A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.


But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

Love that they literally walked away from this and were caught by a foot pursuit. No notion that they were going to have the police actually chasing them, they normally don't for this sort of thing in Manchester.
No doubt Andy Burnham is in for a bit of mockery for the state of his town.
I've had people try to lamp me with a traffic cone before, weirdly the group makeup was similar. Small group of lads, one of whom hurled the cone then hid behind the few girls they were with at which point the mob walked off swiftly. I'd put money this was piss heads rather than disgruntled Labour voters that recognised him but then again it's hard to say these days.

If not for the fact that that part of Manchester is absolutely fucking swarming with pigs at the moment I doubt they'd have chased them, regardless of who got hit.

It's Manchester so them being both a pisshead and disgrintled labour voter is entirely plausible.

A child murderer (an actual child, mind) who tortured a baby to death, had his attorney convince the court to go easy on punishment and give him perennial identity coverage for life, which he has abused by being a kid diddler all of his adult life, running to the courts whenever his lifestyle gets a hate mob after him. He's the single biggest reason the UK has zero reason to mock the US justice system given what a mockery he's made of theirs.

You neglected to note he was 10 years old at the time he and Robert Thompson murdered the 2 year old. I know you inferred it but it helps to be really clear.

John Major did get a quote out of it that frankly exemplifies a lot of the content on Kiwi Farms. "Society needs to condemn a little more, and understand a little less."

I find myself doubting it because he also claims he was sentenced to 20 months then had it extended by 2 years during Covid. And because he's a reporter for the Star and for some reason he's the one the MOJ trusted with the truth.

That murder was absolute, pure evil, and even if you buy that he should have been given a new identity and let go (which I do not), the instant he re-offended it should have been curtains for him forever. Instead, this murderer got out over and over, with the cucked government giving him new identities and endangering the public, because apparently sadistic baby murdering pedophiles are more important to them than law abiding citizens.

It's an emotive one for people because it requires believing 10 year old children have the capacity for evil. But the description of what they did to the toddler combined with the fact that this was a planned set of actions not some spontaneous stupidity makes it hard to believe they were not fully aware of what they were doing.

I'm torn about the decision to hide their identities. We identify adults who do that sort of thing but by and large these sort of twisted crimes are not so widely publicised and in such detail. Hell a bunch of teenagers have beaten pensioners to death in recent years and I'd wager most people in the UK could not name a single one, victim or killer. But there's very few who do not know about Jamie Bulger and his killers and they were named despite their age.

The fact that Venables repeatedly pursues child abuse imagery and appears to be doing research into being a more successful child abuser combined with his past makes me feel that he has demonstrated he did not deserve the chance he got.

Unfortunately there's articles suggesting he is alive. Looks like a Twitter rumour. It did remind people about him though.

Unfortunately he's probably still alive, at least that's the claim. At least according to The Sun (yeah I know), he's in max security after being caught with kiddy porn and they claim he might be back in for life this time finally :optimistic:.

His subsequent life shows he squandered whatever possibility for redemption he might ever have had, and it is long past time that (if he is not dead) he gets put away for good with no more chances.
 
I'm surprised there isn't a "Thompson/Venables is dead" rumour launched every week on Facebook. The masses love getting worked up about paedos. (See also: Huntley, Watkins).
