I finished Cross Ange not that long ago, but I'm always up for more mecha recommendations. I'll look into it.I recommend watching Gear Fighter Dendou than Cross Ange.
I'm convinced they had no idea what they were doing yet somehow stumbled on utter gold in the first season. The second season took itself too seriously even though having the villains being the adrenochrome-drinking bankers QAnon warned us about is pretty amusing. If you liked the insanity that is Cross Ange, then I do recommend checking out the previous crazy mecha show Sunrise made the year before, that being Valvrave The Liberator.
Though I must warn you that the second half is pretty bad compared to the former. But still, it also has one of the best heroines that the studio has ever made, along with it basically them giving zero rips and just going balls-to-the-wall in terms of craziness, so I can't say I wasn't entertained by it (shame that they wasted said heroine in the second half).
Valvrave was really good, but I really wish they had a third season. They were setting up some interesting plot threads and I wanted to see L-elf go overlord everybody's ass.I'm convinced they had no idea what they were doing yet somehow stumbled on utter gold in the first season. Apparently, they were planning for more seasons, but instead had to cut the series short due to backlash from the first half. You can definitely see a difference between how the second half was previewed vs how it actually turned out.Valvrave was really good, but I really wish they had a third season. There are only 12 episodes for S2, and manga just finishes the golden city arc around late last year - early this year. Since manga chapter updates are kinda slow, the whole golden/ilblu (Iruburu) village arc (chapter 39 to 60) last for like 4-5 years.Does anyone have any apprehension about s2 of made in abyss. Season 1 spanned so many chapters, yet season 2 will probably only be covering golden city and *maybe* the fleet arc. Not enough content.
I thought Crest of the Stars was kind of 6-7/10 on rewatch but Banner of the Stars is better. Much larger cast of smug autistic space elves and more world building regarding Smug Autistic Space Elf culture.I started watching a series called Crest of the Stars recently. It's an older series and kind of obscure for reasons I can sort of understand. Two episodes in and it appears to be a far future sci-fi centered around diplomatic relations between humans and a splinter empire of abhumans who adapted themselves via gene editing to function better in space and live longer; this gene editing just so happens to make them look like space elves.
The series has that cozy early aughts feel to it and the opening feels like something straight out of Star Trek.
https://youtube.com/watch?v=BB0C5V8OPVIThe showrunners were surprisingly creative with this series; they went so deep into world building that they actually generated a new language which you will hear quite frequently. I would also note that they either intentionally or unintentionally did a good job in making the space elves look alien. There's a number of things that are just off about the designs of their faces. Maybe it's just this character but this is only the second one that shows up.

It could just be nostalgia for older anime but this series is actually kind of pulling me in.

The problem with trainwreck shows like Cross Ange and Valvrave (or Valvrape as it ended up being known as lol) is the shows practically live and die by having people react to them week by week. It might be me but I feel the only trainwreck that stands up on its own is Code Geass. If you liked the insanity that is Cross Ange, then I do recommend checking out the previous crazy mecha show Sunrise made the year before, that being Valvrave The Liberator.
It was based on a series of books and the author was insanely creative in terms of worldbuilding like how he portrayed space combat and of course that language. But it's a very slow-paced show and there's some moments that feel incredibly self-indulgent.I started watching a series called Crest of the Stars recently. Crest of the Stars is fantastic (doubly so for the sequel Banner of the Stars), especially if you have a love of space opera in general. It's similar to LOTGH in being a slow build, but centers more on interpersonal dynamics than grand sweeping political narrative. Plus Lafiel is cute as a button and makes for a nice kuudere due to her innate superiority complex courtesy of upbringing. It's why I loved the last arc of Crest in particular where Lafiel and Jinto are stuck on a planet and trying to evade capture, for all the stakes it's very comfy and helps highlight just how different Lafiel and the Abh are.I started watching a series called Crest of the Stars recently. You and me both. I really wish we could get shows and stories like this again, but the west went woke and complexity and nuance don't make Japanese production committees cash when moeblob, isekai, and hyper-specific cookie cutter light novel plots are all the rage.I wish they still made shows like this. You'd never see something like this get made in this day and age.
This was that era where Sunrise was trying to one-up Code Geass with every single new mecha show they produced. Valvrave and Cross Ange are arguably the two most blatant examples, due to just how off the rails they are.The problem with trainwreck shows like Cross Ange and Valvrave (or Valvrape as it ended up being known as lol) is the shows practically live and die by having people react to them week by week. All that said Mr. Ham Egg Eru Erfu is best girl, give it a shot.
