I don't think it has such a huge impact.
Remember Call of Duty infinite warfare? Its reveal trailer was the most disliked video in YouTube history up until recently. Guess what though? It was still the best selling game of 2016.
BF may have a large audience but the demographic is still by far narrower than Fifa. Your assertion that social media doesn't affect this scale doesn't make any sense. A single reddit controversy hit Battlefront 2 and EA had to change the monetization scheme as damage control, and that's Star Wars. You yourself said BFV sold poorly because it was "mediocre," but how did customers hear that negative buzz in advance of their purchase if not social media? And the mediocre COD game that released alongside was a hit. It's almost like something happened, something before the game's release, that generated a shitstorm of negative buzz and instead of positive buzz...
