In thinking of Isao Takahata's death, I reminded of the rare English dub of Heidi that was released on home video in the 80's, compiled from the TV series as a feature length thing. Featuring the voices of Judy Jetson, Fred Flintstone and the Control Voice of The Outer Limits (as Grandpa).

Another unusual English dub out there is one for Takahata's Anne of Green Gables series, apparently done down in South Africa.

I really Don’t have high hopes for this. Persona 4 original anime wasn’t that good and I am expecting it’s going to suffer the same problems. Since no one understand how to properly adapt a RPG, and P5 being a 100 hour game with story problems ain’t going to help. Heck it’s because of those problems My expectations are low as is. What a game can get away with doesn’t translate well in anime format. But I would like to be proven wrong, maybe the anime fixes some problems, but the A-1 name doesn’t make me hopeful for that.

Is that the one with two of the three characters leaving from the village dying horribly so the anime can be all dark and edgy?

Yes. And then they fuck that tone up by having the most cringy, failing humor I've seen in a long, long time.

I hate almost everything about it.

I never watched past the first episode. It was too dark for my tastes. And dark as in “for the sake of being dark” kinda way, not the entertaining way.

Thinking about Takahata's passing reminded me of Grumpy Jii-san again, a former YouTube reviewer who posted up a good deal of reviews of different shows and films he saw while traveling across nature's landscapes. It was such an original concept that nobody tried to imitate, yet this guy pulled it off pretty well.

Sadly he passed away in 2014, though I like to think he's still traveling the unknown dimensions of time and space... and watching anime too!

EDIT: Reminded of a post elsewhere that mentioned he was roughly 90 years old when he died, that's quite an achievement for someone who spent his final years watching anime.

Huh. Tiny bit surprised nobody recommended Durarura or Monogatari for "Urban fantasy" settings. Duraura probably going to cover that side of things a bit better.

Urban fantasy is basically every day happenings with a mix of the surprising or supernatural in it.

So Chunni might also fit into that category as well?

Durarara's first season was just outstanding, though for some reason I never managed to go far in it's 2nd though.

It also has by the best set of OP/EDs.

Is there a substantial difference between "urban fantasy" and the term with which I am more familiar, "magical realism" or are they pretty much the exact same thing?

Kamichu! is one of my favourite examples of that vaguely-defined genre; junior high school girl gets nominated to god status, but in a nation with thousands of gods so she's not the supremest of supreme beings and also she still has to be a normal junior high school student at a normal school.

It's a great show with a couple of bizarre episodes like the one where they raise the ghost of the Yamato or the one with a cat version of Fight Club, and then there's the alien with the Kiki's Delivery Service hair ribbon.

One minor aspect of it I like is that it's a 2005 TV series but it's set in 1983-84, though they keep the nostalgia elements subtle enough that you might not even notice that it's set in the past if you don't pay attention to small details.

Toonani’s gonna start reairing FLCL in preparation for the new season in June.

“It might not make sense, but it’s gonna be a hell of a journey.”

I remember watching one episode of FLCL way back in the day. I had no idea what the name of the show was, all I can remember was that weird shit happened and the very end of the episode where a girl revealed her glasses were fake. And then the next episode preview just showed the pink haired lady pitching a baseball over and over again.

It left an impression on me that's for sure. I should probably watch FLCL at some point.

Ah, the Puss in Boots ep.

This is amazing... here's the only pre-Ghibli Takahata work I have not seen, Jarinko Chie, in full on YouTube.

Man, this is hilarious.
This is worth watching, and has some neat tidbits I learned along the way. Apparently this is one of those rare instances where they animated the dialogue after they did the voice work! I almost couldn't tell since I've been so used to the way these things are usually done.
