A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.

But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

I am telling you now we are going to an Irish troubles 2.0, that is horrifying. The small Irish communities are very private and they tend to keep to themselves so forcing this shit on them is just horrible, you are just stoking ex IRA at this point and those fuckers are brutal.

You're out numbered by violent strangers. You know they're a danger and you have to protect yourself so what the fuck choice do you have but to turn extremely violent and make them flee immediately?
I think they're going to try and vote away the problem, but at this rate, the UK will be an Islamic state before then. They're fucked in 30 years anyways. The muslims have 5+ kids while the British have 1-2. 2nd generation immigrants will outnumber the British and all of them will vote. Not that they really need to since the government is already working on their behalf.

Fuck off with this gun autism. It's a boring talking point that's been beaten to death and proven to be a retarded idea. Guns don't prevent violence, they prevent protest.

Someone has dumped cyanide into a canal in Walsall, Birmingham.

Public health bosses say they hope to start reducing restrictions “very quickly” on a 12-mile stretch of canals in the West Midlands following a toxic chemical spillage.
Sodium cyanide, which can cause seizures, vomiting and loss of consciousness, was confirmed on Tuesday as the chemical spilled into the waterway in Walsall.
People have been urged not to go near a long section of the canal network and towpaths from the middle of the borough to Birmingham and including connected waterways in Wednesbury, Tipton and West Bromwich.
The authority's interim director of public health, Nadia Inglis, said they were “doing things cautiously but as quickly as we can".

Wildlife experts said the spillage's impact would be devastating and a regular user of the canal said they were angry.
On Tuesday, council leader Garry Perry said it was too early to speculate how the substance entered the waterway but promised regular updates as a major incident was declared.

"We’re testing all points of that affected area currently and we’ll be reviewing those results as they come through," Dr Inglis added.
"We’ll be removing those restrictions and hopefully reducing the size of that potentially affected area where we are confident there isn’t a risk to health."
The exclusion zone markers run from the Walsall lock flight to lock flights at Rushall/Ryders Green in the borough and Perry Barr in Birmingham.

People were still being urged to avoid a 12-mile stretch of the canal network on Wednesday morning following the spill

Sodium cyanide dissolves in water and can have serious adverse health effects if people or pets come into direct contact with it, the council advised.
Anyone exposed to the water who felt unwell should seek medical advice through the NHS 111 service or phone 999 in an emergency, a spokesperson for the authority added.
People living on boats on the canal in the affected area were being made aware of the spill, the Canal and River Trust said.
Dr Inglis added: “Our primary aim has been to keep the public safe and to protect their health and wellbeing.
"Given the nature of the substance, we’re taking a cautious approach to protecting our public until we know it’s safe to open those canal towpaths again.”

Walsall Council leader Garry Perry said on Tuesday it was too early to speculate on how the cyanide got into the canal

What is sodium cyanide?

  • The chemical sodium cyanide is a white crystal-like solid with a faint almond odour
  • It is used in industry for metal cleaning, plating and extraction
  • When cyanide salts are swallowed they release cyanide in the body - they can also be absorbed through the skin
  • Expose can cause symptoms including headaches, nausea, dizziness, loss of consciousness, seizures and vomiting
  • It can be rapidly fatal if inhaled or ingested as it interferes with the body's ability to use oxygen

Dr Delia Garratt, chief executive of Birmingham and Black Country Wildlife Trust said the spillage would have a devastating impact on wildlife.
She added she hoped those responsible would face the full force of the law.
"Environmental watchdogs must be empowered and sufficiently resourced to ensure they can monitor and inspect polluters, and enforce penalties upon those who break the law," she said.

The original article I saw this morning said that the cyanide is used in industrial process to clean machines and "plates" (I'm assuming they mean press-plates or those used in circuit board cutting). But this detail has since been scrubbed.

news is reporting that they've found the source, but the council is refusing to say what it is.

e: There's a shit-ton of industrial units all up and down the canals there. I can see a couple of potential culprits.

Cashmore's Metals stands out. It likely uses sodium cyanide for cleaning and preparing metal sheets. Hill Steel might use it. There's also a sewage plant near Stone Cross, though I don't know if they'd use it, and a paint manufacturer off the A41 near golds hill. All speculation, obviously.

The source of a toxic chemical spillage affecting a 12-mile stretch of canals in the West Midlands has been identified.

The Environment Agency (EA) said the sodium cyanide that spilled into the Walsall waterway on Tuesday came from Anochrome Ltd, a firm which deals in surface coatings and sealing.

Pretty bad how literal cyanide can be just dumped into the water. It's a big of a whoopsie daisy.

All I can think of is that some wagie was moving the barrels of chemical on the Fork-lift, it slipped off of the barrel grabbers, hit the floor and spilled everywhere. The evac protocol (I assume) is to leave the area and if their drain-bungs were damaged, or more likely, not fit, then the run off could have gone down the clean/surface run-off drain and into the canal.

IF that's the case, the company should have sounded the alarm at the first instance.
