Haven't seen any mentions of Kaiji yet in this thread. I highly recommend it for anyone looking for something leaning towards the "slice of life" genre but with a few shonen-like aspects. Comes off as dark and feelsy without having to cram in a bunch of sub-plots or fantasy elements. Basis of the series revolves around gambling as well as the physiological aspects of such and some bigger-picture cultural/lifestyle themes that reoccur. Feels relatable even if you do not connect with the MCs specific situation. Went through weeby shonen phase several years ago and have rediscovered my ability to enjoy anime again recently with more lifestyle centered series.

Drawing style is also a plus, the uniqueness but will take a while getting used to all of the big-noses.

No real filler as it is only 2 seasons long, although the middle portion of season 1 is a bit stretched out. OST is fantastic but it took me 3 watchthoroughs to notice it. I'm picky with my animoo so I tend to just rewatch only a handful of series, this being one of them. Other series I enjoy: Usagi Drop, Welcome to the NHK, Ergo Proxy, Watamote, Gantz. However Kaiji is my most recommended since it is not completely niche.

Open to recommendations myself.

Aw fuck yeah, Kaiji's a great series. Have you seen Akagi? It's by the same author, it's fantastic until the very last arc.

Decided I need to re-read Franken Fran for about the seventh time today. No regrets.

I totally forgot about Akagi, from what I've heard it is decently similar to Kaiji as far as the themes and focus on gambling.
I remember someone complaining though about the Mahjong scenes and the fact that many readers/watchers learned the game themselves because of Akagi only to discover the series wasn't really following actual Mahjong rules.
But hey that's not the important part. Will be adding it to my "animoo queue".

Basically Akagi fucks everyone over with an indomitable pokerface, and basically everyone cheats. Other than that, Akagi's fairly exciting despite being all Mahjong. Music is done by the same guy who did the OST for Death Note, I forget if Kaiji was the same in that regard or not.

EDIT: Sadly no one knife fights with their noses like I hoped.

Nice avatar, man. Guts is the shit.

I've been getting into Jojo's Bizarre Adventure lately and holy shit the music is hype as fuck. I really really adore Bloody Stream (2nd opening), shit's really really awesome.

Jojo's the shit, part 3 thus far has been fantastic. Stand Proud's not as swanky as Bloody Stream, but it matches Jotaro really well.

Kenshin is fantastic. I can definitely recommend it, and you've actually reminded me to rewatch it sooner or later.

Anyone a fan of ultra-manly '80s anime? I recently finished Hokuto no Ken and I'm moving on to Hokuto no Ken 2, spacing it out with episodes of Sakigake! Otokojuku.
I'm currently watching Fist of the North Star. It's Sailor Moon for men and that is fine by me.

Since this is the Anime/Manga thread, I just thought I'd mention I started reading Tomie by Junji Ito today.

Goddammit I love Ito's manga.

I watched some episodes of Birdy the Mighty: Decode again last night, so today I tried to look for the original 90's OVA. I found it, but only the dub. The voices are fucking awful. Worse than Decode's dub. I might just have to search for a sub, because I don't think I can handle this.

EDIT: And the dialogue is bad too. Perfect. I'll try to hold out for a few more minutes.

EDIT 2: Welp, no fuckin' seeds for any torrents. If anyone has any subs of the original OVA, PLEASE TELL ME!!!

Watched the 2004 New Getter Robo OVA and right now I'm watching the Getter Robo: Armageddon OVA from 1998. I love the dark and moody artwork of the first couple episodes and the Invaders have really awesome creature design (way better than the Oni from the 2004 OVA).

Want to eventually check out the Knights of Sidonia anime adaptation. I remember reading the first couple volumes of the manga and really enjoying it.

The way Ryoma was drawn in Armageddon was just perfect in my opinion. I dunno, I'm someone who really loves art styles that take advantage of large amounts of detail.

Sometimes I dream of what might have been if lovecraft and junji ito ever teamed up to create the ultimate sanity shattering work of graphic horror fiction

Yeah same here. I especially love the use of light and shadow in Armageddon. I dunno if it's because I used to watch the old Max Fleisher Superman cartoons when I was a kid and they absolutely blew my mind or what, but I'm always drawn to art styles that make use of light and shadow to create a dark, oppressive mood.
