The best Fate adaptations are really Zero (really only issue is certain backstories being cut, gore, and an autistic edgy inner monologue about hamburgers), Case Files, and the more slice of life spin-offs.
It also didn’t help that in Unlimited Blade Works, Nasu didn’t want Shirou to express his feelings openly in that adaptation but rather through facial expressions. Like Nasu is a good writer but there are times he’s completely stupid and anytime he makes changes to an anime adaptation of his work is a definite highlight of some stupidity he has done. The problem with Fate series anime adaptations, and pretty much all VN and light novel adaptations I imagine, is that there's always going to be characterisation that can't be carried over into anime form cause it's just a different medium. For example there's a part in the VN where Shirou thinks to himself he doesn't have the right to enjoy a fun trip to the shopping district because of his PTSD but in anime form they can't just make him inner monologue those sort of moments all the time.
