A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.


But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

I think the odds of something like this happening on any given day is pretty high, and the timing just happens to be serendipitous for the government narrative. What I do think, however, is that due to the nature of the event and the serendipitous timing, the media is taking an event that would otherwise be back page police blotter and turning it into a front page national story.

Very few. The only one I can remember offhand was one I personally saw, which was a stabbing from a recent care in the community releasee. Floridly psychotic.

I was expecting that when seeing the name too. That would have been very sneaky of them...

ETA.
The news yesterday was focusing on the killings (the perp got "manslaughter") of two students and a caretaker, where the perp was very obviously medical history mentally unwell. His victims and he were failed by our shitty mental health care.

I'm betting between the more recent incidents, there will be more talk about how shit mental health care is here and then nothing will be done to improve it let alone to protect against people who genuinely pose a danger to themselves and others.

Man, 26, sentenced for stirring up racial hatred

A 26-year-old man has been sentenced to three years and two months in prison after he pleaded guilty to publishing written material to stir up racial hatred.
Tyler James Kay, previously of Ellfield Court, Northampton, admitted to publishing the inflammatory posts on social media on August 7, during a period of unrest across the country.

In his police interview, Kay accepted that others could have been influenced by the language used but stated that he copied and pasted part of one post from another account in order to show that “an average 'Joe Bloggs' like me would not be arrested for it.”

After pleading guilty to the offence at Northampton Magistrates’ Court yesterday (August 8), Kay appeared before Her Honour Judge Adrienne Lucking at Northampton Crown Court today (August 9).

In court, Kay gave evidence before the Judge, denying that he intended to stir up racial hatred but admitting that “in hindsight” some of his posts “made me look like an idiot”. He also referenced the “high amount of misinformation online”, stating “I didn’t know what to believe.”

After stating that she was “completely sure that he knew racial hatred would be stirred up” as a result of his “utterly repulsive, racist and shocking posts that have no place in civilised society, including on social media”, HH Judge Lucking sentenced Kay to three years and two months in prison.

Detective Chief Superintendent Rich Tompkins said: “I hope this case sends a very clear message to people who think they can hide behind a screen and publish hateful, racially prejudiced posts without consequence.

“This case is not an example of preventing ‘freedom of speech’ as a small minority of people will claim.

“It is about standing up for what is right and protecting our communities from fear of violence. After all, freedom of speech is not freedom to spread racial hatred.

“This week, we have had some really positive engagements with communities across the county, most notably the gathering of people standing against racism in Northampton on Wednesday evening.

"We stand with our communities and will do everything we can to help them feel safe and protected from crime.”

Am I reading this right? He posted on August 7 and was convicted on August 9?
 
So there are political rumblings already, looks like Sue Grey is a real power hungry bitch and pissing off cabinet members. She is chief of staff and dictating to cabinet members where to go and even placing their desks. She is even taking intelligence meetings and passing them over to Starmer. Starmer is also attending daily Cobra meetings too, totally not suss. I cannot see him lasting til Christmas, we are barely just over a month in and there are these kind of scandals already, and Sue has been trying to distance people from Angela meaning power moves are in play. It was obvious though, he got what 20% of the vote overall, his sway of power is going to be a leaf in a hurricane.

Have you ever met a single person the mental health system helped? Not locked up for a weekend, but actively helped and improved their quality of life? I have not. Everyone is told "get some fresh air" and medicated into a zombie by their GP if they're dumb enough to ask for it.

I have said this in the Summer 2024 thread, but it used to be illegal to be homeless as an immigrant until fairly recently (https://www.theguardian.com/housing...bonfire-legal-protection-homeless-eu-migrants). Not anymore.
The illegal status depends on when he came to the UK (before/after Brexit), if he registered as "Settled", etc..

All immigrants (even white ones, but to a lesser degree) have higher rates of schizophrenia. My theory is that being an immigrant is alienating to some degree, and it is something that is present every day of your life. Imagine not even knowing the local language!
Therapy and medication cannot even treat basic anxiety and depression, there is nothing you can do with someone who is psychotic. It is not the fault of the "system", but of psychiatry/psychology. Only a very tiny minority improves

It is. It is in part why we are seeing all these problems with children of immigrants. Their parents are teaching them culture and history that isn’t the same as what they are seeing out their front door. It’s a strange experience to juggle.

And is what the radicalizers use to get them so frequently.
