Mysterious Girlfriend X was a great manga for such a bizarre ass premise.
In that regard it's kind of like "Onani Master Kurosawa"
You might know that one from this image:

that's a good idea on what the creator could have done, too. i would have loved that. i guess our only limit is our imagination when it comes to what happened after the ending.
Angel Densetsu did something similar.

Speaking of which:
If you haven't read it, I highly recommend it, it's about a guy named Kitano that people think is some sort of drug addicted delinquent, even though he's a total softie. The art starts out really crappy but becomes very good soon (it's the same author that made Claymore, btw).
The main focus of the story is Kitano endlessly being at the centre of misunderstandings and people trying to pick fights with him and failing miserably, even though Kitano just wants to calm them down.
I've sperged about this in the Dobson thread a couple of times...

shit bro, i might have to check that out. on the list it goes! sounds like a good read.

It really is a damn good read... and I just googled the manga, to see where you can read it online and I almost fell out of my chair. The OVA is on Youtube. Holy shit. When I first heard about Angel Densetsu, that OVA was like the holy grail. There were only a few stills floating around the web, but someone actually dug it up and put it on Youtube of all places.

Oh, I remember that OVA. That was a riot, and I was so upset it was only two episodes. I should rewatch it again, but get my brothers to watch it with me this time.

I feel like Angel Densetsu is what started the "guy who looks like a delinquent is actually a good law-abiding citizen" trope in manga (least for a comedy), but there might've been something prior to it from the 80s.

I just marathoned through Shadow Skill. It's one of those relatively obscure 1990s old school shounen adventure anime that in my opinion really need more love. The show itself was pretty fun to sit through, it had very likable characters, a surprisingly good dub, and I really love the opening theme.

One of the best things about Mysterious Girlfriend X is how they used a non-anime actress, Ayako Yoshitani, for Mikoto Urabe so that Mikoto's voice sounds really "natural" compared to the rest of the female cast, comprised of typical anime voice actresses, which I think is intentional, since it makes Mikoto stand out for more than just her bizarre behavior.

As for theories about Mikoto Urabe:

People were disappointed that there was never confirmation as to whether or not Mikoto was an extraterrestrial or some kind of supernatural being like a mermaid or sea dragon.

Personally, I eventually came to the conclusion that Mikoto is an "ordinary" human being who became aware of a mild psychic talent that many other humans, like Akira Tsubaki, seem to share. I like the idea that other humans in that universe have this hidden potential which they can awaken given the right circumstances rather than Mikoto Urabe being "alone".

It's like the old Star Wars theory from the original trilogy (which I'm sure has been retconned by now) that, while Luke Skywalker is the most powerful Jedi of his generation, perhaps everyone else in the galaxy has some untapped Force potential, like how Han Solo was able to weakly use Luke's lightsaber despite Han not being a Jedi himself. Except, instead of Midichlorians, it's some kind of empathic energy that can be transmitted through drool.

There's also the issue that by not giving a reason for this weird drool bond, there's the upside that it stays mysterious. If it had been explained with a shitty explanation, it would have been worse than without an explanation.

Saw the My Hero Academia movie last night. Film was pretty good, but I was shocked at how big and intense the audience I was watching the film with was. I know Hero Aca's popularity is huge, but I haven't had a theatical anime experiance this crazy since Resurection F. And with Broly coming out in a few months, it's more than likely this won't be the last time I have an audience like this.

Finally sitting down and watching the whole monogatori series for the first time.
Not done with bakemonogatari yet, I'm starting the snake arc today. I'm a slow watcher.
It's weird and I like it. I went in pretty much blind aside from memes, and it subverted my expectations quite a bit.
Like goddamn I was not expecting this much dialogue. Fun dialogue.

I surprisingly actually like koyomi araragi so far.
and I really really like all the girls so far in the show.

I just found my old Funimation account and was wondering if there's anything worth watching on their anime service

So I finished watching Rurouni Kenshin not long ago. Maybe I'm just a pleb or something, but I didn't think it was all that special, honestly. I was more bored than I was interested, and I tried to pay attention because I wanted to watch it, but I kept feeling sleepy, and this was long before I hit the last third of the anime. It's the weirdest thing, but even so I just didn't really feel anything.

Yeah the anime age pretty badly and the dub was extra bad even for the time. I shocked it was a big as it was. But maybe It was case of it being on toonmai and most show on that block are beloved. It good enough to be filler until the better show were now. or maybe the manga was better, but since the recent happens with the author I don't care to find out.

I remember the pre-Toonami days when this was what everyone didn't shut up about. It seemed like the only good Kenshin was what was shown in those later movies meant to taken place before the manga/TV series when he was a badass.

This Friday and Saturday I was at the Göteborg book fair and my little spying tax investigator eyes spotted an anime/Japanese live action stand where they were selling the Blu-ray/DVD Collector's Edition of Night is Short, Walk on Girl. It ended up costing me 499 kr, but it was 100 % worth it (Yuasa is my #1 favorite anime director). I also purchased Kabi Nagata's My lesbian experience with loneliness and My solo exchange diary 1 in the Science fiction-bokhandeln's stand.

I finished watching Revue Starlight the other day, and I liked it a lot! I really enjoyed all the revues during the auditions, especially the one between Maya and Karen & the final revue, the duet. There’s also some neat plot points relating to the auditions. There was a bit of repetition but I didn’t mind it much, and overall I really enjoyed it!!

I am pleasantly surprised by Eden Zero, the new Hiro Mashima book, the move to a futuristic setting is far better to me, because it allows him to really flex his solid design chops. Also, no spoilers, but I am really enjoying the way he's re-using his old designs too.

It can still go on to be a hot mess, but so far, the ride is quite enjoyable.

Another manga that has been hitting it out of the park lately is Nanatsu no Taizai, after a period of wheelspinning, the manga is finally clicking for me again, and the current arc is probably the most fun I had with it for a while now.

Both books are huge recommends for me now.

Also, Detective Conan is seemingly, finally getting into the climax of the Rum arc after a long, medically-enforced break, and the extremely high-stakes of the arc are making this into a must-read arc. The tension is very real now.

High Score Girl finished fairly recently and it's imo the best of the summer 2018 season. All the characters are great and the CG isn't that bad either. I'm pretty sure it was just made to shill merch(it even has ads in the middle of the show) but it was very a heartwarming show. Hopefully the OVA coming in March is just an extra/special episode and they come out with a season 2. Lupin III: Part 5 also finished and it was great too. Planet With, which also came out summer 2018, is also good. It has nice action and all the characters are pretty likable.

I re-read the manga earlier this year and I really like it, but I never got into the anime, it's sort of cheap and has a lot of really bland and unfitting filler... the manga, though, is worth a read.

Also, the Kenshin OVA "Trust and Betrayal" is absolutely stellar and deserves every bit of praise it gets.

There's a YouTuber who goes by Soul who is still a young channel, but is pretty underrated when it comes to anime discussions and needs more love (Pause and Select may be another one that gets overlooked). I don't remember if any of his videos were linked here yet, but have a good recent example that I really enjoyed:

I'll give it a shot. Subscribed.
