Beautiful Dreamer is my favorite Mamoru Oshii film. I can't believe how fantastic this movie was. It made the 99 episodes of UY that I watched beforehand well worth it, not that those episodes were bad themselves. This shit is kino.

I will say, 3.0 and 3+4 suffered immensely from not being released back to back as was originally intended. 3's nastiness was clearly intended to lead right into 3+4's reconstruction. Unfortunately we got a nearly decade long time gap presumably due to Anno getting burnout. The nuance of it was somewhat mishandled. However, the overarching theme seemed largely intact. The way forward is never easy and for every one victory you may get slapped with seemingly disproportionate negative consequences. At times, it may feel like every one step forward heralds two steps back. But ultimately, if you persist and keep moving forward, you will reach something resembling your goal. It may not be exactly what you envisioned, but that's life. Maybe I'm just going easy on it because of nostalgia and the feeling of closure it offered, but ultimately I found it compelling.
We are all, myself included, retarded for calling Eva 3.0+1.0 by that name instead of just saying "4"

A series that caught my eye not long ago was a title that parodies trapped in another world stories and other stock characters in both manga and another medium. In a fantasy world, a teen wizard desperate to regain her family's lost standing needs to hire a professional adventurer to help with her magical research. Her father was defeated in a wizard duel, losing the title of "Royal Wand" and his opponent became the Royal Family's official wizard, and while she still lives in a mansion banished far from the capital city it's just her and her manservant. The depletion of the family coffers that came with the drop in status means she can't afford to hire a official A-Class adventurer as an aide and so is holding auditions for B-Classers. In one case, the candidates are asked to see if they can tackle a golem. Tougo Asagaki, our iseaki'ed protagonist thinks there's a monster rampaging, so he does what he always used to do back on Earth in such a case.

30+ chapters into Hinamatsuri and Hina is still a massive brat that deserves all the salmon roe. Anzu adjusting to not being homeless is melting my heart.

I don't drop a whole lot of anime... well, I don't start a lot either but up until recently I've finished every one I started. I started Miss Kobayasi's Dragon Maid and Keep Your Hands Off Eizuken because I watched Nagatoro and Uzaki-chan and found them both enjoyable so I figured I'd see how I felt about more slice-of-life stuff, but it turns out I don't really like the genre as a whole so I dropped both of those a few episodes in.

However, what I really feel more surprised about is that I decided to check out Toppa Gurren Lagann as it's one that seems to have held appeal over the years in terms of popularity, but it just didn't click with me. I gave it more episodes than the others at 6 or 7 but at that point it's episodic format was wearing on me and I just wasn't interested in the story or characters. I know through years of internet osmosis the story scale gets expanded eventually, but the elements leading up to it don't seem solid to me. Maybe I'll try it again sometime, but I really thought it'd grab me more.
