Atomic Heart - Russian BioShock-Like Soviet Diesselpunk Shooter feat. Hot Robot Twins

I have been playing it slowly over the weeks and having a blast. Here are my thoughts on it:

- Game runs out of the box on Linux but performance is not very good. Using Bottles however makes it run flawlessly.

- Art direction is based and redpilled. Graphics are nice but style is forever. The devs obviously understand this and went all out on making sure it looks good.

- The protagonist doesn't seem to shut up but putting the voices to Russian makes it tolerable. The big issue seems to be that the writers translated their script from Russian to English instead of localizing. You can tell there is a load of shit that makes no sense in english that is actually russian slang being directly translated (crispy crickets), or references that make sense for russians in the 1950s but that no one is getting right now. In a way I like it as it really sells the "alien" world of the game. I certainly prefer this sort of weird dialogue in Russian than having everyone speak in Marvel quips.

- On the same vein, some people are confused about the way the protagonist acts and how he seems to not be as curious as one should be in the situation. This also seems to stem from the fact the game is set in 1950's USSR and people not realizing the cultural background. Despite the big alternate history setting the game lets you know Stalin still happened and so did the purges. P3 isn't being a NPC out of stupidity, he is literally keeping his head down and fucking saving himself from a NKVD bullet for asking too many questions out of reflex. Later on in the game you can see him come out of his shell and question things again once he relaxes a bit and realizes the stakes.

- I too fell for the shotgun meme. Rip KS-23 I will make sure not to leave you behind whenever I start a new game in the future.

- In that same note the recycling of crafting materials is very nice and makes the game much less of a resource slog, though I still end up scavenging like a crackhead out of reflex and desire to see the number go up

- The game doesn't treat you like a drooling retard. The protag might throw quips around during combat and comment on some story beats and such but he never goes "Wow I should check that out" "Maybe I need to look for a lever" "I wonder if there is a secret entrance" and shit like that. You wanna go inside Polygon 6? Here is the map. Oh you can't figure out where the entrance is? Well too bad fucker this is a military facility under lockdown and you are just some random spetsnaz not the overseer or designer you either try and figure out yourself or look it up online. It's refreshing to have to actually crack my head and think about the issue. The solution for this one for example is you have to remember that the security system interface lets you open doors, so you need to look for the local security tower, connect to a dandelion camera near the entrance and click to open it. And that is good.

I honestly believe that they´ve been betting on people trashing their shotguns.

Imagine giving up the best & prettiest weapon there is for material.
 
I just got outside the starting facility a few days ago. It's a bit different once you get outside. I imagine when you go back indoors the game will go back to like how it was when you first started. But it's still Russian Bioshock or Prey. It's still a good as well. I don't regret buying it like I did with Wolfenstein The New Colossus. That game was shit. I never finished it, and I uninstalled it. The repair bots are annoying. They keep repair the cameras and some of the robots I kill. Don't stay in one place long. I find it's easier to be kind of stealthy.

you can overcharge the halcyions. all electrical things go offline for like 15 real life minutes. open the gates to the test sites before doing this because cameras and doors also go offline
 
The time limit for shutting down the overworld robots is pretty generous after you go inside the little white building and disable the HAWK. This building is almost always directly underneath it, too, so you don't have to spend much time figuring out which camera to control. Also, the scanner allows you to loot and talk to any corpses you find efficiently so there's no reason to derp around, though I still had plenty of time to do that.

Their aggro radius (on normal at least) is also small so it's not difficult to run from them and drop aggro if you accidentally trigger the alarm. Disabling the cameras with Shok is the easiest way to move around if you don't want to go through the trouble of downing the HAWK since you can get away with destroying plenty of robots just as long as you aren't being filmed.

It's definitely a good looking game and will hold up well over time. I remember seeing it all the way back in 2018 and thinking it looked really weird and interesting. It's been on my wishlist that long. I'm glad it finally got released but I heard some of the really crazy stuff got cut or something.

I have heard people complain about the dialogue from the character and the English dialogue lines. But I honestly don't mind it. It's not great but it's not as bad as people make it out to be. I have heard people say crispy critters before. I read a Reddit post a while back and people were asking what it meant. It's clearly supposed to be holy shit. Like holy shit that was awful. Holy shit I am glad to be out of there. In the first Mercenaries game pilots on American helicopters would say holy frijole when shot with an RPG. It's like none of these people ever played a game before or seen an action movie. They never played Duke 3D or anything like that. The main character is definitely a spoof of these types characters. The people who made the game are well aware of Western media and culture. The first time you enter the facility and encounter one of the human robots he says a line from Terminator "The machines rose up from the ashes". These devs have seen a lot Western movies and games. It's clearling inspired by the Bioshock games especially Infinite. Throw in a little Westworld as well.

The only complaint I have about the English dialogue is I wish they would have gotten people that can do a cheesy Russian accent. Like something you would hear in a movie. Like the Germans from most WW2 movies made in the US. The Nazis from Indiana Jones come to mind and Wolfenstein games. It's just really weird to hear all these people speaking in American or in some cases British accents when we are supposed to be in the Soviet Union. I have to keep reminding myself that my character isn't American, and we are supposed to be in a fictional alternate timeline version of the Soviet Union. I would love to hear some cheesy Russian accents because I think it would go well with the game's kind of crazy story. The German scientist in the game has a cheesy German accent at least he does when you use the English dialogue. I think it's great it makes me think of Dr. Strangelove.

I have gone DSP a few times in the game. I hate to admit it. It doesn't tell you what to do. I encountered this when I had to figure out that puzzle with the cows chickens and pigs. I kept thinking it was a pattern, but it isn't. You have to turn all the squares green and that's it. Then I had another DSP moment when I had to move that tank full of pesticide through the facility. It didn't explain how just that I had to do it. You either figure it out on your own or pull out your smartphone and watch a YouTube video. There is a marker telling you where to go but that's it. I have seen people complaining about the scanner mode. Saying it's wallhacks or whatever. I don't mind it. It makes finding loot and enemies easier. It helps when you get outside.

It's not perfect and has some issues. But it's a pretty good game. It's also not their first. I have seen people saying it's not bad for their first game. They had a game on Steam before and I think it was called Soviet Space Park, but I might be wrong. I watched some videos of it on YouTube and saw some pictures of it and you can see some similarities.

You're correct in that it's not their first game, but I suppose you could say it's their first big game so I'm still impressed. So far, it's my favorite game of the year though we still have 9 months to go.

I'm a sucker for old-school soviet art style and the robots that aren't the twins look cool and have that nice rounded style that the soviets are known for. should I pick it up? wait for a sale? the reviews i've seen from steam make me feel that once its on sale it'll be worth.

I paid full price and I'm happy with my choice, though it's definitely worth getting on sale. The soundtrack is amazing and there is one song that keeps playing in my head even though I beat the game several weeks ago.

People compare Atomic Heart to BioShock a lot, but I played BioShock Remastered after Atomic Heart just to refresh my memory and Atomic Heart's gameplay is much better. As for the story, that's where it has some things in common with BioShock, but I like the science behind the polymer a lot more than the magic sea slugs. It also has more dark humor like what you would see in Fallout and Wolfenstein: New Order (not New Colossus because that game is garbage).

I know it's not very fair to compare a 2007 game to a 2023 one, but BioShock just hasn't aged well and the story doesn't seem all that mindblowing. I think a lot of the "it's a masterpiece" remarks come from console players who had never played an immersive sim before since PC players already had the awesome (and frankly, superior) System Shock series.

The game does have some jank but I found it very tolerable, and you may or may not like the personality of the player character. I do highly recommend the game because it was a very memorable experience warts and all.
 
This game is a weird one. I have a shitload of issues with it but I still feel compelled to finish it for some reason.

The voiceacting is fucking terrible, text is pretty much illegible on Series X because of how small it is, I've gotten permanently stuck in scenery 5 or 6 times already, the open world sucks shit so I just run past everything to get where I'm going and numerous doors haven't opened/switches stopped working which has forced me to reload my last save a good few times to get them to work.

However, the setting is interesting and the moment-to-moment actions feels good so I'll probably persevere with it. It's janky as fuck but it's got an odd charm as a result.
 
I didn't have any issue with reading the text, but I was on PC so maybe that is why. I have had 3 issues with being stuck in terrain that I had to reload/kill myself to get away from so that is a actual issue. I disagree on the open world though.

The text is apparently a known issue on console that is going to be patched at some stage.

A lot of the interface is very obviously designed for M&KB as well so i'm guessing PC was supposed to be the main platform.

On Series X, too. Had issues of getting stuck, one time the dash stopped working and the biggest one was when a room didn't render. No text issues, though

The only thing I've ever heard people praise Bioshock for was its worldbuilding and philosophy. Console players especially probably didn't get much exposure to that sort of thing (was Deus Ex or System Shock ever released on consoles?). It presented a very interesting setting (art deco capitalist underwater colony) with a story that was honestly pretty stupid and shallow like all video game stories, but compared to the typical video game story was a mindfuck and felt really smart. The underwater stuff also feels even better when you recognize that its a reference to how Atlantis is brought up in Atlas Shrugged.

Mostly there's just this dark majesty to it, Andrew Ryan was a compelling character, you see this wonder of the world that he's built, want it to succeed, but at the same time you've come along when the end is already in motion. The degenerates he's recruited have shown what monsters people are when society doesn't value morality (this is a bit absurd, totalitarian societies are WAY better at doing that, but it's how the game wants to play it) and if you read the novel it also clarifies how Ryan's plan basically ended the way the island of Alphas in Brave New World did (someone still has to clean the toilets and that's unbearable to a society of only elites) and that a bunch of "individualists" all following this individualist along to his cult-like compound is probably going to end poorly (Ryan doesn't have the self control to not turn into a tyrant when he's faced with failure himself).

It was genius. The gameplay was fun, but I don't think anyone really cared about it compared to how it played with ideas. I'd say Deus Ex is the same way, Deus Ex DOES have notable gameplay that people talk about, but what people really care about is the way it philosophizes. But I also have a strong preference for Randian heroes (David Sarif in Deus Ex HR, the dude from Tai-Pan in books).
 
So I was gifted a code and installed it on my little 2080 laptop. Man...I'm running it at max settings and although I'm only past the first area, this is without a shadow of doubt the most beautiful game I've played. The intro is jaw droppingly gorgeous and I found myself just looking around (especially at the floor reflections).
I hope the game itself is actually good.
I chuckled at the grandma who looks and sounds like Queen Liz
