A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.

But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

I'm surprised there isn't a "Thompson/Venables is dead" rumour launched every week on Facebook. The masses love getting worked up about paedos. (See also: Huntley, Watkins).
That's because from what I vaguely remember Thompson has indeed thanked the universe for his second chance and has kept his nose squeakily clean. Apparently Jamie Bulger's mom caught up to him one time and well... you can't ever really forgive someone for something like that, but she seems to be willing to let him live his life,

The supply crisis escalates beyond all tolerable levels;

A warning has been issued to anyone who purchases Quality Street at Christmas.

Quality Street is made by manufacturer Nestle. And, unfortunately, Nestle says it is experiencing supply issues.

This means there is a chance the UK may run out of Quality Street this Christmas.

They are rivalled by the likes of Cadbury Heroes, Cadbury Milk Tray, Cadbury Roses and tins of Celebrations.

Mark Schneider, the chief executive of Nestle, warned: "Like other businesses, we are seeing some labour shortages and some transportation issues but it's our UK team's top priority to work constructively with retailers to supply them.”

A spokesperson for the company said: "We are working hard to mitigate those issues and are not seeing a material impact on supply.

"Our factory in Halifax manufactures up to 12 million Quality Street sweets every day and there will be plenty to go around this Christmas."

Nestle also makes Lion bars, Aero and KitKat.

Britain's biggest grocer Tesco said it was confident of good product availability for Christmas but there could still be "bumps in the road" amid supply chain challenges affecting the sector.

Tesco praised the "resilience of our supply chain" as it said it has already hired about 15,000 extra temporary staff as part of preparations for Christmas.

A Sainsbury's attempted to change its petrol station's opening hours (to 10pm to 6am) to help with traffic issues. Unfortunately this was discriminatory against women.

Supermarket giant Sainsbury's has come under fire with women over its petrol station opening hours - which have been branded 'unsafe'.

Customer Deborah Sampson said the petrol station in Larkfield, Kent, started to sell fuel at 10pm, not 6am as usual.

Sampson, 53, said this made fuel harder to get for women in the area unless they go out at night - which many may feel unsafe doing alone.

Speaking to The Sun , Sampson said the petrol station told her the move was to help manage footfall.

She said: "I am a single mum, and a carer to my mum, so I spend a lot of the time juggling everything.

“Obviously I am prepared to queue like everyone else to get my fuel, but when I noticed they had changed the opening times I was incensed.

“I just feel that it is discriminating [to] me as a single parent, a mother, a woman in the current climate where women don’t feel safe.

“They expect me to go out, leave my child at home, in the dark at night to just be able to purchase some petrol."

A Sainsbury's spokesperson told the Mirror : “The opening hours at our Larkfield petrol filling station temporarily changed for a few days to ease traffic in the area.

"We’re sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused we are now open again a usual, which is from 6am – 10pm.”

BT are launching a tracking service for women walking home:

Cue the typical "this is victim blaming" shit.

But a lot of fitness apps already has features like this. Garmin, Strava, etc. I know guys who use it all the time (usually due to nagging wives).

Cue them trying to pass laws that require all women to be tracked at all times to prevent them from stealing BT's shitty sport channels.
The bill will be well recieved throughout the entire chain of command but will awkwardly hang around as they fail to implement it due to BT's shitty internet services.

Brighton bin strike: Rubbish piles up as dispute enters second week

After a week of bin strikes rubbish has piled up to the point of blocking pavements and other paths
Piles of rubbish are blocking pavements as a bin strike in Brighton enters its second week.
Bin bags have been piled high and are spilling over pathways, and residents have reported horrendous smells across Brighton and Hove due to the pile-up.
The strike could last until mid-November after talks between the GMB union and Green-led council broke down.
The GMB called the action over changes of duties, drivers being removed from long-standing rounds and pay.
They announced a three day pause of the industrial action would come into force on 18 October.
Residents have reported a bad smell across Brighton and Hove
One angry resident told the BBC of being able to "smell the rubbish before you can see it".
With the build-up increasing the council is urging people to triple bag their waste before putting it out and people living in areas with communal bins are being urged to keep their rubbish at home where possible.
Jamie Lloyd, deputy chair of Brighton & Hove City Council's environment, transport and sustainability committee, apologised for the build-up of waste caused by the ongoing dispute.
He said: "It's an appalling situation and we are dedicated to getting this sorted out as quickly as possible."
However, he claimed the demands of the union would lead to "catastrophic cuts in other services".
The Green-led council apologised and said they want to end the dispute as quickly as possible
He added it was time to start thinking about emergency clearance efforts but said the council did not want to appear "antagonistic" to the union by bringing in outside contractors.
Government legislation forbids the use of agency workers to replace striking staff.
The council on Monday accused the union of walking out of a meeting where a "significant" offer had been made before hearing all the details.
Union bosses denied the claims, and said they walked out of negotiations because the proposal was less than previously offered.

The GMB union say the council has made a worse offer than previously proposed and strikes could last until November.

Thanks Covid.

Sorry to hear you fucked your life up? I know it's the done-thing that you're supposed to feel bad for single parents, but I honestly truly couldn't give a fuck. Unless your partner died in some freak accident, everything about your current situation is on you.

Weirdly I can have a degree of empathy for her. It's also messed up for the elderly and other vulnerable people to be only able to get petrol there between 10pm and 6am. However claiming it's discriminatory is nonsense, it's massively inconvenient is what it is, for everyone affected. But that's how it goes, sometimes inconvenience happens. The vast majority of people recognise that and work with it.
