I know through years of internet osmosis the story scale gets expanded eventually, but the elements leading up to it don't seem solid to me. Maybe I'll try it again sometime, but I really thought it'd grab me more.

Eh I'll be honest regarding Gurren Lagann...

I preferred the pre time-skip episodes but still wasn't that impressed with the show in general. I watched Kill La Kill not too long after and enjoyed that show more.

When I was new to anime, I watched both TTGL and the Getter Robo OVAs around the same time and just thought TTGL was a tribute to it and other mecha shows (mostly Gundam since at times Simon sure does act like Amuro and Rossiu acts like the typical obstructive government asshole common in Gundam). Even when I came back to it again after reading the Getter Robo manga (which hammers the "evolution" theme way more than any of the OVAs) I thought the same thing, since it takes a similar concept and goes in a different direction and has a different approach.

i cant decide if i liked the pre-skip episodes or the movie more. i think they both good for different reasons.

as for kill la kill, i watched years ago and liked it. however, i cant seem to remember why i liked it. or the show for that matter.

different strokes for different folks. for example konosuba is popular and I even got a few mates raving about it, but that kind of humor simply doesn't work for me.

as for slice of life, it's easy to cram everything under that genre since it's broad af, but not everything is the same. comic girls is one of my favorite anime and as moeshit as it gets, meanwhile I couldn't finish takagi-san since it's basically the same every time with the protag getting dunked on which is just boring for me, both technically count as SoL.
if you liked nagatoro and uzaki, the rom-com stuff might be more your thing (nothing wrong with it I like that shit too, and it's not really something you find in the west anymore unless you go full HAM with hallmark movies). aharen-san is currently airing (although I wouldn't necessarily call that romantic), my dress-up darling from winter this year, some of doga kobo's (nozaki-kun, engaged to the unidentified S2 never ever, maybe even all in with tadakoi), blend s etc. might even be worth to check out one of the classics like k-on (no romance but the definition of SOL) or other kyoani stuff like chuunibyo. or maybe go in the other direction with some "haremshit" like 5toubun, bokuben or saekano oreimo if you want to rage hard. there's also nisekoi and toradora but haven't watched them yet.

Yeah pre-timeskip was much more fun for Gurren Lagann, the timeskip stuff is really boring until they actually go in space.

Kill la Kill was more enjoyable throughout and honestly had much better characters in comparison to Gurren Lagann, whose characters range from shit to pretty cool with no in-between.
 
Lets be real, if he can stomach those early episodes post-time skip (around 17), he can finish the series.
those episodes were shit (even when I agree with Rossiu)

Lol, Shin Change Getter itself is a big homage to Ken Ishikawa's works as per usual by Imagawa (and he even left the project)

Nisekoi for me was an infuriating show for me as I watched all of Season 1 (I forget if I did S2) and nothing romantic really happened, just superficial harem stuff. That's probably the only show I watched all the episodes of hoping for something while being unfulfilled.
 
The coolest thing about TTGL has to be Libera Me From Hell. It’s the juxtaposition of opera and rap, acceptance in the face of death against the rebellious nature of man declaring that he will overcome that limitation and it perfectly encapsulates the show’s original intended ending. According to the team who created TTGL the original ending was supposed to be Simone causing Spiral Nemesis and ultimately destroying the universe. In that sense opera is the correct path and yet the show would have us idealize the self destructive style of rap which seeks to achieve something beyond it means without concern for the consequences that may be incurred. Through the song each style has its moments, opera swelling above the rap and vice versa as the two ideas battle for supremacy. It’s classic Old vs New done in a unique way. Absolutely beautiful.

As a testament to how awesome "Libera Me From Hell" is, it's still great even when /a/ sang it since Opera Dude carried it.

Everyone raves about Gurren Lagann but what about Sunabouzu? That's also a great adventure series.

OP for Kiznaiver instantly came to mind, I recall it being 6/10 but I also remember almost nothing about it except that the OP was pretty cool and it definitely didn't live up to it.
