is that how it was? i could be mis-remembering.
Gainax hasn't had anything that could be called an animation team since the early 2010s, Trigger (the original animators of PSG) are the ones doing the production and since they have been on the Gainax Board of Directors along with Gaina and Khana trying to sort out Gainax's financial retardation I would assume the production is still going through unless someone announces otherwise.

Destroy All Localizers

Every time they tell you translating lines into Reddit-brained sub-Whedonesque quipping or into "sussy baka patriarchy you lost your rizz" is necessary to get people to read or watch anime and manga just remember that these people, they hate art and they hate you and they should be shunned from ever having an opinion on anything, failed writers that they are.

Something needs to be done about this long trend of translators who think that their own writing and characterizations are superior to the creators’ original intent, and that punching up their translations with dated references and memes is needed.

Their defense has not changed in decades: “we NEED to make these changes, the cultural gap is too big for a broader American audience to understand!” maybe they shouldn’t? Maybe it’s not for them. If they can’t adapt to another cultural context, they should stick to Star Wars slop or the MCU or whatever.
My thought about the stupid defense they always use is, if you're translating something, and your translation couldn't be re-translated back into the original language in a way the original creator would understand, you've fucking failed as a translator. Just using the Nagatoro example, my guess is the original Japanese phrase was "ikemen," which would mean a handsome guy, a smooth operator. You could reasonably translate "handsome guy" back to the Japanese "ikemen" without too much loss in meaning. "Gigachad" doesn't translate back into Japanese, because it's made-up English internet slang that derives from a specifically American meme. The author would have to look at his character saying "geega-chaddo," his own character saying something he doesn't understand. If I was an author, and I had to read a foreign-language Know Your Meme article to understand a translator's version of my own goddamn work, I would think the translator was either doing a gag dub or just a complete and total failure.

I miss the days when there was a thriving market for fansub groups. I don't know if there's a single active group that does more than rip the shitty official translations from Netflix or Crunchyroll anymore. Fansub groups were far from perfect. Coalguys was infamous for taking the piss with their translations, and I vaguely remember that people hated Commie Subs for some reason. But at least there were still decent groups out there putting out good translations. They could be autistic as hell, but even the worst among them weren't half as insufferable as the average current-day official localizer. Say what you will about Kaizoku-subs and the Great Autistic "Nakama" Debate of 2006, at least they were specifically trying to keep One Piece as Japanese as possible.

And I really miss when fansub groups would animate the OP lyrics syllable by syllable like a singalong. You never see that with a modern official translation. It's just a little touch, but little touches like that add up to a better product overall. Same with varying fonts and font colors, and the silly translator notes, and including official or fan-made eye-catches at the end of the episode. Every time I watch an official translation, which isn't often these days, I can't help thinking it's an inferior product to what people were making 15 years ago, for fun, for free.

I mentioned it in this thread beforehand but fansubbers still exist to some extent. Groups like 9volt and Zafkiel come to mind when it comes to the seasonals that I watch (Frieren, Urusei Yatsura, etc.). Groups like MTBB did so much typesetting work for shows like Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken that they had to release a version that's hardsubbed because of how much shit is encoded into the video (their notes and rationale as to why linked here).

I do agree with the general sentiment that fansubbing needs to come back and more people need to fansub popular modern anime. Large distributors such as Netflix and Crunchyroll are getting really fucking lazy when it comes to typesetting and general subtitle quality of life. Some anime that I have watched on Netflix don't bother subtitling signs, most companies don't bother subtitling openings (probably due to how prevalent the "skip opening" function is on most streaming services nowadays). The worst problem I've had as of recent would be the anime adaptation of Dead Dead Demon's Dedededestruction. For some genius reason, Crunchyroll or Ocean Studios, whoever is behind the distribution of this anime, decided that the only English subtitles would be dubtitles. There are no subtitles for the ORIGINAL JAPANESE TRACK of the anime, just subtitles for the ENGLISH DUB. This has led to the subtitles being horribly out of sync because the subtitles aren't for the Japanese audio track. Fortunately there's somebody who's working on a fansub.

I recently finished Bleach: TYBW, for reference I stopped watching the Bleach anime during the vampire arc and dropped the manga half way through the Fullbringer arc. These are just random thoughts I had while watching.
I don't really get the point of these random two Soul Reapers we start following.

I am not a fan of CGI in anime but this is done fairly well I suppose

The interaction with Ebern reminds why I like Ichigo as a character, he's not just Goku

Halibel all tied *chef's kiss*

I still can't believe no one has murdered Kurotsuchi is such a disappointment

I was surprised they killed off Byakuya, really raised the stakes and made the war more personal. Not surprised they didn't have the balls to go through with it.

Was Bleach always this violent? Cause I'm down for all the blood and death

Ichigo continues to be the most special and awesomest character ever

Yhwach talks about the original Captains being just bloody killers but seeing how the Quincies act I can't blame Yamato choosing them. It really seems like the Quincies had it coming

I'm not sure if I like how over the top evil the quincies are, I do like how they all have unique powers

Tite Kubo/Bleach is still the king of style and the music is still fantastic

The scene of Ichigo in the cage while he can hear the Soul Reaper getting butchered is perfectly brutal

RIP Rangiku's magnificent tits, but considering the bait and switch with Byakuya I'm sure Rangiku and Hitsugaya will be fine in the end

This sums up why I hate Kurotsuchi so much, it's not just he's an awful person but his intellect is all bullshit. How did he deduce the Quincies were moving through the shadows? Why didn't he tell anyone else? It couldn't have been not to reveal he knew because he Quincy proofed his lab which should have alerted the Quincies he was on to them. Going back to the beginning why didn't he tell anyone about the disturbance instead of just vanishing random villagers? He complains about bureaucracy but we never see it, would the head captain not speak to him without an appointment?

Now Kurotsuchi's bullshit drug. Does it literally send someone back in time or does it just mess with someone's perception? What's even the point of it? couldn't you just make a paralyze drug?

Lol the tranny is a gross perverted necrophile

Renji having to learn his sword's government name to access its full power is a lame way to give him a powerup but his new Bankai is cool so whatever

The Mask De Masculine and Äs Nödt are easily the peak fights.

I like the respect this gives Renji and doesn't just treat him like a jobber

Ichigo still continues to be the most special of special threats

I hope Yachiru is ok

The cosomolgy of the Bleach universe is fucking bizarre

Ichibei 's power seems like bullshit, can't wait to see how Kubo writes himself out of this corner

Gantz. Absolutely bonkers, but it has an infamous ending when it comes to anime. Soooooo just a heads up.
Anytime Gantz is mentioned, I feel obligated to mention Me~teru no Kimochi. Same author. It’s the funniest thing I’ve ever experienced. Shotgunned the whole thing in 3 hours and spent a solid hour cry-laughing at the end. I still don’t know if it was meant to be serious. To interest you, it’s the origin of this:

These are just random thoughts I had while watching.
6) Sucks that they didn’t stick with it but he was probably still too popular to stay dead, even whenever that arc came out in the manga.
7) The manga was always pretty hardcore, the anime significantly censored the blood and injuries. I remember Grimmjow straight up put his whole arm through Luppi before disintergrating his top half with cero and Szayel ate his minions, while in the anime he chomped on them as glowy purple light balls.
14) I don’t think Bleach ever had especially intelligent writing but I agree it has a million points in style. I don’t like Kurotsuchi’s uneven tone, he was like the token evil member they had to have around because he’s undispensible but then he spent a long, long time being a comedic sexual harassment clown and all-around troll, then I think it tried to return to his roots?
16) When I first read it I thought he was calling “her” a slut because of the “stinks of cum” thing but being able to smell the other guy’s ballsack or whatever it was is weirder. He’s right, and Giselle is freak, but it’s weird.

So the first images of the upcoming Lord of the Rings anime movie has been revealed, and I'm not gonna lie, I love the art style. The movie itself might end up being terrible, it's too early to say--but I'm legitimately shocked that instead of going with a more contemporary anime art style seen in every dime-a-dozen isekai anime, they went with something retro instead, and it looks very pretty.

I'm getting Arslan and Arion vibes from how the characters look.

>mildly excited, but also fearful

Tolkien and CS Lewis liked animation and had correspondence shitting on Disney for ruining old stories by not going full hog on the details. They should’ve done the actual Silmarillion, like Children of Hurin.

Wait, LOTR is getting an anime? Since when??
It was announced some time ago; it's going to be a film, produced by the rights-holder of the films, WB, so they have the license to use all the music and elements from the Peter Jackson movies (unlike Rings of Power). It's being directed by the guy who did Ghost In The Shell: Standalone Complex, and is being written by Phillipa Boyens, who was one of the two women who served as screenwriters for both the LOTR Trilogy and the Hobbit films.

Runtime of the film is 2 hr 10 min, which is pretty long for an anime film, especially one licensed and funded by a Western studio like WB. It's weird that they'd go all out for this, but resort to ugly-ass CG and cheap looking 2D animation for shit like Batman Ninja or Suicide Squad: Isekai.

Capeshit fans will watch everything (well, maybe not everything as capeshit fatigue is a thing) but they have a high tolerance for crap. After the embarrassing debacle of Rings of Power maybe someone at WB felt the need to guarantee at least basic quality to avoid tarnishing the brand.

Without sounding culture-warriorish, I wonder if there was truly a need to make the lead a "female warrior". Sure, the work may surprise me and toy around with the concept, but the Standard Female Protagonist thing is so overdone and if badly managed tiresome and boring (again, RoP and girlboss Galadriel is a golden example). But hey, redhead female in 2024? A welcome thing.

I wonder how they will adapt it properly too, the paragraphs of history Tolkien wrote are barely summaries. It's a war between Men and one where the Rohirrim (and Helm in particular) do great deeds but don't have a particular moral high ground, if I remember right.

Finished it yesterday, it's shit. I knew it would have to have an anime original ending, but the entire latter half just falls the fuck apart. Not just story-wise, the fights suffer too (and they weren't Madhouse-tier to begin with). The fight against the giant statues alone had some terrible CGI, and egregious "stretching" for time - and no amount of gore could save it. Then pretty much all the interesting characters die in one fight... Gantz goes from "Holy shit this is weird and interesting" to "This is a waste of time" by episode 20.

It's one of those shows which gets you in the door with an insane plot and a refreshing character or two, but once those things become routine - there's nothing of substance to keep you around. You can't really get invested in anything or anyone because the expectation is they will die before really establishing themselves. It feels like a template for modern depressive death wankfests like JJK... but worse, because JJK didn't have a girl in it whose sole job was to get her pussy licked by a dog then die after the MC stops simping after her. At least the MC didn't actually put his dick in the dog girl, and eventually gets laid by a far superior woman.

atleast they white.
For now. That might be just to get us in the door. I trust nothing these days. But, if the purpose built >Anglo-Saxon Mythology< Tolkien created for his people actually remains Anglo-Saxon, I will support it.
