So, yes, Frank's bit of epic prose is where you'd have to be as writer in terms of talent, but there's two important downsides. First, there is no money in short fiction these days. Most of the magazines that publish it are essentially paying what they did in 1978, if they pay at all (websites typically do not), and that's if they're still around. And a great many aren't. Second, it ain't what you know it is who you know in terms of getting anything published at all. Meaning you gotta be in the circlejerk to get noticed.

If I remember correctly, "If You Were a Dinosaur, My Love" winning a Hugo was sort of the straw that broke the camel's back in spawning the Sad Puppies movement.

See, I don't think you're "hating the game." "The game" usually involves writers or other artists who are generally around the same level of talent -- some better than others, some marginal, some outright geniuses -- who use connections and favors to nudge the odds in their favor: a book deal here, a chance for a film option there, etc. The galling thing about John (and Frank with this story; I don't know his artwork at all) is that he possesses no measurable talent whatsoever. Nothing he does uplifts, inspires, challenges, or amuses (except unintentionally). He produces nothing but crap, which shouldn't surprise, because his only gift seems to be for conning people. If Rev60 were even a half-decent game with one or two interesting ideas, it might be a little less rage-inducing, but it isn't: it's $400,000 shovelware that was never intended to do anything but raise the awful profile of its creator.

Shit, this stuff might even be understandable if "Brianna Wu" were an attractive woman ... but he doesn't even have that going for him. Or a decent personality! It's like someone just opened a random cell from a 19th century bedlam house and gave its occupant a podcast.
 
I feel like I should point out that Frank didn't actually win a Nebula, he just handed out the trophies. The octopus story was his attempt to win a Hugo for writing, which so far he hasn't.

Slightly off topic but I noticed this during a phase I went through of reading lots of collections of neo-Lovecraftian short stories as a respite from the academic reading I was having to do at the time, things like The Book of Cthulhu or Black Wings etc.

I went into them expecting trash but was not prepared for just how shitty 90% of the stuff that's printed in those things ended up being. I'm talking dreadful here. Added to that was the fact that whenever I thought one of the stories was decent, most of the time I'd look up the author and find out that they'd been dead for decades and were part of the first or second wave of Lovecraft acolytes.

Anyway I spent a little bit of time looking into the neo-Lovecraftian scene and I found out it basically revolves around S.T. Joshi who is considered the pre-eminent Lovecraft scholar and wrote a biography that's considered definitive called I Am Providence. Basically everyone in these collections somehow has a personal link to Joshi, and he is very involved as the editor in a lot of the publications. I reckon a few emails oiling his ego and you'd get your writing in the next collection he is editor for.

To tie this back to Wu, like @Peace and Harmony said, it really does get to me that someone who on one hand sees themselves as a 'woman' of the people will openly brag about their unearned privilege, connections and financial comfort. In politics, if you're gonna go for the woke populist look, you're supposed to hide that stuff away or at least own up to it but show through your actions and lifestyle choices that you do really care about normal people's concerns and are using your advantaged position to help others.

But Wu being Wu casually posts humblebrag pictures of a renowned trophy tactically placed next to a bag out of most people's price range, because deep down she is an entitled elitist who thinks that being given $200,000 by your parents to pursue your personal whims is normal.

Honestly I think Frank likes being with someone who lets him revert to childhood. I think he really loves playing with tanks and Nerf guns, watching anime, and talking about spaceships. The fact that he's so obviously superior to Brianna and she can never step up to him on any level is just a bonus. She's the perfect playmate for a giant manchild.
