling party can galvanise some of the more apathetic voters. Kemi, meanwhile will probably not manage to outflank Reform, her policies would only ensure the status quo would remain.
