Orcs and Goblins are linked in a lot of media and Orcs had rape undertones with half Orcs in DnD. Plus there is probably a fusion of Goblins with Japanese folklore monsters who were more rape happy, like the Kappa.
It comes with the territory, especially when the Japs get involved. This was common knowledge at one point I feel.
people casually tolerating murder and gore but being fazed by rape will never not be a sign of severe cognitive dissonance
He's not my friend anymore if that's any indication of said cognitive dissonance. Seriously, you're numb to a guy getting decapitated and getting run through SAW level traps, but when a story decides to get mature, give the hero actual motivation to hate the Goblins that slaughtered and raped his entire village including his sister, that's too much? Come on man.

I like the original Dragon Ball. Z has too much filler and tends to get ridiculous. GT at least had him turn back into a kid, but I do no like those character designs with the sharp lines. Reminds me of the Dr. Slump remake that looks just as bad. And you're right, the movies and specials are entertaining. I was not expecting to hear Maximum the Hormone do a song about Frieza.
Z does have a lot of filler, but Kai removes most of it and even speeds up certain scenes (like powerups), though I feel its dub is inferior. GT looks a bit "off" compared to Z for some reason but I still think it looks alright.

Yeah, that Frieza song was badass, it fits his resurrection scene super well. The History of Trunks & Bardock are probably the best of them all, I think.

It reminds me of modern Mortal Kombat, getting more and more gory and realistic looking, detailed in its excessive violence, but afraid to show some female skin unless it's shredded and ripped off her body. Literal Orwellian logic.

On S5 now, I love this show. You mention keywords and foreshadowing, and its all coming to fruition. After S3 we started to pay attention to every stupid technobabble phrase.

I think the shows strongest aspect is the pacing. Theres zero filler, every episode moves the plot forward in some way, and nothing outstays its welcome. We just got to the part in S5 where Carol returns in the form of the pseudo AI, and then drops the best song in the series so far without moving a single step. I am actually pretty sad its over after this season, but its clearly tying up loose ends from all the way back in S1. Noble Red has been the weakest villain team so far, they just get their asses kicked every encounter.

Carol's return was forshadowed with her 'demise' in GX (giving Elfnein her body, not vanishing), Elfnein's memory machine in AXZ and the AXZ ova's. That entire episode is a wonderful love letter to S3 and honestly helped its image retrospectively (GX has a reputation for being the weakest season).

You've got a real wild ride upcoming though, enjoy the end as it comes

Actually true. The violence in Goblin Slayer, Anime wise, is a lot tamer than say... Elfin Lied, but people freak out about goblin Slayer because it dares to say "yeah, people get raped by shit covered goblins who burn entire towns, did we mention this is the medieval era?". Its not unexpected, yet people's reaction to it is just so off-putting

Alright guys on a different note, I just finished MF Ghost episode 2 and it's already ridiculous even by Initial D standards. The MC has clearly been written as one of the over powered tropes. How can anyone believe a novice driver who's taking a stock Toyota 86 gen 1 with the crazy torque dip is beating other pro drivers in much faster cars like Porsches and BMW M4s on the first run of what is essentially a Japanese Nurburgring. Just ridiculous.

Biggest problem I have with rape in Goblin Slayer is that in universe no one cared. First several episodes of S1 are people making fun of Goblin Slayer for wasting his time on goblins; in universe goblins are a minor existential threat in a world with major existential threats... but the whole rape-based-procreation and successfully pillaging small villages thing really should make them register as at least as serious as the distant potential threats intermediate/advanced adventurers usually deal with.

Read Year One. Goblin Slayer (the OG series) is him after becoming silver. It hits harder why goblins are a threat and also why no one else wants to kill them- it's dirty, dangerous, and pays nothing

This might be a mistake but genuine question, is there anything redeeming about the original Dragon Ball if you didn't grow up with it?
I think the only bit of DB I've read/watched was the manga up to the first budokai tournament on a pirate site before it got 404d years ago, a bit of kai the used to air on Saturday mornings, and some of the recent movies.
The original Dragon Ball manga is a masterpiece. Some guy dumped it on /a/ and everyone was enjoying it far more than they thought they would.

I think everyone watching DBZ as a kid actually harms the way Dragon Ball is perceived because 1. the anime is pretty bad compared to the manga and 2. people say it's all nostalgia glasses, but when you read it again as a grown man you can tell how good Toriyama is. Especially the Saiyan and Namek arcs. There's a lot to unpack about those but for me it's as good at shonen can get.
And all of that without even bringing up the soul and charm of the universe and the nostalgia stuff (growing up with the Budokai and Tenkaichi games was a child's dream) that made it so important for people who aren't that much into anime.

Obviously I'm a fanboy still gushing over it but I think it makes sense. Super damaged the brand a lot.

The Philippine English dub was classic

Spending the entire 2010 summer reading Dragon Ball on a shady manga site(s) was one of the most satisfying things I've done. Loved everything about it, and I'm not a martial arts fan. The anime is still fun, but it suffers from what I call "Toei pacing" that that's why some anime watchers can't get into it.

If you were dumb enough to have Crunchyroll account, check your spam folder as you may be entitled to about $30 as a result of a settlement for a class action lawsuit.

I have a quality recommendation for you all. A smart show (albeit with extra exposition like all animu sadly) about Gambling and losing yourself to the thrill of cheating death, in a "meaning of life/Fight club sense". It's called Kaiji - Ultimate Survivor. I avoided the show for years because I typically judge books by their covers, but despite the utter shit quality of the character designs, the show turned out to be a hidden smash. It's by 2007 Madhouse so the suspenseful framing, pacing, and music are all DeathNote quality. The OP/ED are fantastic and lyrically fit the themes well...
...and by episode 5 you'll be thinking back to episode 1 going, "How the fuck did shit get so crazy? Damn Kaiji goes from bitch to badass quick. This is fucking incredible." Go watch it.

Kaiji is great. The related shows Akagi and the one about Tokugawa aren't as top tier as Kaiji imo. I believe Squid Game creators were influenced by Kaiji when they made that show for Netflix.

Akagi is a whole different beast. I think it's arguably even better, in a different way. It's more of a philosophical essay.

But really in 2023 you should have read at least 4 or 5 Fukumoto manga, starting with Kaiji and Kurosawa.

Legend has it Akagi and the old man are still playing death mahjong to this day.

Can't quote your other post, but you forgot to mention the fact that Kubo thought it would be a good idea to write a character that can make anything he imagines a reality (that's even, leaving out the detail that his design is a rehash of Yukio). What's even more baffling is that a giant axe just split him in half.
Meh, call it cope if you want, but the manga makes it pretty evident that usually Gremmy doesn't fight. He just shows up and whisks people out of existence. He's been imprisoned this entire time and everyone normally just gives him what he wants anyway. So the idea of being challenged never actually occurred to him. Kenpachi wins because he baits him into actually fighting him. Kubo does go out of his way to show us that Gremmy's powers take a lot of effort and concentration out of him, and he never bothered to actually test out what his limits are. Which conveniently the anime decided to cut out all of these details for its detriment, go figure.

So I never really minded Gremmy because the manga does go out of its way to provide a somewhat plausible explanation for why he loses. Plus, he exists in a vacuum anyway. If he were more of a major character I'd have an issue with him. As far as OP characters go there are far more egregious examples.

It explains why no one wants to do it, it doesn't explain why it isn't better compensated or seen as more necessary. You'd think in a world where humanity and friends are constantly at war with everything the constant pervasive threat to the food supply and everyone's wife/mother/sisters would punch higher than it does. Hell, they even juxtapose Goblin Slayer single handedly saving a village from 20+ rapegoblins against a bunch of adventurer teams pooling resources to raid a gold mine because a not-purple worm and a bunch of slimes took up residence. The big worm that eats rocks in a gold mine is wildly ignorable as far as threats go, even if everyone goes for the higher paying job they should be self aware enough to see that what Goblin Slayer was doing was probably more useful in the big picture.

Your point isn't wrong, but I see it as societal apathy. The goblins have just always been there. Like locusts. Even if you knock out a nest, more pop up. So I see it as just, people kinda gave up after a while. Goblin Slayer just didn't get the memo.
