As someone who was actually involved in both sides of computer education in college (student and teacher), let me tell you, the department heads bend over backwards to get as many women involved in their programs as possible and keep them there. Programming camps for girls, women-only scholarships, and even lower grading standards for female students. Yes, one of the professors I was a TA for explicitly told me to grade the women in my classes on a curve.
Guess what? None of it helps. Freshman year, plenty of girls around. Within a year, that number started to dwindle. By the time I was nearing the end of my undergrad, I could count the girls in my classes on one hand, or one finger, or zero. Never saw any sort of sexist behavior from my classmates or teachers driving women away. The women that did stick around, though? They did good work. They were as enthusiastic about the material as the guys and capable in their own right.
The sorry truth that people like John refuse to admit is that, on average, women don't tend towards the hard sciences. Those that are interested should be encouraged, of course, but trying to force people into doing things they're not fond of is only going to waste their time and take positions away from those who are truly invested in that field.
Of course, all of this is in response to John taking a general "teaching programming is hard" tweet and turning it into another reeeeee post about how the computer dudebros are keeping wahmen down. Literally "women and children most affected."
