You're not missing much. Even with the "shock and fanservice", the characters are fucking awful and the plot is dumb. I like Nana Mizuki, but this is not one of her better roles.

It's a complete trainwreck of a show, completely illogical, the developments are retarded, the characters are dumb and the fanservice is ludicrous, the graphics are barely serviceable and the designs mediocre.

I watched it with a pal in a half-drunken haze and we enjoyed it immensely: it's a great trainwreck. Everything is built for shock value, sleaze or terrible comedy, the Main Evil Guy is some kind of otaku parody that plays straight hentai memes and Ange herself is a magnificent cunt that tells people to go fuck themselves and die at every occasion. And I have the suspicion (born from the fact that the authors themselves make fun of the episodes and plotholes in the previews) that they knew they were building a wreck and enjoyed themselves as much as they could. How can I justify the kamikaze survival shenanigans or the little sister whipping naked half-dragons?

Go in expecting the worst and you'll find some good nuggets of fun.

It's cute so far. Like the others I was wondering what the Made in Abyss connection was beyond a cosmetic similarity, then I got to episode 3 where they decide to delve into a fucking abyss.

I know Square Enix has an "ethics department" but I'm guessing they are complying with Apple's rules regarding what is allowed on their service. Sentai/HIDIVE used to have uncensored versions of their shows on the Apple and PS4 app, but both were taken down due to the content. Now HIDIVE is back up on the Apple store (but not on PlayStation) and a lot of the mature shows are missing. I'm not sure why the ridiculous censorship is applied to the manga considering how manga aggregator apps such as Manga Fox and MReader have lots of uncensored manga and they're are easily available to download from the ios store. I'm guessing this is why certain titles such as Ayakashi Triangle had chapters skipped over in the Manga Plus app.

Try Rin: Daughters of Mnemosyne if you haven't given that a chance. It has action, horror, sci-fi and supernatural elements along with some gore. There's some sex in it but mostly lesbian stuff from what I recall.

Seems like Apple is pretty lax about enforcement of their app ToS when political forces aren't involved. Tumblr had to get to the point of having outright CP on their app before Apple shut them down. I think a lot of this in coming internally from Squenix themselves.

That's the only way this would make sense to me as well. It reminds me of how some discord servers have a bot named Clyde that automatically prevents you from uploading images that it thinks contains nudity, but in practice it can also trigger on stuff that's no big deal.

Cross Ange is pretty entertaining. It's kind of the lesser of the three late 2000s/early 2010s Sunrise trainwrecks, but it's enjoyable. The villain is really smarmy and scummy, the main cast is pretty fun and there's some decent fight scenes. The music is really good too, but most things Fukuda has a hand in have good music. It's worth a watch. It's got a lot of neat little easter eggs and references in there too if you're a mecha fan.
 
Cross Ange was dumb fun (but it's actually consistent, so it doesn't feel like bullshit comes out of nowhere), and is probably one of the last good modern dubs out there, for being Sentai Filmworks. Only thing that bothers me about it is the Barbie doll anatomy, not a nipple to be seen even though everyone has like the same cup size.

Yeah but these aren't exactly simultaneous events, there's a timeline here. Examples of Japanese corpos overcompensating for Western insanity on things they themselves don't traditionally give a shit about have been mounting drastically recently, while the big historical example Nintendo set is something you can only view retrospectivly as a cynical and wise strategic policy, especially now that they're less restrictive than fucking Sony. Meanwhile Apple feel more vulnerable within their own market realm than they maybe ever have been, which also has the knock-on effect of opening them up to consumer criticism. Not that they're the originator of puritanical sentiment, but they're major gatekeeper and valuable target if they can be neutralised somehow.

I dunno, I'm just at the point of viewing literally everything as a corporate conspiracy, and every single Japanese publisher as a yakuza front. So it's impossible to take anything at face value (particularly if it is too cartoonlishly stupid to believe on its face anyway). It's also funnier.
