I still think the lack of computer usage in Japan plays a part in why it is CGI (TV) anime looks wonky. They've only began incorporating it more since the late-2000s (Gonzo's spirit is basically laughing at everyone), but they've adopted shortcuts such as mo-cap because of time crunches. If animators would have the proper time (and treatment) to work with CGI, they'd be able to polish it. Out-sourcing may also be hurting quality, other studios may be just as far behind in CGI as with Japanese studios and so they're all practically just learning it as they go.

I do feel like there's a future to be had in CG anime, but the same shortcuts that worked with cel/digitally-animated shows aren't working out, and the quicker they realize this, the better.

Asia in general has a rather limited CGI presence and outside a few companies that can pull 3D/2D animation combination semi-effectively like Rough Draft and Digital eMation and some full CGI studios like Technicolor India, CGCG and Digital Frontier, there isn't many options when it comes to decent to good CGI in the Asias.

Sure you got some studios in Japan that can do CGI (Graphinica and Asahi Production both spring to mind right away, but they're more jack-of-all-trades animation/post-production houses), but outside of DF, Orange and Shirogumi, most of them are mixed at best and poor at worst.

I saw on Twitter last week that there was a WataMote-related announcement slated for this week. I didn't want to mention it here as I didn't want to give anyone any false hope that season 2 of the anime would finally be announced only to find out that it's another fan convention.

So what is the announcement? An anthology novel which I think will feature multiple authors. It's authorized by Nico Tanigawa and Square-Enix though I don't know if Nico themselves will be doing any of the writing nor do I know if any of it will be considered "canon" to the manga timeline. If this novel anthology could flesh out the backgrounds of important characters like Yuri Tamura whose pre-Kyoto field trip life is still mostly a mystery to readers, it might be interesting whether or not any of it is canon.

Sorry but fuck 3DCG. It always looks like shit to me. I only accept it in small doses and it makes me sad we're getting a GitS 3D. They did do mocap.

The whole thing looks like hot garbage. And the Major looking different is fine. But the animation style is trash.

Yeah but, like my brother just pointed out, it doesn't look anywhere near as bad as Berserk (2016). I still share a similar sentiment. Really tired of the CG looking anime. Hek, even the animation in SAC I thought was just passable. I never did accept the whole cheaper animation/style in the early 2000s.

On another note, why do we even need another GITS? It's only been a few years since Arise ended. Why another GITS so soon?

Why not? Arise was just an OVA with a slightly modified TV retelling that was inferior to the OVA and the live action movie... less said about that the better. It's I.G's babby, they can do whatever they want for the money. I'm just wondering why they're doing a full CGI series when traditionally it's been 2D/3D since the very beginning.

At the time what was impressive was how much more the colors popped with those early digipaint shows, but as time has gone on and older cel shows have been remastered into HD and digipaint technology has advanced, a lot of those 2000s shows are left looking pretty dated.

Although digital painting has been a thing since the late-90s (was mostly pretty sparse), this is why I liken the early-to-mid-2000s as the awkward tween years for digital anime. Studio Pierrot was the most hit hard in this time period.

So hey, anyone remember this 4koma that only had a few pages made but got a bit of a fan following?

Guess what’s suddenly had three updates this month after about a year of nothing?

Because more GitS is always awesome. Except this. This looks like it was vomited out of a PS2 dev console.

My main problem with 'Arise' is like its a five hour origin story. You don't need to go THAT deep. I want to see more of the Major and the Squad in action. And the TV version of Arise is all sorts of fucked up, you have to watch the movies.

Its probably because Netflix is paying and a lot of their anime is 3D/CG garbage. I seriously think they're scared to do a straight up, normal looking anime. Every time I see a Netflix 'anime' its always in this weird style. Its continuing in the tradition of Netflix not butting the fuck out. Just fucking do a well drawn animated one.

Normies aren't going to flock to anime because they watch like 3 of them and have no idea about anything else, nor are they really interested. I mean, Polygon called Dr. Stone an Isekai for fuck's sake. They've got no clue what they're talking about and can only handle pedestrian shit like MHA. The only thing I see normie anime 'fans' talking bitching about are anime tits. So I really don't care if Netflix continues to fail at making anime. The less people interested, the better. Just don't fuck up shit I like.

Speaking personally I find a charm to most 2000s era anime, that's my personal peak nostalgic period for it.

But objectively yeah, a lot of it looks worse than stuff that came a few years before, like say Cowboy Bebop, or worse than stuff that came after.

I think one of the first anime TV series of the digital era that could really go toe to toe with anything in the past visual wise was Baccano!, that was a beautiful looking series.

I never did see any of the Arise movies, tell me, was it the same continuity as Stand Alone Complex?

I think it's a totally new thing with a much younger Major (even though she's a full cyborg).

Its basically before section 9 is formed, how it gets formed and how each member is recruited. I guess you could see it as a prequel to SAC.

It goes into a little detail about the world war, how Japan lost and how few full cyberized people there are.

I liked its ideas. The problem is you HAVE to watch the movies. The TV series butchered the OVAs (lots of stuff is cut, shit is out of order. It's just bad) which is why Arise gets such a bad rap.

Another reason is the look of the Major as well, She looks a lot younger as well as different and people didn't like that.

I mean you say its a prequel so the character should look younger and a bit different

I was legit shocked that Wolf's Rain was only a Winter 2003 anime because it looked like Baccano!, but Bones in general has always been a high-quality studio.

Actually I looked it up, never mind, its its own thing. Well, the Major is a full cyborg so she can be eternally young. She can never age if she wanted. I mean that's how she survives in the movie.

I just started watching the Netflix Ultraman and honestly I like how dumb and cheesy it is in that very 90s Power Rangers eske way. It's like someone tried to take that writing style and mix it with modern writing sensibilities. It's a mess but a fun mess so far.

Yes, Bones was one of the best studios in the 2000s (what are they up to now? I actually can't think of anything since Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood, do they do MHA?)

JC Staff also put out some good looking shows, including R.O.D The TV and though it was technically a different studio, the Read or Die OVA still looks good too.

There's also Ufotable and the Garden of Sinners movies, which date back to 2007 and basically could have come out yesterday, Ufotable also made an underrated, charming little comedy TV series called Dokkoida that also looked pretty great.

So basically the 2000s wasn't really that different, there were good looking shows and bad looking shows same as anytime, but there is of course a wonderful texture to cel based shows and there's the technical issue of digital shows not being able to be digitally remastered the same way a film print can be.

Being remastered into HD has also really redeemed a lot of 80s and 90s anime, they look far better than they did originally, a good example of that is the original Vampire Hunter D, which I assume probably looked kinda ehhhh on VHS and DVD but looks gorgeous in HD.

So it's not a prequel to Stand Alone Complex but a different continuity that just happens to take place earlier? That's not confusing at all.

Yup, its a prequel in its own continuity but follows similar story beats. They do this constantly with GoitS. You have to take Arise in a vaccum. It also puts people off, because while the Major looks different, EVERYBODY else looks the same. When you're watching, if you've watched a ton of GoitS, there's going to be major cognitive dissonance happening. So when she's being cold and distrusting to the chief of Section 9 you're like 'Why is she...oh they just met.'

'Why is Bato shooting at...oh, they're not on the same team yet.'

So you have to basically completely disconnect yourself from everything you've seen and take it in as something wholly new. Which is pretty difficult. That combined with the awful TV edit is why some people really just don't like it. I enjoyed it, but they're never going to continue it.
