Texhnolyze is a really weird series in my mind, not just because of the subject matter, but that overall I think it has a very positive ending for the MC even with what happens. If I was to compare it to anything it'd be like Bladerunner 2049 with K's character (and fate).I was watching technolyze for the fist time about 2 months ago but I had to stop by episode 20 because it was simply too damn depressing, It was really week made and entertaining but fuck me is it relentlessly dreary and grimdark, I’m thinking of going back to the series but I don’t know if the entertainment will outweigh the emotional costs, does it at least have a bittersweet ending?
At first I also saw it as a very downer ending, but having sat to think about the series after a while I think how Ichise went out was probably with a feeling of contentness for the first time since the series started. For most of the series he simply follows what other people tell him to do, never really having a 'purpose' to serve or really making his own choices (he kinda just wanders around to hear people talk about their own philosophies). In the end he decided what he was going to do and went out on his own terms not by anyone elses. None of the deep psychological discussions on the meaning of life meant anything to him nor does the fate of humanity as a whole really matter either, but him finding his own 'way' as it were. I mean he even dies with a faint smile on his face after 'accomplishing' his goal, he had found his own purpose and meaning at his death. He wasn't just some rabid dog looking for a place to die.
