Currently watching "Angolmois" and "Saga of Tanya the Evil".

Angolmois shows little glimpses of genius, but overall it's kind of weird and too clichéd in many regards, but still oddly watchable.

Saga of Tanya the Evil is... weird. Like... really weird.
The animation has been pretty good with some really great scenes, the backgrounds look gorgeous, the artstyle in general is amazing... but then you have a protagonist that looks like this:

... and it feels like all this amazing stuff is wasted on a really stupid show with a loli-moeblob MC. Sort of like Strike Witches...
But for some reason, it's still fun to watch it, especially since it turns out in Episode 2 that Tanya...
...is the reincarnation of some careerist from real-world Tokyo that is forced to live in that world and his original goal was to just get into the military as quickly as possible, to get a bit of an accomplishment so he could drop out of the army and then continue his life comparatively secure far away from the frontlines - but accidently did such a great job on his first sortie that he ended up being promoted to a high rank and is now forced to serve the military even harder.
It's still fucking stupid that a little kid is serving in the military, but that little tidbit - to me - turns it into "entertaining-stupid".

And I realize that at least half the fun of watching the show is listening to the incredible voice acting of Aoi Yuki.

I've yet to read the manga, but I liked Ao Haru Ride :c. I'm actually pretty picky about my romances these days and shoujo is really full of cringe because of how sugar-coated it is (though I do wish more shoujo manga would get adapted, I want my Black Bird anime dammit), and yet somehow Ao pulled me in. Maybe it was beautifully animated or that the main character just no longer cared about her popularity in becoming more tomboyish/neglectful of herself, but I enjoyed the character interaction.

Couldn't get the appeal of Orange, however. Like I have no idea if the anime was just that incompetent or the story itself is just that convoluted.
 
I've been reflecting on my relationship with Dragonball lately after TFS finishing the Cell saga. I loved the original series when it aired on YTV back when I was in kindergarten, even remember wanting my own Dragonball. Z was on Fox a couple years later, and while I remember watching it, it seemed very off to me. YTV only aired the first arc, so I had no clue who Krillen, Tien, or even Piccolo were. I think it was the first time I ever thought something was edgy, because Goku dies right off the bat, then Yamcha (the only Z fighter I recognized) dies like a bitch when the Saiyans arrive. Fox aired the Saiyan saga, and I do remember being a little upset them not finishing off Vegeta.

Years later they finally aired Namek, and the glacial pace ended up being a problem for me. I found that while I could watch the show, I could never really get into it. I watched through to the end, with Cell and Buu giving me the fucking creeps. Never really cared for GT, never tried Kai and only ever watched the first episode of Super when it first started. My adversion grew to the point I didn't even care when YTV aired the rest of the original series when I was a teen. The movies were never really a big thing for me, except for the original one about Bardock.

I got the Funimation set with the first 5 movies today. Sadly no Bardock. Gonna watch some tonight, then maybe begin watching the original series and move onto Kai. It's just, did my original experience sour me so much on it I never gave it a fair chance? I mean, I know the slow pace is an issue for a lot of people but why did it affect me so? Was it seeing a fun little adventure series do a complete 180 as a kid that I couldn't appreciate it and instead focus on it's flaws? I dunno. I wanna like Dragonball, I really do, so I feel I have to give it this chance.
 
Honestly, I think you're better off just reading the manga from start to finish. The filler in the anime can be fun, but there is definitely a pacing issue in the anime simply because Toei just has that problem in general. Yeah, you may not get to experience the stellar soundtrack and some iconic voice work (though after Kai, the dub for Z is pretty rough), but you'll get the full experience the way Toriyama intended it. It flows very well and it's not boring. Sure, a couple of arcs feel like they drag like Namek and Buu (and Red Ribbon Army, personally), but the artwork alone is enough to keep your interest.
 
There's a YouTuber who goes by Soul who is still a young channel, but is pretty underrated when it comes to anime discussions and needs more love (Pause and Select may be another one that gets overlooked). I don't remember if any of his videos were linked here yet, but have a good recent example that I really enjoyed:

 
Been checking out this rom com sports manga called Saotome Senshu, Hitakakusu. It's about a high-schooler Tsukishima Satoru gets confessed to by local female High-School boxing-talent Saotome Yae. He rejects her initially because he does not want to impede her boxing career (and prevent getting beaten up by her fans). Her coach hears about this and decides to install him as Saotome's trainer so that they can secretly date each other.

i've been getting into this series called "mysterious girlfriend x", and my god if it ain't the most weirdest shit i've watched/read
it's about this high school student who tastes this weird girl's spit, and they start dating under weird circumstances. it's heavy with it's focus on "spit" and i'm pretty sure it's a fetish anime/manga but no matter how hard i've cringed i still wanted to watch/read because their chemistry and relationship development is so god damn interesting. this is the type of shit that makes you look like a degenerate and an intellectual at the same time.
do i recommend it? hell yes i do. is it for everyone? no.
read the manga, the anime is cut to 13 episodes, the manga has 92 chapters (the anime focuses on like, well- 13, and there's way more to fawn over than that), but the anime is still pretty good in terms of what you absolutely need to know about the two.
sure you'll look like a degenerate watching it but it's still a good experience. what anime/manga doesn't make you look like a degenerate anyways, these days?

You forgot to mention that Urabe keeps a pair of scissors tugged in her panties and she regularly uses them when someone gets on her nerves.
and yeah, it's a really weird but oddly compelling manga.

oh yeah totally, that's also pretty fucking weird but badass at the same time. it's so weird how it makes you interested just as much as it makes you cringe.

doubt i'll see much like it again.

It's strangely adorable, honestly, but maybe it's because the character designs are cute. It definitely is something to get used to, but it's quite rewarding, it's really neat that the creator wanted to make a more realistic romance despite the weird premise. I was quite happy there was an anime, even though it was sadly only 13 episodes.

Just be wary about the ending. It's one of the few drawbacks I have about it, especially since it could've (should've?) gone on longer.

i've heard some shit about the ending, and i spoiled it for myself after watching the anime because i was just so curious. and well, i have to say it makes sense for me in a way, i think the creator left it off on a good note.

the way he left it was probably for the better. i find peace in knowing their relationship is quite likely still alive, and quite possibly will stay that way well beyond after they finish high school due to the routine assumingly being kept up.

but i see why people are disappointed, regardless. that's just my little take on it, i guess. for me it wasn't how it ended; it's the journey, and i can tell those four thick ass mgx books i have on my shelf will satisfy me in said terms.

on the other hand, i agree. it should have went on longer, there's probably a lot MORE the creator could have possibly done with the two that many would quite possibly love to see, but all good things need to come to an end at some point, and sadly manga and anime are no exception.

fuck, i love getting analytical and reminiscing over anime like this.

I don't wanna get too much into spoilers myself, but I agree wholeheartedly.

I was hoping for Urabe-Family hijinks, personally. I would have loved to see what Urabe's parents or -god beware- siblings might be like and I feel there would have been a big opportunity to introduce some more crazy stuff into the story.

But it still ended on kind of a cute note, so it's fine. I feel a little let down, but not terribly so.

i agree. i can feel a needle of disappointment but the haystack of joy and hope really covers it up for me in terms of what the ending gave. keep in mind, i've only finished the anime and i'm part-way through volume 3 of the manga.

that's a good idea on what the creator could have done, too. i would have loved that. i guess our only limit is our imagination when it comes to what happened after the ending.
