Started Mawaru Penguindrum tonight for some strange reason. I'm already drawing parallels with Utena, so I hope it does its own thing as it goes along.

I read this and thought "Thanks I hate it" because it sounds incredible cheesy and badly written. I was relieved when I found out that nope, this is not what's happening.

Nowhere does Griffith show remorse. He feels sad and lonely but his crimes aren't mentioned anywhere. This would be fucking bad writing. How would you even put all that on only 1 page??

"Sorry Guts & Casca that I raped Casca, sacrificed everyone and destroyed your lives." -The End.
He's the King of Longing. He finally achieved his dream and is probably ruling over the entire world, but it's not enough because what made him truly happy is forever lost.

Can't speak to the similarities with Utena, but if you like weird psychedelic stuff it does that pretty well. Coupled, of course, with the obligatory semi-philosophical thematic ramblings that you would expect in such a series.

3rd season of Iruma-kun was confirmed at the end of the last episode, no date yet but assuming its the same as last time it probably will air mid to late 2022

I'll still watch it but ngl it might be the weakest season when it airs since the next arc is really long and might take most of the run (and that's assuming it gets another 2 cours) and its the most action heavy arc in the series so far and can't tell how much effort BNP is gonna put in it.

They have to maintain the rage somehow, now that Trump's out of office and everybody's looking at Biden's fuckups. Though I'd stop short of saying they came up with clever ways to maintain their rage.

Does anyone here read MHA, or is that too basic? One Punch Man? Battle Angel: Alita?
alita was the first ova i watched as a kid through a distant cousin, Vol 5 was the first manga i ever bought at borders. there was a time and a place for it. I thought cameron's movie was a good adaptation. last order and Mars chronicles are interesting reads but they feel a bit fanfictiony. the original story is a good, self contained story. I haven't kept up with Mars Chronicles because the story feels like a reconned prequel. but i read the story 21 years ago. but theres been more cyberpunk stuff so it feels really dated.

I saw the first episode of boruto. it seems lighthearted and more comedic. does it get all mopey dopey? I feel like the sentiment is that boruto sucks.

I’m not a fan of Excel Saga but I swear I was once force fed this episode about Menchi.

And all these references about Menchi being a dog.

But why the fuck does Menchi look like a cat?

This is an interesting read:

The Girls Trying to Bring About National Pride (Hinomaru Gaisen Otome) is a right-wing nationalist manga/cartoon series by Akiko Tomita. Episodes are first published in JAPANISM, a bimonthly magazine from Seirindo, and later compiled into comic books.

You don't need to read Volume 1 to read this because each volume discusses a different topic.

This volume explores yet a “hidden truth” on the comfort women issue. The chapter opens with a former classmate of the main character who had moved to Southern California discussing violent hate crimes and bullying that she is experiencing as a result of the construction of a comfort women memorial in Glendale. The storyline is based on the thoroughly debunked false claim of rampant bullying against Japanese children in that city.

The previous volume published in 2015 follows the main character, a middle school girl, who encounters an anti-Korean demonstration and “discovers” the “truth” that the mainstream media hide about the oppression of Japanese people by the Korean minority. The anti-Korean demonstration Tomita depicts are similar to those organized by Zaitokukai in reality, and many counter-demonstrators who protest them are also said to be based on real anti-fascist activists.

The artist is very active in social media, and her content is filled with yaoi and right wing extremist content:

She also created a manga on Antifa:

I've had a song by Hajime Chitose on my player for years and years and I never saw the anime it is from
Blood +
It looks like a fun action anime where a girl slays vampires. Is it good? I'm curious but there's something called Blood C? Confusing

Copyright Trolls Targeting Manga and Anime Arrive in Japan

This is bad news for torrent users in Japan.

Copyright trolls have made their way to Japan.

Copyright holders have been sending settlement offers (threatening letters) ranging from one million yen to hundreds of millions of yen to users who download manga, anime, and pornographic videos from Nyaa, and some users have signed these outrageous settlements for fear of criminal or civil lawsuits.

In the case of manga, the settlement is around one million yen, but in the case of pornographic videos, the full threats range from tens of millions to hundreds of millions of yen.

Nakashima723, an obscure manga artist, brags on his Twitter page that he has taken large sums of money from users who downloaded his manga and used it to pay for printing a book.

His manga is not famous at all and he is a typical copy right troll as he earns a lot of money by threatening copyright infringers.

Furthermore, last month, Akutami Gege, the creator of the famous manga "Jujutsu Kaisen" also joined this copyright troll.

He asks ISPs to send him information on subscribers who have downloaded his manga and anime.

The equivalent license fee for the original copyright holder in the case of animation is so low that he will not be able to recover the associated costs unless he becomes a copyright troll.

The P2P Finder, an anti-piracy tracking system, is used to collect information on torrent users.

This information is used to request contract information from ISPs. The system has been approved by anti-piracy groups, so there is no doubt that user information is in the hands of the extortion gangs.

In the coming months, the extortion gangs will send threatening letters to the infringers.

This disclosure is being done by the Electric Sheep Law Firm, known for its copyright trolling.

It is located on the edge of the capital city of Tokyo - a loser's paradise.

The author, Akutami Gege, is a man who plagiarizes from other manga, but he takes a hard line against piracy.

The amount of damages allowed under Japanese law is actually the equivalent of a license fee, which is very low, but the Japanese, who are not accustomed to litigation, have succumbed to this complete blackmail for fear of criminalization and civil suits.

In order to eliminate copyright trolls from Japan, we need your help to spread the word.

So far, the main players of copyright trolls in Japan are as follows:

Law firms;
Electric Sheep Law Firm(電機羊法律事務所): Third-rate cartoonists, recently joined by famous cartoonists
ITJ Law Firm(ITJ法律事務所): Porn video maker KMP uses it to send blackmail letters.
KMP: Porn Video Maker
Akutami Gege(芥見下々)

The funniest third-rate cartoonists;
Nakashima723(ナカシマ723)
Komiya Toshimasa(宮利公松)
Nakasone Haiji(中曽根ハイジ)

One thing that I wonder about Anime/Manga, is it a normal thing for a certain character to get a ton of fanart drawn of them for their birthday? I see a lot of fanart of Kotori Minami from Love Live!, as her birthday is today. (September 12)

I also wonder why birthdays aren't as emphasized in Western Animation, as I don't remember seeing a cartoon character get lots of fanart drawn for their birthday. And in some cases, the character's birth date isn't even revealed. Also, does it seem like Anime/Manga characters have their full names revealed more often, given how it seems like a lot of cartoon characters don't have a last name, i.e. most of the contestants in the Total Drama series, except for the few character last names revealed as part of a gag/joke?

Western stuff isn't really big on the character sheets with bloodtype, horoscope, fav food, ect, but even minute characters get that in anime, so yeah I remember seeing birthday art since social media started, idols seem to get the same treatment from fans.

In Japan, there is a belief that blood types can predict a person's personality. I've heard it's also used as a shorthand way for the Japanese audience to immediately gauge a character's personality without outright telling them. It might be the same with birthdays, but sometimes they might just want to give a character a more fleshed out backstory.

I also lurk on Japanese Twitter sometimes and yeah, drawing characters on their birthday seems to be a common thing across all their media, not just anime.

Lol I was first introduced to this phenomenon in both the Pokémon and Digimon fandoms, but in interesting ways. For Pokémon, each monster practically has their own little fandom, but Mewtwo is unique in that on top of a pretty big following, he is the only Pokémon with a given birthday. So every year on February 6, you see posts, tributes, and fan-art and fanfics of him show up like clockwork.

With Digimon, it's not so much a birthday celebration as it is an annual thing around August 1st the fanbase affectionately dubs "Odaiba Day", which can extend to the 3rd as that's the setting date for the first Adventure series. Although this is special as it's technically canon in-universe because every year around August 1st, the characters reflect back on the day they arrived into the Digital World and then returned to save Japan from Myotismon. The fanbase takes this a step further by honoring the next few days as "death days" for various Digimon, such as Gotsumon and Pumpkinmon (August 2) and Wizardmon (August 3), and even Leomon and the occasional Piximon, Whamon, and Chuumon since deaths continued past those episodes but technically happen on the same day.

I think it's harmless fun for fans to do that. Even the creators join in on it by drawing characters on their birthdays or on special in-universe anniversaries.
