Why did this merger happen? There are no "higher ups" at Compound, it was Cumia's escape from that sort of shit, and now he's forcing it on his employees?
It can't be money, He's always said Compound is a treading water situation.
Maybe he just wanted to be the fucker for once instead of the fuckee.
Anthony has for most of his career been successful in doing a radio show with someone else handling the business end (Opie). He talked about how Opie would do all the behind the scenes stuff, the bookings, the promo stuff, and the contract negotiations. Anthony (when he used to give a shit) would do the show prep and audio engineering/editing/etc and then when he stopped giving a shit would just show up and be Anthony.
When Ant started CM - he pretty clearly wanted to find another Opie to handle all of the business stuff while just doing all of the Anthony stuff and making money, but the problem quickly became twofold of Anthony.
1) Opie was
deeply motivated - he wanted to beat Howard Stern
bad, and it was really personal for him. You can't hire that level of motivation. On top of that - Opie was passionate about the
Opie and Anthony show, not the Anthony Cumia Compound Show - it's hard to motivate someone else to personalize something that does not actually belong to them.
2) Opie for all of his faults (not being that funny, sometimes stomping on bits, trying things that didn't work) turned out to know a whole lot about radio. Nearly every move they made, every contract dispute, nearly every controversy, every programming move - worked out pretty well for O&A. They went from two small town nobodies to one of the largest radio shows to ever have existed. While factually no one "beat" Howard Stren - Opie and Anthony felt like they were the closest to ever have done so.
Anthony found out this kind of person can't just be replaced with "my brother Joe knows a guy", Keith the Cop, or really anyone Anthony has a friendly relationship with (because Anthony is a coward). Anthony works best with someone that he isn't friends with and doesn't have authority over - which is why O&A worked well despite "being two guys who aren't friends and just work together".
