Oh, I know the movie yer talking about, it was about a rich guy who was the inspiration for James Bond going after this submarine made of gold and platinum, while the bad guy was the leader of this...I wanna say remnants of a Nazi group?
I want to say that one is "Pursuit of Harimao's Treasure" but I'll have to double-check.

Didn't they try to bring back an "older" sort of style with the new one, Lupin Zero?
How did that one turn out?View attachment 4526709

Having watched about 4 episodes (because I watch most seasonals with a group and we just haven't got around to it) I'd say it's pretty good. They do a good job with it and play a lot of songs from Part 1 of Lupin. They try to put this filter on the show to make it look older but it comes off like a wonky DVD rip of an early 2000s anime.
I'm not an expert on Lupin so correct me if I'm wrong: but from what I've been told he's a borderline sex pest in the original manga so technically his gentlemanly behaviour around a young girl in Castle of cagliostro is kind of woke-ifying him even all that time ago.
I'm not the biggest Lupin guy out there but my friends gave me the lowdown on how that works. There are different jackets that Lupin wears that determine how his personality is. The one in Castle wears a green jacket and is most associated with Hayao Miyazaki. Red jacket Lupin is a lot closer to the original manga iirc.

Your friend needs to do more research.

The idea that the jacket colors are related to his portrayal is a fan theory, and the idea that red = manga accurate is flat-out wrong. I mean Red is what he wore in the crossover with Detective Conan.

EDIT: Found--of all things--a reddit post that goes into more deets. Copy-pasting it here:

It's mainly a design thing. Originally it was the red jacket and still is the most used. Yasuo Otsuka who worked on Part 1 changed it from red to green due to color TVs at the time had problems with reds bleeding on screen and until Return of Pycal was his thing. Pink Jacket was only because of a compromise, Yuzo Aoki wanted him to have a white jacket but the network made it pink because they didn't want a red jacket (this was because Part II was NTV while Part III was YTV, despite technically being the same company there were company politics at the time). I don't know the story of Blue Jacket but I assume that it was a Sega thing, since Sega owns TMS and is their trademark color. There was also a white jacket, a yellow jacket (briefly in the manga, was considered for Voyage to Danger) and a black jacket.

The personality thing at first seems logical until you realise that Green Jacket can be family friendly (Castle of Cagliostro, Fuma Conspiracy, Miyazaki Part 1) or edgy (early Part 1, Fujiko Mine). Part 5 tried to do something like that with the Pink Jacket being the wacky episode, Red Jacket to be more adventurous and the Green Jacket to be serious.

As for Green vs Red, that was an anniversary piece to celebrate 40 years of the series.

Fuck.

I hope Miura got Isekai'd there, he deserves it.

Pretty much. Shows like to change the jacket and the personality to fit the director's vision

So a Netflix exec asked "hey how can I shit on two great mangaka at the same time?"....
I was somewhat expecting this because the anime has been in production for 6 god damn years and it was a year or two ago that some off hand comment about struggling to find a network to air it was a red flag signaling one of the streaming sites was gonna scoop it up a slap an original on it.

Edit: *sigh*
Not as bad as I feared but not as good as I hoped

Looks alright to me aside from the CG city shit, and I dunno if Gesicht really needed rocket feet. But being a teaser, I think certain things like his terminator vision being added might just be to make it flow better; I'd be surprised if that's actually in the final scene (because he already knew to go look under the flower field; he wasn't scanning for anything) so maybe this isn't fully representative.

I guess I should finally read Pluto. All I know is its a retelling of an Astro Boy story but which focuses on Pluto instead of Astro.

I just pray it doesnt suck so Netflix is willing to bankroll a 20th century boys anime, my man Urasawa deserves better

It's from the perspective of Germany's finest robot detective, who instead of being an aryan man is basically Golden Homer only covered with guns and shows up for about three pages in the original.

So, question.

A long time ago I owned the DVD set for Monster, which only had the first fifteen episodes. They never released more on DVD so I wound up not finishing the series ever.

Now I'm thinking of picking it back up, but.... basically, is it okay to experience the story entirely through the anime or should I read the manga instead? These days I prefer to do only one or the other, I don't have time for both.

The anime is very faithful to the manga a very rare case of it from back of the days where studios just pissed in the sources for money

Edit: a friend of mine just reported me than the 74 episodes are on Netflix now woldwide

I still argue the manga is slightly better due to pacing issues but as said above it's a faithful 1 to 1 adaptation.
Probably not a coincidence monster was added to Netflix come to think of it, who knows maybe Keaton and Yawara will be added as well.

My gosh. Steins gate and Steins Gate 0 slap. Finished today, in a intense week long session after my friend showed me the first 5 episodes. Watched to ep23, detoured to 0 as I was told, then to ep 24. I have to say, I want more even though the story is masterfully complete. I loved all of them, I loved their stories, and both shows built up not only their characters, but what the hell Okarin was fighting for.

It didn't feel like anime; it had anime tropes to be sure, but it felt like college kids way over their heads. Every relationship felt real and earned, and even when comparing to similar shows with time travel elements such as Re Zero, it doesn't even come close. Is this what ash in my mouth feels like?

I like this fugitive arc in Bungou stray dogs. It's the type of setup that's perfect for messing with the status quo and showing different sides of the main characters. This episode also reminded me that part of the reason I'm into this series is cause I enjoy seeing how all the different Fate-tier chuuni superpowers interact with each other.

Maybe I should give Jojo a chance at some point because I heard that it also revolves around characters figuring out each other's chuuni superpowers and how to actually deal with them. It's just that I have a hard time starting a franchise that already has so much content to catch up on.

Steins;Gate is part of the Science Adventure series of visual novels (most of which have anime adaptations) so if you want more you might want to look into that. I wouldn't expect them to live up to Steins;Gate though. You might have to wait for the adaptation of the new Steins;Gate VN that has been in the works for a while to get your fix.

So, watching 6th episode of Stampede, and fuck me this anime is a mess. Alright, so we get into Wolfwoods backstory how he was part of the orphanage where he met Livio, then got taken by the strange scientist guy and experimented on (who turns out is also a pastor, fuckin' really?). Suddenly as he was about to escape the facility, they introduce fucking Legato (wow, seriously? We're halfway through this shit and just NOW you introduce this fucker?) who apparently has psychic powers, also Eye of Michael apparently is IN this anime, but instead of being a cult that worships plants, they just worship Knives. Also, apparently, Wolfwood can chug those regeneration drugs without any problems, unlike how it was in the manga. Oh and there doesn't seem to be a hint of Livio having a split personality, infact through the whole fight he acts like a brainwashed robot (who can apparently regenerate on his own without the drugs).

I will wait as long as it takes, it's risen to near the top of my favorite list in near a week. It's been such a rush absorbing all of it, so masterfully crafted. Looking at it, as an adaption of a VN from 2009, it's shocking how much the world has changed. They were talking about fucking 2chan on live television in 2011! Not to mention they weren't just throwing tits in your face every five seconds because they expected the audience to think. The romance between Okarin and Kurisu actually felt real, it wasnt overtly horny, it just was, and it was beautiful. I want to go back.
