A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.

But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

It's fair to say that the majority of Londoners may not be able to make their way to Chorley. Neither the M1 nor M6 motorways take them right to it, how can they possibly be expected to find it?
As such while it's not the real G7 but the speakers G7 I would wager it'll be tricky. Not impossible, Manchester has its problems with the Extinction Rebellion stains so they are aware of the approximate area but I think it might still be safe.
That assumes they can even escape all the new diversions and traffic calming measures to get out of the city.

We're running out of C02, because gas prices are up and the people who make C02 have stopped making C02. Thus, no ice to cool shit and no way of humanely killing animals (which means meat will now be Halal, as they're the only slaughterhouses to not use humane ways of killing animals)

I mean, call me retarded or whatever, but the process for C02 capture is a by product from fertiliser...Hasn't Thumberg being bitching about high c02 and greenhouses gasses for years? Just turn the hoover on and suck it out the air. (joking obvs)

What is concerning is that gas prices have gone up 250% since january.

So this christmas, you will have no food because of shortages, no turkey because they can't be slaughtered and granny will be dead because she will have frozen to death. Shame the billions spent on lockdown weren't spent on something more useful. Buckle up Buckeroos, Winter is going to be full of discontent.

Labour conference: Not right to say only women have a cervix, says Starmer

Sir Keir Starmer says it is "not right" to say only women have a cervix amid a row involving one of his MPs.
Rosie Duffield came under fire after supporting online criticism of a tweet, which referred to "individuals with a cervix" to be inclusive of trans men.
The incident was called transphobic by trans rights supporters - but Labour MP Ms Duffield rejects the claim.
Asked about the row,

Sir Keir said claiming only women have cervixes was "something that shouldn't be said".

But Health Secretary Sajid Javid attacked the Labour leader, saying his remarks were a "total denial of scientific fact".

This confirms labour will be unelectable next election. They really need to eject, with maximum prejudice, the woke/communist/sjw element from their party. How they can't see that it's only upper-middle class, university educated wankers that support this stuff is baffling.

The average working class man doesn't agree with your shite labour.

We desperately need a viable 3rd party, or for the Lib Dems to be of use for once.

Amazing. The Tories have literally set the bar for Health Secretary at "knows what a woman is", and Labour have still found a way to fucking slither under it.

I don't believe Kier Starmer even wants to be PM at this point. His behaviour is not consistent with that goal at all.

I mean, he was head of the CPS and was absolutely sickening in the amount of rapes he refused to prosecute.
I assume he just isn't even bothering to hide his true intentions. Nobody will punish him for it, he'll be rewarded even.

fuck sake, how has labour not split down the middle yet? i fucking shocked it didnt under corbyn, now there is this shite being paraded around. Why would a 57 year old lorry driver from 't north ever vote for these twats?

Labour is split on economics but all wings of the party are essentially in total agreement on woke bullshit. Many years ago there was a "Blue Labour" movement pushed by some think tanks, which urged for a more socially conservative Labour platform, but it has basically no support from the party membership and only a handful of backbench MPs could be described as aligning with it.

What we have is the Labour left and the Labour centre/right both misdiagnosing the party's issues. The left thinks that Starmerites are out of touch because they're too similar to the Tories on economic policy. The centre/right thinks Corbynites are out of touch because they are dangerous commie radicals. Neither wants to admit that there is anything wrong with the cultural progressive platform that both these factions agree with, and anyone who suggests there's a problem is shouted down. Remember this is the party which had a massive inner uproar and conflict over Ed Miliband's team making "controls for immigration" (Literally that vague of a statement) a campaign pledge in 2015. I actually think Labour is worse than the US Democrats in this regard.

I assume it hasn't split yet because the two sides are the ones trying the grab the brand and neither side wants to make the first move.

I think he's just there to row back on the hardcore trots in his party before stepping aside and looking for some superstar blairite to step up. Where he will find one of those is a good question, because they aren't currently in his party.

He's just passed a party amendment to leadership elections. Now need 20% of MPs to support to stand and getting Labour membership does not automatically mean you can vote for a leader, you need to be a member for 6 months. That's presumably to stop young students en mass from running in and electing another Corbyn.

Yeah the commie section of Labour are very pissed by that last rule saying it's a right wing ploy or some shit.

I've been thinking for a while that they're gonna force Stephen Kinnock (son of Neil Kinnock, and husband of a former Danish PM) in a leadership election eventually. He's got that slimy bland-centrist quality about him and with ample helpings of nepotism to boot.

Ah sweet, can't wait for the new Labour reboot with all our favorite sons and daughters from 80s Labour reprising their role as the most useless opposition ever until the Corbyn season.

I'm way out of know regarding UK politics since Covid hit, but yeah he could be doing that. My read is he's basically in the position of Michael Howard, there to fill in and organize and get ready for someone like Cameron to step up, in his case maybe Kinnock. Will this help the party? Probably not since they are going full woke, which is not what most working class are worried about.

You skipped the best bit of that article;

Ms Duffield is not attending this week's party conference in Brighton, having said there were concerns for her safety after threats from activists.
But Sir Keir said he had spoken to Ms Duffield and "she didn't want to come because it would cause a distraction from the ideas that we're putting forward".
So she's had threats and not been permitted to attend the conference. To which Kier's response is to brush that off and call her a distraction. Remember that next time Labour bang on about women's safety.

From the article @Hot Cup of Joe shared.

Angela Raynor's currently in the shit for calling Boris scum. Real mature and respectful!
Not in the article now. BBC removing criticism of Labour again?

Of course she's also done this in the House of Commons and been forced to back down before.

Here's something more cheerful.

The Dalai Lama is backing efforts to save a Scottish café inspired by a promise a Tibetan woman made him almost 20 years ago.
Reka Gawa, 39, opened the Himalaya Café in Edinburgh after a chance meeting with the spiritual leader at the Scottish Parliament in 2004.
He asked her to stay in Scotland to promote their culture.
The landlord is now selling the café but Reka, who currently rents it, hopes to buy it to avoid closure.
A spokesman for the Dalai Lama told BBC Scotland he knew about the cafe's work and hoped it would be able to continue.
Reka was brought up in Mussoorie in India and moved to Denmark when she was 13. When she was 22 she moved to Edinburgh and got a job at the Scottish Parliament.
"I served the Presiding Officer George Reid coffee every morning," she told BBC Scotland.
"And one day he said did I know the Dalai Lama was coming later that day and would I like to meet him as he knew I was Tibetan."
She rushed home to put on her best traditional Tibetan dress, a blue chupa.

She said: "I was so excited and happy and nervous to meet him in person as I had only seen him in photographs and I called my parents in India to tell them.
"I waited for him in the lobby and then I could see him coming towards me and my heart was beating very fast, I was crying and tears were rolling down my face.
"Then suddenly he was standing next to me and he was holding my hands to comfort me because I was crying, they were tears of joy."
The spiritual leader asked her where she was from and how long she had been in Scotland.
She said: "He said he wanted to give me some advice that it was very important to promote the Tibetan culture.
"I promised him I would stay here in Scotland and that it would be my first priority. It was like a dream."

Who is the Dalai Lama?

  • The Dalai Lama is the head monk of Tibetan Buddhism and traditionally was responsible for the governing of Tibet, until the Chinese government took control in 1959. Before 1959, his official residence was Potala Palace in Lhasa, the capital of Tibet.
  • According to Buddhist belief, the current Dalai Lama is a reincarnation of a past lama who decided to be reborn again to continue his important work, instead of moving on from the wheel of life.
  • The name Dalai Lama means Ocean of Wisdom.
  • After the death of a Dalai Lama it has traditionally been the responsibility of the High Lamas of the Gelugpa Tradition and the Tibetan government to find his reincarnation.
  • The High Lamas search for a boy who was born around the same time as the death of the Dalai Lama.
  • It can take around two or three years to identify the Dalai Lama, and for the current, 14th Dalai Lama, it was four years before he was found.

Reka decided she would find a way to open a Tibetan café in Edinburgh with a meditation room.
In 2006, she left her catering position at the Scottish Parliament, and she established Himalaya Café in South Clerk Street in 2007.
She said: "I was walking in Newington and I saw a 'to let' sign in the window. When the owner showed me inside I couldn't believe what a mess there was but I felt a strong feeling, a calling, and I knew I had to find a way to get the deposit so I could fulfil his Holiness' wish."
With help from friends she renovated the café.
She said: "They all did the work in exchange for food from me. If you have a good intention in your heart then good things happen."

Reka has built up a strong community over the last 14 years at the café and has a meditation room downstairs, which anyone can use to meditate for free.
The building which houses the café is now being sold as the landlord wants to retire.
Reka said he had given her first refusal to buy the shop. She has taken out a bank loan and also borrowed money from her family and friends, but still needs to raise more by 1 December.
Sonam Steering Farsi, representative of the Dalai Lama in northern Europe, Baltic states and Poland, said the spiritual leader knew of the café and Rekha's work to promote Tibetan culture.
He added: "I appreciate it very much that Reka has been promoting Tibetan culture in Scotland for many years and would like to see her cafe business uninterrupted, providing the taste of Tibetan food and tranquillity to the Scots in Edinburgh."
Reka added: "I would feel sad if I couldn't save the cafe. It's my life's work and I want to keep my promise to his Holiness."

UK far right promoting sexual violence against women, report finds

Sexual violence is increasingly being promoted by the British far right, according to new analysis documenting how misogyny is used to steer individuals towards adopting racist and antisemitic views.

Investigators found that pro-rape comments were “not uncommon” among the UK extreme right and that a culture has taken root that endorses sexual violence. Analysing misogyny and anti-feminist channels on the messaging app Telegram, a key online platform for the far right, they found sexual assault was a “prominent theme”.

So in the last few years we've had Muslim rape gangs in almost every major UK city, "honor killings", refugees killing women and literally chopping them up, but hey, "the far right" are the biggest threat to UK women, apparently.

So in the last few years we've had Muslim rape gangs in almost every major UK city, "honor killings", refugees killing women and literally chopping them up, but hey, "the far right" are the biggest threat to UK women, apparently.
The report, from anti-fascist organisation Hope Not Hate and the Antisemitism Policy Trust, reveals how the far right has become adept at exploiting a perceived loss of status among white men. It follows last month’s shootings in Plymouth when gunman Jake Davison killed six people after expressing deeply misogynistic ideas.
Yeah, no surprise there. Not an official government report though, just the usual suspects.
