But then you have something like Maria Holic, it's not out of print, it just recently had a BD release in NA, it's un-PC handling of LGBT themes and general bitchy sense of humor seems prime for modern meme culture, but yet, silence... (it was fairly popular at the time it was airing, but has been forgotten ever since)

Maria Holic's original manga fyi infamously triggered a lesbian yuri blogger to tears, it's a funny series that deserves to be rediscovered.

It's remembered for this

When in doubt about the reason for a show's popularity the answer is simple, it's the girls.
Guys definitely hold a candle for waifus longer than women do, does anyone still give a shit about Gravitation? Hetailia? Maybe Ouran is still fondly remembered, but for the most part it seems like fujos are more fickle, Twilight and 50 Shades of Grey are some western examples.

I have to laugh at thots I see getting tattoos of anime guys, are you even gonna care decades from now?

Cultural osmosis must've finally caught up to them that they are getting urges to watch the source of whatever memes they come across, is my guess.

Could also be that they may be getting tired of the isekai swamp that they're turning to the past for something, anything worthwhile, and realizing there's something appealing to these 20-year-old anime. Baby steps.
I tend to forget since I never watch them the over 9000 isekais, no wonder zoom zooms are starting to look backwards.

A little birdy once told me that some younger fans say they refuse to watch anything older than 2013, I'm glad if people are realizing how insane that is.

Like I said, it was popular at time, but has been forgotten since.

Matsurika is one of my favorite character designs though, I mean grey hair+pigtails+maid outfit+snarky, mean spirited attitude? Awesome.

I'm pretty sure in the fansubs she used the term "tranny" too which I'm sure the 2021 release changed.

Generally something has to still be putting out content to remain relevant and both the Maria Holic animes and manga ended a while ago, but that's my point, these other series I've mentioned have either been over with (or on hiatus) for a while too, yet are still popular.

On a side note, Konata is another character who's still popular, yet you rarely see Haruhi, imagine the salt that would have caused in 2008 to know that lmao.

Free! Was the big Fujo show when I was into anime, and I've not seen it referenced in years.

Finally finished Gun x Sword after all these years. Fun show with some pretty character designs, though I still need to chew on the ending for a bit 'cause it feels rushed to me.

My favorite thing is the foil dynamic between Van and Ray, in which although the two of them have a common goal, the way each gets their revenge is different. There's also a strange common link with The Claw, too, in that all three of them have been driven insane, but only one of them remains mad the entire time. It's weird, too, like Claw's goals were nuts, but he was just so genuine that I kinda felt bad for him. Think it helps Kirk Thornton portrayed him so masterfully, like duuuuude, Kirk's such a good actor.

I always thought Lucky Star was better than Azumanga Daioh to be honest.

Admittedly, I recall only watching Azumanga because people said it was like Lucky Star... but I got bored after two episodes.
I had the exact opposite experience personally. But that was years and years ago. I liked Lucky Star's art style, but I couldn't get into it past the first couple of episodes.

I guess I like Azumanga mostly because I adore its sister series, Yotsuba&!. Not that Azumanga wasn't a great series (it was in my opinion) but the latter resonated with me on a much deeper level.

But yeah, Azumanga has always been a cultural mainstay on the internet. You see Osaka and Chiyo-Chan's dad practically everywhere. And it manages to maintain that middle ground between being "old" but not "too old" and it helped popularized the Moe style that's so common and popular to this day.

It also has a slight bit of Yuri teasing between Sakaki and Kaorin which zoomers love to gobble up.

Gravitation? Hetailia?
Yes? Hell, one of the reason why Tiger and Bunny got another season what, more than a decade later?
Hetalia too, got a season fairly recently even though its been basically dead outside fan stuff. Back in the day it got constant holiday event comics, it was nice.

It's more that outside fujo circles, where are people really going to talk about it?
Osomatsu, Haikyuu, and weirdly stuff like Hyouka and SAO.
People are still waiting on that Yuri on Ice movie... frankly, it'd probably be better if more did move on.

Does anyone know how old shows like Serial Experiments Lain, Azumanga Daioh and Black Lagoon got so popular with zoomers?

Most 00s anime is forgotten, even if it was popular at the time, but then you have Azumanga and Black Lagoon, which are zoomer favorites despite them shunning most anime from that decade, how did that start?

A couple of other random ones from the 90s that I see referenced often are Golden Boy and Gunsmith Cats.

Azumanga's popularity might have something to do with it's influence on early meme culture and it still has that meme "stickiness" to it, but while these are all good animes, it's not clear to me why they get remembered when other stuff that's just as good doesn't.

And I'm not talking about evergreen franchises like DBZ, Naruto, JoJo, Eva etc, these are all things that have been over with for years or even decades, so how did they wind up being remembered and other things forgotten?
How exactly do you know the younger generation are getting into those shows you mentioned as opposed to say Code Geass, Fullmetal Alchemist, Inuyasha, One Piece, Bleach, etc?

Agreed. Sk8 infinity is another one of those things that seems forgotten in mainstream anime spaces but among groups that were originally into that anime to begin with people still talk about it. I saw there's a digital con for fujoshi being prepared where the english voice actor of the sk8 villain is a guest of honor.

Any show that makes you sympathize with a villain who wants to more or less kill everyone is going to be a good show. I remember watching it a while back and it was an absolute blast.

I've heard the rest of the Science;Adventure adaptations are pretty bad because they were hoping another one would take off and become a phenomenon like S;G did and none of the rest even came close so they got cut short. Haven't watched them myself so I can't comment personally but I'm very much in the 'The VNs are better' crowd lol, even if S;G is still pretty great in anime form
I would say that the Robotics;Notes adaption is done decently well (Although nowhere near the level as SG).
I also really enjoyed the VN, which I believe is pretty underrated. DaSH is pretty good too but it's more like Love Chu Chu or MDE than true sequel, which I've seen put off a lot of people who went in with the expectation of it being a true continuation of the story.
Also all the Sci;Adv games are on sale on Steam right now if anyone is interested in picking them up.

Maria Holic is prime for tranny seething. God damn I miss 2000's Shaft, Madoka and Bakemonogatari killed the studio creatively.

I have no idea what the hell happened to code geass over the last decade. But they really dropped the ball hard with the terminal disease sounding “genesic re;code” and that shitty R3 movie even the zoomers disavowed.

All they had to do was follow the damn train and make an R3 anime season without lelouch with new characters coming up after the old cast trying to maintain the peace he sacrificed himself for and they fought so hard to achieve.

Then reveal lelouch was alive at the very end because geass and running off with CC.

This is very true. Anime made before 2012 and after 2012 might as well be two different genres, unless its something very popular made in the past, zoomers refuse to watch it. It's a shame because the early 2000s has probably the best streak of anime period. I've been going back to watch shows from the era and I never realized how stacked of a decade it was.

The VN is definitely good, I haven't disliked any of them, I've just been chasing the dragon of S;G/0 and none have lived up to it hehe. Wasn't aware of that about DaSH, but I don't really have a problem with that.

Good call on the VNs being on sale atm, pretty much all the weeb stuff on my steam wishlist is on sale but I already own all the SA games and it didn't occur to me that they'd probably be on sale as well or I would have shilled them harder when recommending them lol

Chinese cat poison detective got an anime! Ngl, I am kind of excited.

After watching Raven of the Inner Palace, I'm all for more stories with Chinese settings.

The character designs by Masakazu Katsura were the the main attraction for me.

Did anyone play the Steins;Gate dating sim? I know there was some nonsense around the translation due to Ruka.
